So...Queens of the Stone Age. Let's see...waited in line for about 40 minutes due to the obvious ineptness of the staff at the Empire. You don't wait in line that long to get into the Fillmore or the Warfield or the Great American, and they're all much bigger. I had plenty of time to check out the peeps in line. A somewhat varied crowd, but a lot of metal dudes. At first I thought that maybe there were so many giant guys becaue Josh Homme is so tall and that seemed weird, because I don't seek out bands with tall ladies in them, but then I figured that big dudes are attracted to metal music the same way that smaller dudes are attracted to indie rock. I know, I'm a genius. I saw more than one guy that had a sunglass tan on his face, usually in the shape of Oakley Blades. I saw one indie rock/hipster looking cute young girl that was wearing a dress that was basically open to the waist and that revealed every square inch of her breasts but somehow no nipple slip. If you were at that show I'm sure you saw that. I tried so hard not to look but I couldn't help myself. Grace did too! I'm not just a perv.
Missed at least half of the Eagles of Death Metal just because of the long wait, but they were really mediocre so I didn't care. The lead singer had a look that was so macho that it crossed over into Freddy Mercury territory (reflective aviator glasses, handlebar mustache, super tight clothes), and he seemed a bit sexually ambiguous in a way that probably made some of the bros in the crowd uncomfortable, which I thought was great. I started thinking that maybe he's gay and that that's rad that the Queens of the Stone Age crowd is a bit more open-minded than your typical metalheads and that maybe Josh Homme is a cool guy.
Waited a while in between bands, I must confess I was having the same sharp stomach pains that seem to be plaguing me for the past week (I bet I have some repulsive parasite, that would happen to me) and I had to sit down. I only include that because it contributed to my later actions. QOTSA came out to the strains of "Who's afraid of the big bad wolf" and they played some song that's from the new album that I haven't heard. They were really swaggery and pose'y and they had this weird keyboardist chick who was trying to look tough by smoking a lot without using her hands but she really just looked tore to the bone. Anyway, blah blah, they play another song, Homme says "We're Queens of the fucking Stone Age" in a way that seemed dumb and not tough to me. They were definitely trying too hard. People that are really tough don't have to make such a big deal of it. Anyway after maybe the third song he says some bullshit about "Who wants to get laid tonight?" people cheer and then he says, to paraphrase, "well, if you want to get laid then quit slamming into each other up front like a bunch of homos". Everyone cheers, I see red, exit heckasac stage left. Sure, the stomach pains were about 20% of the reason I wrote it off so quick, but I won't have anything to do with music that's made by an asshole like that. Unless someone lets me know that he gave a long speech after I left on the evils of homophobia, or presented an oversize novelty check to fight AIDS, then I won't listen to that band or give them one cent of my money ever again. That's part of why I don't listen to any rock (except glam rock). I don't relate to that mentality. Worst 26 dollars I ever spent.

Later on he mentioned how it was an "offical homosexual night event" just incase anyone mistook the meaning behind his previous comment.
"I don't relate to that mentality."

But the sexist/homophobic mentality of hip hop you do? Thats not meant as a tottal jab. I am just curious how you relate to the machoness of hip hop but not hardrock/punk/metal.
I really enjoyed the show. I didn't know he said that other thing about it being a gay night. Bummer. It;s like when I find out all the girls I have crushes on don't like Black Flag. I just saw the comment as trying to get the big guys from smacking into the little guys (me) and ladies in the front. It worked for a while.
Well, as George Orwell said, Good people don't necessarily make good art and good art isn't made by necessarily good people.
I also respect anyones choice to not support something based on there beliefs. I only comment to give alittle balanece and express my feelings on the matter.

ps. The Eagles of Death Metal where actually awesome. Thats the second time I have seen them. That last song was hot! But they where better with out a bass player...
pps That drummer was also great. Actually I am a real smuch and it invloves her. I was standing line and saw some women leave the tour bus and I thought to myself "There goes another groupie. What a weird reality to sleep with guys just because they are in bands..blah blah" or something like that. Then when I get into the show and see her on stage SHREDING ON THE DRUMMS! I truely realized I am an smuck. Women? play music? Whatever...
Charles, your attempts to use reason on me are pointless. It's the way I say it is, and that's all. That comment hurt my feelings (Josh Homme's comment). Regardless of some homophobic content in the hip hop I listen to (which I can't think of right now, but I'm sure it's there), I've never been to a hip-hop show where anyone got called homo, or I would probably walk out. Please don't drag me into the bad artist/good art thing. I make exceptions, certainly, but I was just reacting viscerally to hearing someone openly say something so stupid in the year 2005. I am not mad about your comment, though, just to clarify in case it sounds like I am.
Dude, I was tottally taken down a peg or two as well for fully realizing he's a bro. Well, actually standing in line made realize, despite how much of a bad ass I think of myself as, I am still pretty wimpy. And thus I am at show with bros. I guess I am just concerned becuase I don't want anyone to think I am a bad person for liking the show and still liking the band.
Charles
ps I also am not angry. I know you are very moral person and live your life as close to those morals as possible.
As a best friend/ roomate of B's for years I can tell you she suffers from a complete lack of moral scruples. "Secular Humanists" such as her can never have true morals nor truly understand how harmless homophobic comments truly are. Homme was simply speaking in a language that those "blame America 1st, international Banking types" don't "get".If "they" don't like the offensive comments maybe "they" should just stick to the dirty clubs which reek of reason and comradery!
ps: What ever happened to rock bands putting on a show. those d.bags in the audience seemed satisfied with what the QotSA offered but posing like Elvis isn't enuff! Plus Homme looked to much like Craig Kilborn which, when juxtapposed with the Gothic keyboard player/"sexy"dancer, was quite disconcerting.
He's a redhead with a mullet, so it's kinda funny when he tries to look so cool.
Did you guys catch that shit Charles wrote about me? That is an unpaid endorsement, I swear.
Paul is singing a different tune than last night. He was tottally into it then!
There stage presence was ok. I liked the Homme just dressed in sweats pretty much. The gothic chick was funny.
Charles
Charlie, reflection is a fine thing and it can change ones opinion, they played well , they shredded at times, but I need more to feel satisfied by a rock band. They didn't "shine".
so all the metal kids i've grown up around or with or whatever have never been at all macho...it's mostly dominated by males, but i have honestly never met a man or kid who is into metal (i'm not talking about qotsa, because they're not a metal band) that will look down on women and homo's (although i do hate women, but this isn't about me)...(OH BUT I'M NOT GAY EITHER!)...it seems to me you don't know anyone who is really into that genre.....i don't know...it's a very genuine type of music....the imagery of it i don't belive to be very macho either...death and violence are not macho or manly things right? i don't belive punk (although i kind of hate punk music and i can't relate to many of the people i know who are into it) i don't think thats a macho form of music...i mean it seems that alot of it has nice ideas behind it...you know progressive or whatever...shit i don't really care about i guess, but most people do...so what do i know...i'm just livin a life you know?...as for hip hop...i love hip hop too and it maybe because it fit so perfectly with my childhood and was sort of the soundtrack for everything happening when i was a kid (metal mostly and some hip hop were)...alot of of the objectification stuff is mainly in the mainstream form of i guess both these musics...right?...i do enjoy hearing all the terrible things people, rappers have to say about women and homosexuals...alot of the time they word these things so clever and i just looooooovvvveeeee hearing people bad mouth others in a very clever and almost celebratory (check word for legitimacy)way....i don't see anything wrong with people having opinions like the ones they have..although we may see them as ignorant and offensive it's just the same as any other persons songs...in the end it's all a matter of opinion or whatever.....it really doesn't matter....music arguments are always the most pointless and maybe even the ones that disgust me the most...it's like arguing politics..it is just a terrible thing because you always make someone out who maybe a great person, but the only thing is that they have a different way of thinking..so in the end they may feel bad about how they feel....uugghhh as dumb as it sounds...you know?....politics and music both are arguments for assholes.
so..matter of opinion....hmm?...
in my case it's a matter of intelligence.....
so i guess i win.
Hey Beckler,
Just checked out your site for the first time. Went through some archives. Interesting stuff, but curious...what do you have against Kurt Spataro?
If you know anything at all about Josh you would know that 90% of what he say's on stage is a joke intended to piss off humourless people such as yourself.

This is the truth. It's a shame you take these things so seriously, Beckler.
fag
You obviously need some help understanding the world of music. Queens of the Stone Age has always been a very tounge-in-Cheek band, who love to overplay things and use offensive remarks like it's nothing. Got a problem with that? Good, because you need to have it offend you if you can't handle some entertainment.
You have no idea how wrong you are. dead wrong.
'That's part of why I don't listen to any rock (except glam rock). I don't relate to that mentality.'
That quote made my day, thanks.
So you have a problem with a guy using he term "homos" yet no problem with the blatant sexism apparent in hip hop music and videos? Not to mention your comment about Homme being a redhead with a mullet which is not cool? I'm sure the gay community would love an advocate as obviously free of bigotry as you are speaking out on their behalf.
You are one paradoxical person for sure. Mr Homme would be laughing his ass off if he read that tripe.
Hope your soap box breaks beneath you and the emergency room doctor removing the splinters from your ass is a 6'5" redhead with a bad haircut.
ATTENTION BLOGGER
your post is over a year old but it was just posted on the QOTSA message board. You are wrong. The band and josh are not homophobic in the least. Josh often comapres people fight dancing and slamming into one another to gay people. It always appeared to me to be attempting to make them feel awkward or ashamed, by challenging those people's own homophobia and ideas on sexuality.
"If you wanna slam into each other, go to a gay bar" He often tells slam 'dancers' to go to a gay bar.
QOTSA is a band who can be quoted to say it took it's name in part to discourage homophobic rednecks from coming to the shows and creating a redneck boys club vibe for the band.
QUEENS of the fucking stone age. Think about.
Oh and sorry to burst your moustache clad fantasy bubble, but Jesse Hughes, lead singer of the Eagles of Death Metal was very much put on this earth to dance with the ladies.
Dear idiot,
You are a retard. Why don't you go to shows and listen to bands to listen to music instead of pass uneducated judgements on people and things you don't know or understand. Please kill yourself.

yo0u say this, yet you were offended by what Homme said? Get a life you idiot, learn to take a joke!
FUCK YOU FAGGOT!
Hello: Have you seen how the Eagles of Death Metal dress? Josh is in there.
YEAH, HE'S HOMOPHOBIC.
Beckler, you're a F*ckin retard.
lmao @ Josh Homme is homophobic. BTW, The look of Eagles of Death Metal is shtick. If you'd ever heard of QOTSA before the show you might have been aware that Josh Homme has said numerous times that the name QOTSA is a jab at all the homophobic fans of his old band, Kyuss. Maybe sarcasm doesn't exsist where you live... that being said, I also find EODM kind of average. Honestly.
Maybe your stomach hurts from all the man sauce you've been eating.
I think the only HOMO maybe HomoPhobic is the douche who wrote this blog... go play in traffic.
don't get staire, huh?
they're called 'queens of the stone age' to purposely limit their audience as most homophobes would instantly think - judging by the name of the band - that they are a bunch of queers.
you are a moron
Glam rock is the only exception in rock'n'roll where drag queens walk freely, and hate free. Take it from a real queen with experience...
WTF man.....why is it that you cant say anything in this day and age without recourse....what ever happend to Freedom of Speech!!!! so what he made a stupid comment...give him a break....what are we suopposed to do crucify everyone that says anything politically incorrect...I have a gay sister...am not homophobic in any way..grow up and stop being such a whiny baby.QOTSA ROCK!!!

couldnt of said it better myself
ps. QOTSA DO ROCK!!! ERA VULGARIS COMING REAL SOON :)
Sometimes you have to take what Josh says with a grain of salt. He's quite sarcastic, and while that's no excuse for any sort of immoral behavior, I do think his intentions with that comment were good. He also purposely chose the name "QUEENS" of the stoneage as to appear less macho and stupid. He also fired his bass player because he found out he was abusing his wife. So he does stand for good things...
Realize that to contain a specific type of person, you have to speak their language. I would assume that all of the people in the front who were slamming and bashing out of control were guys. Young, impressionable, macho kids. They were probably including people who were not interested in being slammed. To stop it, the singer spoke directly to them. I think it was pretty clever if you realize why it was done. The other bit - "Queens of the Fucking stonage"? That is more humor lost on people who have to be told that a joke is coming. Yes. I'm sure of both of these points.
What a bunch of whiny bullshit. Anyone who is offended by slang terms or stereotypes are whiney bitches. I was at a concert by another band with a gay friend of mine when the singer said something like that and he thought it was funny.
this is not the first time Josh has done this, he's a sexist pig, and two faced. He said the whole reason they named the band "Queens" of the stone age was to shed away homophobes, he's the biggest one I've ever worked with. I've never once seen them play a gay or lesbian bar, have you? it all comes down to "practice what you preach."
He never called anyone a homo, or even said it was a bad thing. "Like a bunch of homos" He just used the mentality that all the idiots crushing everyone has. Putting them into a position in which they would feel embarrassed. If anything I would say that he really used the whole homophobic thing to his advantage, like he does with most things. For instance in other concerts if someone is causing bother in the crowd, he'll pick them out from the crowd and make a total example of what they are. Okay he may refer to names such as "Cock Smoker" but does that really in anyway suggest that someone is gay? Not at all.
I'm not trying to argue with you or say you are wrong, of course we all have our own opinion. I just think that when people say he's against being gay and is foul mouthed etc. He is just really passionate about giving people a good show. And he has the stage presence to make things happen. I could swear a gay couple have made out at one of his shows. I think if he were to single them out like he does to the assholes in the crowd causing trouble then it would hit international news to show what an asshole he was then. But that hasn't happened and i doubt it ever would.
Dear Douchebag,
You are a douche
Please go douche yourself. Then you should get off your highhorse, douche youself again, then make love to your hand some more.
Congratulations.
You are a fucking retarded piece of shit. You know nothing about music, you don't even deserve an opinion. J Ho is one of the most talented artists in the world. What do you do? your probably just a fat ugly bitch who can't get any. go fuck yourself and have a fucking shit day
sorry to hear that you're not a fan of one of the best and most diverse bands out there. But really, you just underminded your whole argument with that stupid comment (although if i'm honest most of this blog was one big shitfest)unless he 'presented an oversize novelty check to fight AIDS' you wouldn't listen to his music blah blah blah. you do get that's massivly insulting that to think the only way he could make up to the gay community was to give a check to help fight AIDS. Yeah, definatly-all gays totally have AIDS, 'cause it's not a bigger problem amongst the straight community. good to hear your self rightous bullshit is so flawless.
Peace out x
