no nobunny

Now Nobunny is not listed on any shows, but I guess he's playing the Funcastle? Pizzas and Enlows at Luigis.

The Vice Mag article on Doug Biggert is online now, and as smiller pointed out to me, despite the clear sexual undertones of a lot of the hitchhiker pictures, due to the insane amount of female nudity in the Vice photo issue-Biggert's photos are just about the most innocent thing in there.

OK, now a question for all you world travelers out there reading. Gballs and I are going to fly into Mexico City in early November. I think our trip is going to be about 10 days. I think we're also going to go to Guanajuato. If that was your trip, how long would you stay in Mexico City? Where in Mexico City would you stay? What would you do there? What would you not do?

I keep not saying it, but since everywhere I look is Biggert let me just say,his quote from the SN&R “I like skinny people. I have a phobia about fat people,” has really been thought provoking for me. And made me sort of uncomfortable. Its not like I was wondering why Biggert took pictures of skinny young men instead of me, I have been pretty familiar with the reasons for that for a long time.
I am just curious if he said he was phobic of black people or gay people would it have gotten more of a mention amongst the people we know. I am not lessinging his work as an artist, but honestly I would not be into going to a show where I knew the artist was actually scared of my body. I am not even trying to stir up shit, I just wanted to say it if anyone else was feeling uncomfortable with this. Plus the world loves a jackass with an opinion on the internet right?

If you're black or gay or white, that's what you are and there's no reason why you should feel ashamed.

If you're overweight and feel ashamed, as it sounds like you are saying, you can lose weight.

It's hard work, more mental than physical, to eat less and exercise more. Many people don't have it in them to lose weight. This sounds like a personal attack, but it's not.

Thanks.
What was your name again?
Maybe your address? We could workout and you can give me more diet hints while you completely miss my point.
And while I hate to lower myself to comment on your opinion, I really am not ashamed, nor do I have any reason to be. But I guess if you knew me you would understand that.

I think the second comment isn't a comment on what Natalie said, it's just you feeling superior and lecturing.

Doug is a true eccentric, and a self-taught artist, and I appreciate him as such. That was a lame comment he made.

I wasn't saying you need to lose weight. I think you understood my point.

If you're black or gay or white or tall or short, that's that. There's nothing you can do about it. Overweight people can do something about it.

Comparing black or gay to being fat is comparing apples to oranges.

Sorry, I meant you also misunderstood my point.

That quote sucked- in large part because it was taken out of context.

If you know Doug you know that he was talking about sexual attraction. his 'i like skinny people' was spoken in the same context as someone might say 'i like blondes' or 'i like dudes with mustaches.' Or, conversely 'I have a phobia about dudes with beards.'

certainly Doug could have phrased it better, but to put the quote out there without the connotation of attraction and desire gave an inaccurate impression of what he was actually talking about.

but, in short, yes, that quote sucked and if I didn't know what Biggert meant by it I'd have thought he was a real turd.

and, anonymous- you're a bonehead.

MANY people are just genetically big. Sure, there are a lot of people who eat too much and get no exercise, but there are other folks who are just born big and stay big.

Your argument about being overweight is not that far from that of the folks who say people 'choose' to be gay.

well, in rl's defense about the article, i kinda think anything you say with a tape recorder in your face is fair game for writing an article. it was a juicy quote as far as making it an interesting article

Anonymous said...

That makes more sense.
I knew that about Biggert, I was just sort of shocked to see that it extended to the general population.

and sorry everyone to bring a dose of anonymous to the day.

Regardless if it's as easy as "If you're fat and don't like it, lose weight" (it's not), I don't really think a person should have to lose weight to feel repsected as a person. I'm not saying us big folks have had a struggle near the scale of black folks or gays, but I feel like that line of thinking comes from the same place as "don't ask don't tell" and "if you don't like the way white folks treat you don't try and go to their schools." Just to cover my bases, let me reitterate that I don't think fat people have had it anywhere as near as bad as people of color or homosexuals.

Um, does anybody know if that article made the print edition? It looks like it did?

You misunderstand my point.

If you are gay, you are gay. If you are fat, you can lose weight. Yes, it's hard. My point is not about how hard it is to lose weight.

Comparing "black or gay" to "fat" is wrong. I didn't say fat people should change. I simply said it is possible. "Fat" is not the same as "black or gay".

I'm fat. My husband is fat. One of my brothers is gay. Fat is not black. Fat is not gay.

I think we're both missing points. Your point: It is possible to lose weight. It is impossible for someone to change their race or sexual identity. Both good points!

My point: Just because something is possible doesn't mean it should have to be done to make a person feel accepted.

I'm just wading into this because I enjoy arguing. I know people on this thread don't that much.

The question as to whether being fat is an achieved status or an ascribed status seems to me irrelevant. Should B. feel ashamed about being honest about his true feelings? Many (most?) people are phobic at some level towards blacks and gays, but the majority of those people would deny having those feelings if asked how they felt. How can they ever analyze those feels if they can't own up to having them? I think in general it is best to be upfront and honest about your true feeling even if that causes you to accidentally step on people's toes now and again.

I have some decent Guanajuato suggestions, but I'll have to go back and look at some stuff to provide helpful hints later. I've got nothing on MexCity though.

I just want to clarify one thing - I didn't ask Doug about sexual desire or attraction as part of that question. I asked him, "what do you like to shoot and what don't you like to shoot?" And he gave me that answer as you see it.

The only part I left out was the part about how the sight of flabby arms on women freaks him out.
That was my question, that was his answer and nothing was taken out of context to change its meaning.

Certainly, if you wish, you can read into it and make your own assumptions about sexual desire or the like but just be aware that they're just that - your assumptions.

That said, I agree with some of the above comments - Doug is an interesting and eccentric artist; you can like him and like his work without liking everything he does or says.

thanks Rachel for clairifying.
I am sticking with my original post.

And you are right I can enjoy his art with out agreeing with him, but I assure you me in a tank top at his opening might freak him the fuck out.

I opened myself up to the cristicisms I got. It was interesting to see everyones points, I just grew immediatly exhausted.

good or bad.
At least its only art right?

Natalie sez, "I just grew immediatly exhausted." Ha! I usually thrive off of argument and debate, but I hear you about this particular argument. I really couldn't get my heart into it. Though I tried!

If anyone is still reading this tread, heckasac is definitely the most lively sacramento-based thread that I know of, but what other sacto threads might I be missing? And let's skip undietcos, because that message board is a sewer.

How can we contract the swine flu when we will be dead from the drug wars in a matter of hours? Delicious delicious hours. So worth it.

I propose a $5 bet...
Who is most likely to get swine flu? Becks and Gbomb on their trip to Mexico, or me on my trip to NZ? As I told my mom, it's not the trip there that I'm worried about, it's catching it on the plane ride home.

Jeff M,
I just finally figured out that you are Jeff McCrory from the SN&R. I was going to e-mail you to tell you how much I loved your story about giving up the internet for a month. I almost didn't read it because I thought it looked boring, but I'm really glad I did. It's one of the best things I've read in SN&R. The last two paragraphs were things of beauty.

Thanks, H. Conway Esq.

The only thing I regret from that article is admitting that I had a sexual thing for Mrs. C from happy days when I was a kid, because my mom emailed me and was like, "Mrs. C? Really?" Back to therapy I go.
