I like country-ish rock and it would be interesting to see a show at Mother India, but I am loathe to give any support to a band named "Ghetto Moments". That is the worst name for a band, hands down, ever in the history of rock. And I do remember that there was a local band called Operation Milksnatch when I make that statement. That article where they explained that everyone has "ghetto moments" such as when they noticed a crack in their minivan window made me nauseous. Anyway, good luck to the Cassidy's and maybe I will see them soon. That reminds me, I heard someone say "I vomited in my mouth a little" again last night and I must reiterate that I wish this phrase would go away.

That's really sad about Gary Webb taking his own life. It seems like his career was on a downward spiral ever since he wrote about the CIA/contra/crack connection. I don't really know a lot about that story, but my impression was that most of his allegations were not discredited but that the San Jose Mercury News found a way to railroad him out of the job. Maybe I should do some research about this. I should buy that book about it that Alexander Cockburn wrote. I saw Cockburn speak at Time Tested quite a few years ago and I remember being impressed when he talked about it, but of course I can't remember the content of his talk (thanks, long-term memory).

Heather clued me into that Bee article about the resoration of the Globe Mill in Alkali Flats. This could be a good thing. That's a very picturesque building and I would hate to see it torn down. I wonder if that factory around S and 11th or so (I can't remember the exact cross streets, thanks spatial memory) is next. You know, the one with the water tanks or whatever that look like muppet eyes on the top. That would make cool apartments.

That's the CADA building. We used to climb up on the roof all the time. That would be a cool apartment building, and I hope they never tear it down. I wonder if Cada is still using it?

    P.S. Fuck Ghetto Moments!

  2. Isn't that vomit line from "Anchorman"? I've never had the pleasure of hearing it used in a social context. I can't wait.

  3. oh yeah. I do think CADA still uses it. I haven't seen Anchorman, but maybe that is where it's from. I just figured it was from some crappy stand-up comedian.

  4. I know it's from a movie but I'm not sure which. Either way, gold.

I heard the vomit comment on a rerun of Will and Grace. Ione Skye was a guest star and she said it, but maybe it wasn't the first to use it.

Yes, really bad band name. Some people are really offended by the use of the word ghetto to mean scruffy or poorly put together. Understandably.

Not to mention that the phrase has hit it's peak. (I would usually use the phrase "jumped the shark" here, if the phrase hadn't already "JTS."

I am starting a band called "That's Hot" if anyone wants to join.

Apartments in Globe Mills? You mean 'lofts' right? No self respecting yuppie is gonna pay way too much to live in an 'apartment'! But a 'loft'? No problem! I predict 'flats' making a comeback - but then again, I would.
And come on, I think we've all had our ghetto moments. Like, I had a flat tire on my bike last week. Ghetto moment! And I couldn't figure out how to turn my pilot light back on last month. Ghetto Moment! And don't even get me started on this rip in my sweater....

  8. I know, I know. I was wondering whaat makes a space a "loft" in the eyes of developers who are trying to attract the yups. Just to vent in comments since probs nobody will really see it, my co-worker just hit the nail on the head when she said that in the military they called stuff like the office xmas party "mandatory fun". Ours is supposed to last hours today and no one wants to go and I'm tripped out because another co-worker's friend just got a DUI downtown after three beers!! But how can I survive this without sweet booze?!? This is a total ghetto moment for me. Who's G-bomb?

I think the Globe Mills thing is going to be senior housing, which sort of eliminates the whole loft vs apartment distinction for some reason...

Senior apartments? That's not where the new money is!! What can we call them to make them attractive to affluent seniors? I propose "Luxury Coffins". Or maybe "The Hometown Buffet Arms". I'm also trying to come up with a 'senior moments' pun but I got nothing. I guess I'm having a ghetto mo....no, really, I got nothing.

  12. How about "Matlock Manor"? Just kidding, I love old people, no really! OK, I don't really know any except Soriano, but he's cool.

  13. seniors can have ghetto moments, too. like when they can't get to the optometrist so they tape their lenses back into the frames with scotch tape. and like when they have no feeling left parts of their face due to a stroke so walk around with food dripping off their lips and smeared on their cheeks or something. and those cars they drive? straight out of the ghetto. i should know. the last car i owned was a low-riding chrysler new yorker that i bought from my grandma's friend. in fact, if they develop that building into senior condos, or whatever you want to call them, i bet all sorts of hijinks will ensue. speaking as someone who lives next to a convalescent hospital. . .i can definitely say that old people and ghetto moments are like peas in a pod.
