Has anyone else noticed NPR's all-polio-vaccine-all-the-time coverage this last week? Did you know that it's the 50 year anniversary of the fucking polio vaccine? No? You didn't? Well let me tell you about it for about 3 hours a day for five days then. This matches their all-pope-all-the-time coverage from the last two weeks. Imagine if the Pope had ever had polio, that would be a story worthy of at least a month of in-depth reporting.
I know! It's almost like Fox News kidnapped the program director and hijacked the newsroom.
ReplyDeleteI didn't notice all the polio coverage. But I DO know there is an actual working iron lung by the front door of the Sacramento Medical Museum, a place I highly recommend a visit to in your spare time. You can plug in the iron lung and everything, it's one of the few things that actually worked well. The curator is this awesome bearded puttering doc with vast pools of knowledge about all the quackeries perpetrated by "MDs" in sactown's many incarnations. Also be sure to check out the leech lunchbox and the early OB equipment. It will scare you silly.

Will someone tell me where the Medical Museum is? Its one of the things Ive wanted to do in Sac for a long time, yet never seemed to figure out where it is and then, possibly, forgot about it? Anyway - where?

It's on Elvas, and it says "Sacramento Medical Museum" on the side of the building. It's around 50-55th streets. The sign used to say only Sierra Medical Association, but they added the museum part of the sign years later. It's right inside the association HQ. If the curator is not there, you have to go into the HQ to have them unlock the door. But there's a lot of stuff to poke around and look at in the entry way. White building, south side of Elvas. Enjoy!
