Yeah, but the Stones can rip off anyone they want & still sound exactly like the Stones. That's one of the many reasons they rule!

You tried to say 'part' but you had to say 'party'. Because it's the Stones!!

Also, Becky, I know you're not doing shit at work. So maybe you could, like, post something.

  6. Not true. I'm working! And tripping cuz I'm asking about taking the time off for our trip today. We can bid on our tickets by tomorrow, probably!

Plus, all I did was camp this weekend. Does anyone really want to hear about my camping trip? Although it did involve group nudity...

They always have been my favorite band. I never planned on being a 34 year old who's favorite band is the Rolling Stones. I even love the whole 'skinny disco quarterback' era. Embarassing? yes. Beast of Burden with Bette Middler? A terrifying spectacle! Tatoo You? YES, I love that falsetto bullshit. But even I will not listen to Dirty Work or anything after that. They are dead to me now. I wish they had retired so I wouldn't be so humiliated by their increasingly silly and awful songs.

Ok, so the age old question:

Are you Stones, Beatles or Kinks?

    You've got my answer.

The Kinks are like The Who. Both are great, influential, unique bands. I love them both. But neither of them have the insane run of flawless albums/songs that the Beatles & Stones have. I could never say for sure between the two which I like better. But I will say that the Beatles' genius has floored me more often than the Stones'. The Stones brilliance lies more in their swagger & their interpretation. How they make everything you've already heard suddenly sound 10 times cooler when they do it. The Beatles invented their own music. And I'm being prejudiced here but I also think it's harder to write a good pop song than a good rock song - though in all fairness, the pop sensibility that the Stones injected in to blues & rock can't be ignored. Basically, love them or hate them, you could compile a long list of every Beatles song and a vast majority of people (OK, over 25!) could probably sing at least a part of 90% of the list. I don't think there's another band that could claim that. And there's also the Beatles/kid factor. I asked Sitsa (Tatiana's kid) what music she liked the other day & she just yelled "BEATLES!" immediately.

Here's what Gram had to say about The Eagles, " The Eagles' music is bubblegum. It's got too much sugar in it. Life is tougher than they make it out to be." So true.

When Gram died, The Eagles wrote him a song, "My Man".

    Here are the lyrics...
"Tell me the truth, how do you feel?
Like you're rollin' so fast that you're spinnin' your wheels?
Don't feel too bad, you're not all along
We're all tryin' to get along
With ev'rybody else try'n' to go their way
You're bound to get tripped, and what can you say?
Just go along 'til they turn out the lights
There's nothin' we can do to fight it
No man's got it made till he's far beyond the pain
And we who must remain go on living just the same
I once knew a man, very talented guy
He's sing for the people and people would cry
They knew that his song came from deep down inside
You could hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes
And so he traveled along, touch your heart, then be gone
Like a flower, he bloomed till that old hickory wind
    Called him home
    My man's got it made
He's gone far beyond the pain
And we who must remain go on living just the same
We who must remain go on laughing just the same."

hmmm, should've said, "We who must remain go on RIPPING YOU OFF just the same. (But I shouldn't talk, I rip off Gram daily.)

Oh, and Beatle's all the way.

Beatles, Stones or Kinks? You bastards -- there may be no answer to that one.

As far as Gram and the Eagles, remember when the Big Lebowski says, "I hate the Eagles"? Is it a coincidence that Jimmie Dale Gilmore from the Flatlanders is in that film as well? The soundtrack is made up entirely of huge inovators who are past their prime-like Captain Beefheart and Bob Dylan, the exception is the Kenny Rogers song and it occurs during a dream sequence. That movie is all about the Eagles. ALL ABOUT THE EAGLES. I love the Eagles.

I'm too tired to make sense.

BEATLES! only because as a child, I used to draw ghosts and haunted houses while listening to Eleanor Rigby. Mark was there too. Madeline, are you reading this?

I'm with you Beckler. We're not talking about what band is the best or most prolific. I equate the Kinks with a Sacto state of mind.

  16. like brew, i totally associate the kinks with a sacto state of mind. i can put on 'jukebox music' and think about all the great dance parties that just make my month. i think the stones are kinda transcendent. i listen to 'torn and frayed' when i get home drunk and i'm totally relating to the whole idea that a dark bar and a dirty guitar solo can make everything okay. that said, the beatles will always remind me of road trips with my family when i was a kid so no matter which band (kinks or stones) i'm more into at the moment, the beatles are kind of in this untouchable category by themselves. also, their songs are easier to do at karaoke so that gives them a MAJOR advantage.

    Allen (Heckamax)
I read it. Are you suggesting that drawing ghosts and haunted houses, while listening to Eleanor Rigby, was not a normal childhood activity?

Yeah that was fucked up of the eagles, after Gram went and invented country music, they just took it to the bank. The best of the eagles sold more than thriller for a reason and i like them better than beatles, stones or kinks. well, ok now I'm just getting ridiculous but anyone who doesn't like them can kiss my anonymous ass. though i will say no beatles or kinks songs could make me cry like the eagles can, and the only stones song that could do it would be that last song on sticky fingers.
