herzog interview

I will spare you more rapsodizing about Werner Herzog because it would probably just make you sick, but there is a greatgreat interview with him on Ebert's website right now. There are so many fantastical stories in it that can't possibly be true. Like how he walked from Germany to Paris to save his favorite film critic's life. Or how a camerman became hypnotized by Tim Roth's performance in Invincible. Or this one, about beer steins in Bavaria:

Actually in Bavaria there's a law that there must be two grooves on either side of a stein so that it breaks easier when you hit, because it can fracture your skull.

Ebert also has posted his essay on Fitzcarraldo.

  1. Is it spelled rhapsodizing? I think it is. Man, you guys are stingy with the comments today.

I will agree that it is impossible that anyone was hypnotized by Tim Roth's performance in Invincible.

  3. Rhapsodizing it is...as in the movie "Rustler's Rhapsody"

That's cool that they talk about the crabs, that is a crazy part, in a an otherwise not so good movie.

The forest scene with the deafness is beautiful too.

That interview's great; Herzog's a brilliant loon and I wouldn't have it any other way. And it all made me want to see "Stroszek" again. And "Fitzcarraldo," of course. First time I saw the latter, and the first time I fell in love with Claudia Cardinale in big dark room, was when at the too-young age I saw in 1982 or 1983 at the long-departed Showcase Cinema on L Street:

Don't worry about the lack of a photo; the place was far from rhapsodically beautiful to look at. But that was the only flaw; I have great memories of all the movies (and John Waters' famed "no smoking allowed in the theatre" tag) I saw for the first time there before Landmark pulled the plug and let it get razed. Grrr...

I'm scared to sign it. By doing so, wouldn't I reveal my identity and actually show some zealous resolve and courage?

  9. The movie has been getting a lot of press...it was even referenced on "Pardon the Interruption" (a sports pundit show on ESPN) yesterday.
