alicia's friends blog about being a cabbie in NY is really good. It includes the helpful tidbit that car service drivers are often drunk.

  1. When I was first a cabbie (at 21 years of age), I was somewhat square when it came to drinking (“but aren’t you still a square?” you ask..ha ha.). During my first week on the job I had to pick up some old dude from the Vagabond Inn on Fulton. One thing I learned as a cab driver is that when old dudes call up a cab to pick them up from a bar (or more likely, the bar calls you to pick up the old drunk dude who’s had enough), they usually want you to come in and have a drink with them before they leave. So anyway, I go to pick the guy up, he invites me to sit down with him and orders me a whiskey soda (made “flame club” style). For the rest of my shift I was freaked out that someone was going to know I was drunk and report me or something. I was just a kid!

Anyhow, the moral of the story is:

Who can pass up a free drink? Definitely no cab driver I can think of.
