ny times food article, sometimes it's soooo hard to think of a heading!!

Oh my God, I am going to visit one of these restaurants when I am in NY. For those of you who don't want to log in (but you should, I can't do it justice) it is about the enticing food of Bukharian-speaking Jews. Most of the restaurants are in Rego Park, Queens. They also give props to a restaurant that the writer says is the best Afghan restaurant in NY, Bahar in Elmhurst.

The food of Central Asia! How exciting! You guys should go for sure.

The bakery here in Tujunga which I thought was Armenian is actually Iranian. I saw the strangest thing there yesterday. It looked like a medium sized salami, but it was actually lots of walnuts on a string that had been repeatedly dipped into "grape juice", like you were making a candle or something. I'm going to get one and see what it tastes like. Sounds like ancient candy to me.

That sort of sounds like an Armenian dish that DP's dad loves. Are the walnuts shelled? Or are they green?

I suspect that the walnuts are green, because it looks lumpy, like whole walnuts.

I am also confused as to what this bakery does. It's like Armenian, Iranian and various other middle eastern cultures all at once.

    Ancient Candy!!!

  9. I love those Chickpea cookies they make flavored with pistachio. Easy to choke on though, esp. when I am snarfing about three at a time... ;)
I have never seen the walnut thing....

the Q-boro! is there anything it can't do? a friend of mine is a photographer for NY newspapers, and he refuses to work anywhere but queens, because he says it's much more diverse and interesting than the rest of the city. he even moved to maspeth by choice!

once again, heckasac provides the deep hookup. i am going to check out those restaurants ASAP. did you guys look at the little photo essay with commentary? so cool. i am reading the kite runner right now, which somehow makes this sound even better. great book.

and i second whoever said to get the bugmenot plugin for firefox. it rules! no more newspaper logins!

smiller, we're going to check out dave holland quintet at birdland tonight for my bday.

going to eat at egg right now. thanks again heckasac!

Seeing as your one of my very tightest bros, I should probably know your birthday! Oh well, I bet you don't know mine either. That's just how we roll, bra. I don't know if you remember but last year, even though you didn't know it was my bday, you randomly sent me a package that got there on my birthday. That was pretty damn smooth. Oh yeah, happy birthday!

Ancient Candy was strange. It was shelled and maybe slightly fire roasted? black walnuts strung on a piece of dental floss? This was dipped in grape must, about a million times, to make the outside coating. It looked disturbingly like a large waxen weenie. The outside part was kind of like fruit leather, or rubber. It tasted pretty good. Not sweetened at all. It would make wonderful backpacking food, maybe not the best regular food. Willy pointed out that it would be great if you had to eat something in order to survive. Not the best recommendation, but accurate. It seems like an ancient food; requires no refridgeration, is impermeable to the elements, contains a lot of calories. Unless you will be switching to a semi-nomadic lifestyle, you might want to pass on the walnut/rubber thing.

Fruit leather! that sounds like ancient fruit rool up to me!

Slop-dawg J: Although I love Brooklyn, I'm starting to agree with your friend about Queens, my initial foray, into Jackson Heights, blew my mind! We had brunch at Jackson Diner, walked around, got some chai and paan, and sat on some steps and people-watched forever. It was super fun, and made me want to check out Queens way more often.

    Happy Birthday dude!

DP's dad eats these whole walnuts that were once green, but turn black after being marinated for years in some kind of sugar water. They look foul, but he just grubs them down. They sound like they're in the same family as rubber walnuts.

went out there with my hot wife this afternoon and ate at Shalom on 108th ave., one of the places listed in the NYT article. great food! thanks heckasac! there's even a bus that goes straight there from my house.

also met a guy this AM at Egg who was celebrating his bday, too. he's exactly twice my age. he says the second 34 years have been better than the first, which is nice to hear. or maybe he just had a shitty childhood.
