Gentleman's club history project

I forgot that I have been meaning to do this for a while and wanted to enlist the help of my readers. Friday afternoon is probably a crappy time so I may repost this to start the week. I was interested in starting a historical project to document everyone who has lived in U st (aka the Gentlemans club) and in what order. It is now the longest running house that my friends have lived in and it has gone through many different phases and eras. Maybe smiller can start us off by naming the very first crew. I know Ella found the place. Anyone remember what it first rented for? How about now? Please include pets also where possible. I for one have never lived there although I did get an offer at one time. I was mostly deterred by the temperature extremes.

First lineup was: Ella, me, Lucian & Matt Curtis. I think. And kitty Steve came on to the scene pretty soon. Matt got kicked out, Jay moved in. Then it gets hazy. I think Ella moved out & Dave Ninja moved in, then maybe Lucian was replaced by Tristan? Or was Davey replaced by Tristan & Lucian was replaced by Patrone? The first classic lineup of me, Tristan, Jay & Patrone lasted a while (this was the first official Gentlemen's Club lineup) & then it becomes really unclear to me. Especially since there were always a few people staying there as well as actually living there. I know the next few people were Micah, Cossa, The Head, Mila, Vince.....Nitro.

I think it goes like this:
    Start: Miller, Ella, Matt, Lucian
    -Matt, +me
    -Ella, +Tristan (1 month)
    -Tristan, + Davey
    -Lucian, +Tristan
    -Davey, +Micah
    -Micah, +Patrone
    -Tristan, +Cossa
    +Vann
(Here’s where it starts to get a little fuzzy)
    -Miller and Vann, +Milla
    -Milla, + Head
    -Cossa, +Vince
    +/- Jen Martinez
    -Patrone, + Zach Olsen
    -Olsen, + Alec
    +Al
    -Alec
    - me and Head, + Danny and James
    -James, +Alec
Looking over it, it’s actually much less people then you might think have lived in a “punk” house that's been occupied for over ten years.

That's pretty amazing Jay. Though is my memory that I lived there when Cossa got the boot not right? And Tristan moving in, out & in again - that had me all confused!

  4. wow, thanks, I think I'm going to reformat it to make it easier for me to figure out. I wonder who lived there the longest. Are the only pets Steve and Nitro? And just three girls ever, right? Oh no wait, four, I forgot about Jen.

I think the only other pets were one very roly poly unholy pony & some shitty black cat that Steve chased out within 5 seconds of us bringing her home.

Miller...Maybe you did live there when Cossa got kicked out. It happened right around when you and Vann were moving. Now that I think about it Vince and Milla moved in at the same time. But now I can't remember who the Head replaced. Patrone? And Tristan just lived there because Davey had a month to go on his lease at his apt.
Becky... Jen had a cat named Rupert, and Mila had two cats we called Busey and Nolte, but I don't remember their real names.

I know the Head was there when I was but I don't know if she was just visiting & staying in your room or if she'd officially moved in. I guess she was just visiting. I think Cossa got kicked out when I was on Nar tour which was right before I moved out. Because I know it was Vann who told me about him getting kicked out so he must've been living there at the time. Where did Cossa move after U St? 26th St? Or out of town?

  9. cossa didn't live at 26th st, did he? that's my next history project. i'll save it for next week. and i can guarantee that even though i was there for a big chunk of it i will remember less of the details than some people who didn't even live there.

Way back in the day I had a key to the house and crashed there for a month, does that count as living there? I am sure no one noticed because I hardly talked back then. Oh, and Molly lived in Natalie's room for a month too. Does that count? ~JG

Did the U Street Gentlemans Club start before 26th and U?

Jerme and Kirk and some other people moved there in 94 or 95. Try doing that one, heckasac.

Okay, when I saw "U Street" at first I was thinking 321 U Street, which has a whole different set of punkhouse populations although it is now sadly vacant--saw my first Popesmashers show in the backyard there.

The history of Sacramento punkhouses, now there would be a serious history project...

Ella should know what year. It was right around 94-95. All I know is that I was on tour when she scored that house so I got out of the move. Came home & all my shit was in a new room!

  15. yeah jenny that counts for sure. and molly too. so that adds some more ladies to the roster.

It was Thanksgiving weekend 1994 that we moved there. I was cooking the turkey at the old house (18th street) while we moved stuff over to the new place. On the last load I took the burning hot turkey and brought it to U street to finish cooking it there! That was the first thing that was in the oven. I started a fire (yes, it used to be safe to burn wood in that thing) and ate turkey and mashed potatoes with various people who stopped by to see the new house.

For the record Scott, The shitty black cat belonged to the chinese people across the street. It smelled the turkey as I took it from the car into the house. I felt bad for it cause it was so bony and fed it turkey for several days, until you got home from tour. The cat was nicknamed Crabapple because it made a terrible meowing racket all the time. What I didn't know was that if you feed a cat turkey alone, you can give it terrible constipation and potentially kill it. Maybe that's why it was meowing like that. You got home from tour, and were home about 15 minutes before you kicked it out of the house. Although I felt bad for the cat, I was glad that you did it. We didn't get kitty steve til a little later.

What about the fact that the house wasn't officially for rent? The white house next door was for rent and I called about it and hit it off with the man who owned it. After a few phone calls, I was told that his house was too fancy for us, but that the house next door was available, and he gave me the landlord's telephone number in Santa Cruz. The next day the nice man who did that for me was found dead in his car, of a massive heart attack at a young age. His young widow came over in tears a few weeks later to give us a box of See's candy when we moved in. They were awfully nice people!

  20. Davey wanted me to post this here for him (I had actually forgotten about the poisoned rat that wouldn't die that MRM ended up putting out of its misery by beating it with a shovel. Besides the timeline, you could start a log of crazy U Street memories that could fill a book):

"Incase anyone is keep track of time, I lived at U
street for a year. I also had some 'pets' if you count
fish/eels and also the bathtub of fish*. There also
was the 'pet' rat that lived in the basement and was
killed by antifreeze and mike r mike. Also in the
basement was a pallet of black garbage bags filled
with crumpled up porno and 40s refilled with something
(i didnt check). also a burnt spoon or two was found
in these bags. On a trip to Gerber dump, we almost
bought Biz a goat for his birthday.
    -Dave Ninja
*the bathtub pond was started when i found an add in
the Pennysaver for a pet store out past power inn on
folsom that said "1000 goldfish for 5 bucks". I took
it out there (the place was pretty trashy, birds in
glass aquariums and stuff) and they said it was a typo
and was supposed to be 100 fish for 5 bucks. so i
bought them and threw them in the claw foot tub in the
    yard."

Just a guess, but those black garbage bags sound suspiciously like they belonged to Matt, the black sheep roomate. Remember the time when he and some dude who looked like Hall from Hall and Oates showed up bloody and tweaked out, running up the steps to the house with a cash register? Then they stayed up all night smashing it open with a sledgehammer upstairs in what is now Club Vince. Good times.

how many cars lived in the backyard there? I remember Ella's Barracuda and anton Barbeau's Fairlane that Micah bought. If ever there was a yard to farm cars in, that was it.

I stayed there for a few weeks to recover from a breakup. Does that count ot am I just being wishfull?

  24. i say it counts.

26th street wins on the car farming because nosy, narcing u st. neighbors put an end to that car farm. anyone remember mike r. mike's orange datsun? that's where it lives. at one time there were two cars and a motorcycle in that backyard. or was it two motorcycles?

If we are counting long term guests, then we have to include Rob Austin. And didn't West stay with us for a while as well? Maybe when Ella moved out?

West stayed in my room for a while when I was on Bananas tour. I always remember that when Davey & I walked in the door back from that tour, 90% of the house lightbulbs were burnt out & Tristan was sitting in almost total darkness on the couch.

  27. could you add this to the U st thread:

"Epics things that went down at Ust:
-lots of Yatzee and the brown and Tunderbird TC
-City of a Beer by the Sacto Apes
    -The Roms
-The Dude with the shirt song
    -some peep offs
    -Ed hunter bashing xmas party
-Ben Casey and Rivendell birth place
-8 track movie in the back yard
-crochet with Boones Mia Tia + vodka

as for cars in the back yard, i seem to also remember
there being Jay's topaz and also Lucian's 'parts' car
that he tried to move quickly after he pissed off a
bunch of the Tower Mag bros that hung out there (didnt
get it moved fast enough, though)
