another super annoying r. kelly review

Here, I'll solve it for you , Becca. Is he being funny? OK, remember how he kept laughing? Remember when he put on that silly outfit and began singing booty in an operatic style? Yes, he is a mix of funny and r&b genius. Can you wrap your mind around that once and for all? You know how Jay-Z is one of the best rappers alive and he also mixes jokes into his lyrics all the time? It's like that. And no, no one would pay 55 bucks as a joke. We were all there because we have been enjoying his music for years. His music is sexy, and believe it or not, people often fuck while listening to it. Not ironic fucking, real sex. Not everyone likes to listen to coldplay or modest mouse while they get it on.

  1. Also, to comment on my own post, Becca may have noticed that the show did not even near reach its climax when R. did "trapped in the closet" that whole phenomenon was cool and all, but I think that his fans prefer his other hits much more. That was just a novelty hit, not the pinnacle of his career. Personally, my favorite R. Kelly song is "when a women's fed up". It's sick.

So many good songs (and I also love when a woman's fed up) but I think may favorite is "Step in the name of love"! Everytime I hear it I think of our wedding and I get all happy.

Thanks for playing it Mario! Twice!

  3. yeah, it was rad when he came out in all white at the end and sang that. it made me really happy. or was i ironically happy? hard to tell.

I don't mean to come off sounding like a rabid teenage fan, I am just sick of the "is he joking" question which overshadows his place in r&b. If you don't like him, fine, I don't care. Just don't ask if he's joking.

As far as I can tell, the two reviews were written by people who don't even like R&B. Am I right about that? So, if you don't even like standard R&B (which R Kelley also does), then how are you gonna get Kels' crazier, freakier, funnier, po-mo R&B?

And people love to hate on what they don't get.

Don't let it bother you, B!

    P.S. Happy Birthday GW!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Ironic fucking? That sounds really hard to do.

  7. man, stephen, you had me laughing out loud at that one.

Do you have to disagree so angrily?

I mean you come off like you could kill her for her stupidity.

The fact is Beccas bright, funny, nice, and you'd probably totally like her if you knew her (or do you? know her I mean).

She may be totally wrong here, but you didn't need to accuse her of fucking to Modest Mouse and Coldplay. I mean, that was funny as hell, but a pretty low blow. I happen to know she fucks to The Cars. No, actually, I don't know that, but she has great and surprising taste in music.

I don't get the R. Kelly thing either. I love hip hop and to a lesser degree R&B, but if he's joking, the joke doesn't do it for me.

I get Kool Keith's sens of humor, and Ween's too, but R. Kelly's, it's lost on me.

And really, I don't care if he's joking. A lot of what I listen to is pretty goofy as far as lyrics and what not. His music just doesn't move me.
    Sorry.
Please don't hate me. Well, actually, go ahead, but for one of the other good reasons, not because I don't did R. Kelly.

Um, dig R. Kelly, I meant. Freudian slip?

I personaly am not a huge R.Kelly fan but it's fairly obvious the man can bust a jam like nobody has in years. His voice is tremendous. Becca was writing her impression of an R&B show ; which was the impression of someone who dosen't like modern R&B and probably shouldn't review an R&B show, though why she was shocked at folks lookin' nice and going wild at a show is confusing. Seemed a little demaening.

KLJ, you might remember when the Sac Rag reviewed the Daisy Spot performance at the Crest when they played your ICBINC show. It had way more to do with the reviewers uninformed idea (& subsequent irritation) that they were being weird for the hell of it than it had to do with what they were actually doing & whether or not they were succesfully doing it. I know you expressed some irritation (polite iritation of course!) at the review & I don't see how this is any different. Both the Bee & SNR's reviewer's reviews are basically a critique of R Kelly's personal life, an almost condescending fascination with how enthusiastic his fans are, & a predictable hangup with Trapped In The Closet. It's annoying. Review the show. I realize that a Bee or SNR review means pretty much nothing in the grand scheme of an artist's career, but lazy journalism is lazy journalism & when it casts it's shadow over something you like, you get bugged. I mean come on, I'm sure she's nice & I often like what she writes, but Becca's idea that there would be a healthy minority of people there for irony's sake is pretty out of touch. The guy sells millions of records & it ain't to chuckling hipsters.

  12. Nah, I don't hate on her at all. She wrote something lame and totally condescending. That shit about Coldplay was a joke. If she was tripping on how people were dressed then it is obvious she hasn't been to a modern hip hop or r and b show, like, ever, and if that's true then she should approach it with an open mind and not judge everyone. As Master P said, "only God can judge me". If I came off pissed it's because I saw one of the most fun, entertaining, and exciting shows of my life and both major media outlets in this city sent people to review it that don't like him and were viewing it as a joke before they even stepped through the door.

I was indeed polite in my refuting of that review. My reply is still up, and still polite.

I can dig that you strongly disagree with Becca's review, but you don't know that she doesn't like modern R&B. In fact I'd say that this is not the case at all. It wasn't lazy jounalism because it differed from your view. This stuff is subjective after all.

And R. Kelly fans can't expect us not to have trouble grasping where he's coming from, I mean, his commentary on Trapped In The Closet is so straight forward. If he's joking, as you say, then don't blame us, but rather credit him as plays it off legit. I mean, come on, they were charging folks to have their picture taken with a picture of him. That's idiotic, or it's fucking brilliant.

I meant to question the personal nature of the post not R. Kelly's merits. I like to see a more polite dialogue, considerate and what not, especially when the writer is a local, a part of our scene. Let's disagree and debate, but do so in more civil tone. You're repy to me, Miller, was certainly civil and is a fine example of what I'm talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anonymous9:45 AM

Did she judge people for how they dressed? I think she mostly commented on how she herself felt underdressed.

  15. it's difficult to take the kel seriously because of the whole SPACE JAM debacle.

    ReplyDelete
  16. OK, KLJ, fine, you're right, I should simmer down, sometimes I'm trying to be funny. But here's what I'm talking about again, taking a picture with him is idiotic or brilliant? No, it's neither, it is a standard feature of many r and b and/or hip hop shows. It's normal, it's not crazy or funny or idiotic. People there are dressed up and they want a picture to commemorate the occasion. I didn't really get that personal with her. I made a crack about liking Modest Mouse. Is that so mean?

  17. Anonymous10:11 AM

Don't forget about my duet with him! "I'm Your Angel". People NEVER let him live that one down...

  18. Anonymous10:29 AM

No. It's not that mean. Just a little mean, snarky even. But it was pretty funny too.

Is the paying to take a picture with a picture really getting common? Crazy.
I don't go to shows much anymore, but I've been to a gang of Hip Hop shows in my time, and that must be something new. Common or not it's totally crazy. Hillarious even.

  19. Back up. I'm still thinking about "Ironic Fucking".

I like to think about fucking a lot, and I find it hard to beleive that "Ironic" fucking could ever possibly occur.

    ReplyDelete
  20. yeah, that was a joke, too. apparently not a very good one. see, she was talking about people going to see the show "ironically" (using it in the wrong way that everyone uses it when they pretty much mean sarcastically), so i was referring to that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. i'm glad someone else will back me on the misuse of 'ironic.' i know language is living and all but i think when people say 'ironic' to mean 'making fun of' or 'parodying' it kind of ruins a really important concept in our culture embodied by the real meaning of irony. how's that for a non-sequitor?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous1:04 PM

you mean non sequitur. quit ruining a really important concept in our culture.

    R. Kelly is the one who urinated on a 14 year old girl, right?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good one, anonymous. Let's not get into the hoary artists vs. their art debate. It's futile. Remember who somewhat recently busted out as a kiddie porn connoisseur? Ol' Pete Townshend. Anonymous, have you stomped your Who records yet?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, language may be alive, but that's no reason for it to wage death on the term "irony," which has grown in usage to encompass things that are merely somewhat incongruous or unfortunate, to say nothing of the fact that it seems be swallowing up most the accepted defintions of sarcasm or parody. Normally, I'm just content to rail about the constant misuse of "literally" ("I literally jumped 10 feet in the air when I heard that"), seeing as how people have forgotten literally/figuratively is a distinction between the actual and the analagous, but I have some harping left over for this issue.
In short, Becca, this may be another point of contention.
Is it possible to have sex to Modest Mouse? Aren't all people of that ilk more inclined to be having sex with Sigur Ros in the background?

  27. her use of the term "ironic indulgence" is, in fact, grammatically correct. she's stating that, per her observations, paying $55 for rk is too much $$$ for those curious individuals who noramally wouldn't attend an r&b show (i.e., "academics" behaving contrary to what is expected).

  28. and another hoary debate is resurrected! i am really confused by your point, fft, but, ironically, i don't care. no j.k., maybe she used it correctly in this instance. i may accuse her of being a modest mouse lover (the sting!), but i will withdraw my accusation that she is a word misuser.

  33. I withdraw any implied accusation of word misuse as well; I actually didn't notice any in the article and sadly don't need much prompting to get on one of my pedantic word screeds. Copy editors are OK with me; that's been one of my many vocations in life.

As for Ironic Fucking, need I remind anyone here of a certain local archbishop fucking a certain webcam porn matron?... as clear a case of ironic fucking as there is likely to be.

And r Kelly certainly has something going on-- he's a musical genius on a level with Nugent and NKoTB.

  35. OMF-
when the phrase "ironic fucking" was questioned that's exactly the not so pretty mental picture that came to my mind, too.

And that R. Kelly criticism really stings coming from a lover of modern music like yourself, OMF.

I had written a comment making fun of myself for my own experience at "ironic fucking". Then I laughed at myself some more over that, and deleted it figuring no one would care.

I am glad to be proven wrong.

I literally ran the hot water heater out of hot water curled up on my shower floor after my "ironic fucking". I think it's been 7 years or so since then.

This doesn't need to be said, but I need to say it. Pet Townsend is totally innocent. It's on record that he'd gone to the cops several times trying to report things he, as a vicitim of abuse himself, had uncovered. He's a vigilante, not a perv.
A friend of mine got emails from a couple pedophiles after he published an article making fun of the Olsen Twins. He couldn't get any arm of law enforcement interested in following the leads. They could've busted him for having those e-mails on his computer.

Okay, back to the archbishop's filth. Thanks.

about the picture taking thing, um i think its more like a photographers hustle more than the artists. you know like i'll give you a % of the $ if you let me set up with my backround and lights and
do my thing. i don't know for sure but its happened a the crest that way before, so aaaa ya that my 2cents.
