Man, V-Bun looks like she's been hanging out in the O.C. with her stylized haircut, $300 designer jeans and fashionable boots. Interesting to see the transformation of a sheepherder from the countryside.

I wouldn't mind checking out that show. It would be interesting to see the crowd she draws, too.

Are you and smiller gonna go, heckasac? Cause that sounds like fun. Wouldn't it be great if it were on a weekend and not a schoolday?

PS Is her new album any good?

  3. If you've ever read an interview with her, she's anything but the country sheepherder hippy chick. More an embittered angry woman trying to sell records as part of the new freak folk thing. Disappointingly commercial, but not surprising in the end.

I've read 3 or 4 interviews with her & I've never even gotten close to that impression. She seemed really nice & sort of amazed at her "rediscoverey". Listen to the WNYC interview - it's an hour long & I doubt you'll come away with a negative impression. Bonus points for her Sacramento shout-out at about the 42 minute mark!

And regardless, Lookaftering wipes the floor with 99% of what passes for "freak folk" so if it's just some commercial act to move some units, consider me snowed..

  7. yeah, CK, please stop interfering with me pretending that Vashti is my grandma. I've read interviews with her, too, and she's totally sweet and the Animal Collective dudes were stoked on her, too, and they're all cool guys. What are you basing your opinion on? A personal encounter? If you don't like her albums, that's one thing (one thing that means you're insane), but I don't know how you got that impression.

Heckamax, we are indeed going to the show but sadly it's on a thursday. You can do it! We're also going to the Fiery Furnaces this thursday and driving home after if you'd like to go.

  8. You might be right about that as I've only read one interview with her in Dream Magazine.

Incidentally, I've been amused to find that most of the hardcore out-folk people I know think that the new "freak folk" people are all fake ass idiots. Interesting. Sufjan is particularly disliked amongst that community (Jack Rose called him a "show tunes" singer).
