second try to post

I do not trust blogger as far as I can throw it today, but I'll try.

Thanks for the speculation on the meaning of the cryptic parrot reference. You guys were cracking me up.

How did I miss that there's an Aioli in Davis? I guess I'm not missing much if the menu's identical. Their food and wine is so great! I'm glad they're prospering. I like the review, too.

I went to Bogle on saturday and had a great time. They give free tastes there. They have way more wines than I thought, at least 10 at every time and sometimes more. I tried their chenin blanc for the first time and bought a bottle, although their chardonnay (their number 2 seller) is kinda barfy. That's a technical wine term. But (here comes the cop out) I don't want to give away too much because I'm writing about it for midtown monthly. You can pick up a copy of this months issue with my stuff in it (and other good stuff) in the newstand outside tower books. I made the recipe for the cucumber salad that the chef for La Bonne Soupe contributed and it was great and a snap to make. I plan to make the other two soon.

I have a hunch that the Kabinet had a pretty good crowd last night. Did anyone reading this go to the screening of Yellow Submarine? I really want to see the 5000 fingers of Dr. T, which sounds crazy. I'll be returning from Poinsettia that day, so I may be unable to make it.

I checked out Whole Foods for the first time ever on friday night. It is overwhelmingly large. I bought a ton of wine, checked out the cheese but didn't buy, and got some wild salmon that knocked my socks off. It was fun for some variety, but overall I prefer the manageable size of Taylors because I can just pop in and pop out. But they do have some wine I haven't seen anywhere else in sac, and I've heard that people that know their cheese think they are the best.

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot that I saw/heard countryish guy Robbie Fulks for the first time at a rad late house show on saturday. I had a lot of fun. He seems like a great guy AND I got to pet a soft puppy and smoke weed while I watched him and you caint do that at the most venues.

  3. Hey, just so everybody knows, I need a Friday night ride to Poinsettia.

Also, contrary to my common attire, I think I'm going to just go naked the entire time up there. Forewarning.

Hey Olsen... i know Poinsettia gets more and more like Burning Man every day, but please:

    *No painting yourself blue
    *No drum circles
    *Keep your pants ON

..OK, back on topic... 5,000 Fingers of Dr T is maybe the weirdest movie ever made in the USA. totally and mind-boggingly amazing.

That's funny, we went to Tower Books and asked them where we could find a copy of that publication and they had no idea. Also, there was a Whole Foods in every town we stopped in on tour. Who would have thought! I only found out because that was the only place the guitarist would eat!

oh yeah, now I remember why I logged in to post: There was a great article on Whole Foods in a recent New Yorker. It's online, but I'm too technostupid to figure out how to copy the link.

I need to name this feeling that I get when I walk in to a store that has a more connoisseur angle only to find that, once again, the beer selection, while dazzling from afar, still contains little to no surprises. I think this feeling will be called "Chimayed". I was slightly Chimayed at Whole Foods. Because yeah, I get it. Chimay. Chimay Chimay Chimay. It's damn good but there are 10 kabillion other Belgian brews in the world that could use a little space on your shelves. And the beer importer (from Cooperstown, can't remember the name - actually I think there are a few from there) deal in a lot of Belgians so I know you can get a better variety. I realize that it's a gamble because maybe people won't try something unfamiliar but here's the good news - this isn't Budweiser. The shit ages in the bottle for years & years & gets better & better so it doesn't necessarily have to fly off the shelves. Of course a quick jump over to the wine section reveals most anything a wine fanatic could ever want. I did discover that North Coast makes a small line of organic beers that they sell in 4-packs. I've never seen these anywhere else - though maybe they're new. They had a Belgian (not the Pranqster - somethng else) & a stout which are both pretty good, though I can't help think that the only reason they were decided on was becasue of the organic angle. WF also carry the Full Sail Session beer which is Full Sail tipping their hat to cheaper beers from the past. The bottle is the exact shape of Lucky Lager (11 oz too), comes in old looking cardboard 12 packs, and there are messages under the bottle caps. Really drinkable & a neat idea. Full Sail - not necessarily my favorite brewery (though not bad) but they always try new things & they're employee owned. Anyway, til I'm Chimayed again, back to work.

    Hey Miller,

You need to make a request at the store. Stores don't try new things unless their corporate people tells them. But, lots of places will place special orders for requested stuff.

I wish there was a distro that had Little Creatures beer. Man, that's great stuff but it's made near Perth. Who else makes a sweet beer?

Sweet as in "flavor", not your hippy slang of "hey this weed is hecka sweet".

Where is all of the "OMG! You say Robbie Fulks at a house party! You are so so lucky." comments? I know y'all are too hipster-y to like twang, but the man is a genius. His sweet country stylings with bitter, bitter, bitter lyrics is what brought me to the dark (honkytonk) side in the first place.

They have Sessions at Taylor's too. I just saw it the other day and was enticed by the packaging but was confused by the fact it was Full Sail. Not that I don't like Full Sail, because actually, I do.

I think you got the makings of a hit song there with the smoking of the weed and the petting of the soft puppies.

  19. Miller,

All I can say is that you waited too long to check out Whole Foods.

They cut their beer selection in half over the last year or so. I was a bit dissapointed the last couple times I went in there as well. They used to have every Belgian brew under the sun, and then some (not just Chimay).

Whole Foods is the new (place that used to be better "back in the day") but I still like their cheese selection!

Someone told me they will order pretty much anything you want, (so maybe Whole Foods is the new tonevendor?)

I did go there once right when it opened & I do remember there being more of a beer selection. Unfortunately I wasn't in Belgian mode at the time. Sweet, sweet Belgian mode.

Hey Leon, didn't we find a bunch of good Belgian beers at Beverages and More a couple of months back? We ran into a guy working there that had the Belgian fever and ordered some weird trippel in a clay bottle that you ended up liking.

We also found Witterkerke Rose for girls. It's pink.

You know who was that Witterkerke Rose? La Bonne Soup. Very weird. I had some clay bottle Belgian from BevMo that was disgusting! My theory that clay bottle = sweet Belgian zone was thrown out the window. Though a lot of those clay bottle ones are good. Becky refuses to go to BevMo! Girlfriend has no control there!
