OK, peoples there's an SRD meeting this upcoming tuesday (the 11th) and we need to rally the troops. I know everyone's busy (hell, I skipped a meeting myself to go to a yoga class), but we need to get this thing up and running. There has been a start on the website but people who can help with that need to come and maybe you guys can split off into a group and talk about it. Beardsley can't do it all on his own. Margaux made up a pamphlet and it looks good but she could use input also. We haven't gotten very far on the fundraiser but we are still committed to it, and once we decide on a venue it won't be that hard to get bands to play.
If you're like me and you attended a couple of meetings and then felt your enthusiasm wane, I understand. There is so much development going on that when you start looking into it it seems overwhelming and futile. However, I think we need to remember that there are many, many folks like us downtown and that if we could just get up a working website and email list that we could have a large group of people who could call city council members or developers or picket if needed or write letters. I think that if we get a few basic things going (mostly the website) that we can just focus on areas of urgent action.
There are eleven motherfucking billion dollars worth of projects planned downtown right now and of course we can only hope to have a small influence on that, but it's better than nothing. We can't just give up and let them do whatever they want. We can't!
Right on Beckler!
ReplyDeletePaul Menard is coming to the meeting to give us a presentation on the Alhambra and N project. I asked him to show up at about 6:30-6:45. He's asked for about 20 minutes, which should give us plenty of time to ask some questions and give him some feedback without monopolizing the meeting. As Margaux has noted, he will also be at the Newton Booth NA meeting on the 20th, but I still thought it'd be cool to have him come to the SRD meeting. It makes me feel like we're legit!

I emailed Beardsley about the website...want to keep the ball rolling... is someone still working on a logo design?
ReplyDelete-Kristy
I kind of am still working on a logo. Did Margeaux have one for her flyer?

Gbomb, I just used the picture on the yahoo group page and some old postcard pictures (including the pic of the Alhambra that you used, I think) from that Sac History online photo archive http://www.sacramentohistory.org/search.php?place=17. I just realized that I will need to contact whoever owns the images and submit a reproduction request. Lame.
ReplyDeleteLet me know when you've finished the image and I'll put it in the pamphlet.
Margaux
I just realized that I didn't even aswer your question. As for logos, I didn't create one. I'm not good at the kind of thing, so if you make one, please email it to me!

It seems we are running into issues with copywrited images. Why don't we commission Chris Olsen to render something original? I'll volunteer to make him dinner, but his time might be worth a little more than that.
ReplyDeleteChris - help us dude.

ReplyDeleteHi there!
I am a friend of some of the SRD folks and the person who put together the Sacramento History Online site, so of course I have to delurk and say something. Please please please get in touch with the collection managers and just ask if it's cool for ya'll to use it. They're very nice, very laid-back people and I'm sure it won't be more than just getting a verbal okay with them. I've done this in the past when CADA and the Rio Linda School District wanted to re-use the images. Given your interest in local issues, I seriously doubt that they'd charge you - like ya'll they care about local history/culture and institutions. Making sure to get credit/clearance from them is important because they also need to keep their small institutions visible in the public eye. If memory serves me correctly, any images of the Alhambra come from either SAMCC or the Sacramento Room, so just give them a call:
SAMCC: 916-264-7072
Sacramento Room: 916–264–2793
hey, by the way, this post of course neglects to mention those who have been faithfully showing up. you aren't chopped liver in my eyes. ow! i have chopped liver in my eyes!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much anonymous! That rules!
ReplyDeleteMargaux
I was out of town last week, but should be able to come and listen this next Tues.

anonymous, my ass!
ReplyDeleteanyhoo, I am drawing a camellia right now. I am not the best draw-er, but I wanted to get something done.
I'll put it up probably this evening. I am more than willing to cede to someone who can actually draw. I gave up the idea of the Alhambra because someone said it may align us too much with the historic preservation folks. So I choose our city's flower, which I personally consider an ant bomb, but whatevs.

ReplyDeleteHey I don't work for them anymore, so I'm not really speaking in an official capacity here. At least that's *my* excuse for not signing my name ;).
Ooh, I'd really like to see what Chris Olsen could come up with. That invite for Katy's shindig was so rad.

and Margaux, contact me if you need any info on the Fn'G.
ReplyDeletemy time left in Sac is dwindling, but i'm willing to help set up what i can before i go!
kristy, beardsley and i have been emailing some ideas for the website. i've been thinking of functions and content we might want to develop in the future. we agreed that the website should be classy (i know that word betrays intself somehow) with a nod to history but we don't want it to look like a preservationists site. so, it'll be hard to find that right intersection between looking like we stand for historic preservation but also conveying the message that we like the fact the city is growing, so long as that happens in ways that are not totally out of synch with the town's history. anyhow, we're also going to email liv about it since she and tim supposedly were coming up with stuff a while back.
ReplyDeletefor example, the OPPOSITE of
ReplyDeleteTHIS.
