he probably had rabies

This raccoon tried to commit suicide off of the freeway near the antique fair on sunday and luckily local news reporters were there to capture this trivial event (can't wait for the bees front page feature tomorrow). I was totally pissed because I had no idea what was going on and everyone screamed and I thought a person had jumped off! As for the antique fair my take was comprised of: Playgirl from 97 with Brad Pitt on the cover (1 dollar), planter with a duck on it that brings my planter without plants in them inventory up to 88 (four dollars) and danish modern-type chair (40 bucks-a steal). The faire seemed very slow due to the holiday.

Ok, call me a sentimental sap, but I'm glad they covered this one.

I happened to be there when the raccoon jumped off and saw him bounce off the pavement... He was hanging off the edge of the freeway and seemed scared to death. When animal control tried to grab him he jumped off-- way past the firefighters with the catch-tarp and landed on solid tarmac. I could hear the 'thump' from 50 feet away. i assumed that he was dead or really fucked up. it bummed me out all day.

So, i for one am glad to hear that he survived and that there was a happy end to the story.

  2. I'm glad he survived too but I was really kind of freaked out by the way people were screaming,. Of course, this from the girl who screams bloody murder at the sight of a spider...oh, and I almost picked up that Playgirl...

  3. that raccoon seriously probably does have rabies because why else was it roaming around during the day? unfortunately i spread the fear because when i said i thought a person had fallen a lady nearby thought i was repeating that as a fact and she freaked out, too.

if you bought the playgirl you could have seen what was under a nasty guys kilt (his dick) and weird pictures of gwyneth and brad hanging out on a balcony naked.

  5. Is there some kind of major raccoon infestation happening in Sacramento? I really can't recall seeing lots of raccoons around before this, and I spend a considerable time out on the bike trail. But this year I've been seeing roadkill raccoons all over the place, and now this suicidal 'coon.

If my Mark Trail-level varmintology is correct, raccoons are kinda cute but ultimately pesky varmints, aren't they? I've heard stories of campers getting terrorized by whole troupes of overly gregarious raccoons. Any truth to that? Mark? Rusty?

Raccoons used to climb my back fence in the tahoe park area.My buddy botch had a fish pond that was raided often.Sactoe Creeks like Arcade Creek,Chicken Ranch Slough is full of Raccoons and Beavers.Back in my Slcc days bustin` down beaver dams was a summertime job.We find the dams back up the very next day--Damm those busy Beavers.Other than dams-- we sometimes find a someone`s hobbyist garden of patch weed.---jay

Another BIG news story: Johhny Hart, creator of the B.C. comic strip died at the age of 76. I'm sure OMF is very, very sad over this!

Hagar the Horrible presided over the services and Andy Capp got drunk and puked into the casket.

I'm only sad that Johnny Hart turned into a weird, not-funny, jesus freak in his last years.

i might feel worse if he'd jumped off a freeway overpass...

  10. can mort walker be far behind?

while i hesitate to say that i'm GLAD that someone has died, his cartoons were really f-ed up. they were often so confusing that i don't think people realized how lame they were.

Johnny Hart is probably up there chastising Charlie M. Schulz for drinking a beer(s)...

Is there a Special Place in heaven for the creators of unfunny comic strips (Hi & Lois, Funky Winkerbean, Cathy, etc)?

so i always hear that johnny hart was an innovator, a rebel, in his early days, and that BC was originally funny & even somewhat groundbreaking, before hart quit drinking and found jesus. but i have yet to see any examples of these early strips (not that i've looked). does anyone know where to see some of hart's early work? i know i liked BC when i was a kid in the 70's, but, hey, i was a kid, and it was a comic strip.

BC was pretty weird and funny before the eighties. It was very random... like that whole thing where BC writes on a rock and then floats it across the ocean only to have it float back with another message. That makes some sort of sense now that you're used to the convention, but it's a weird idea to come up with in the first place. i don't know if/where vintage BC is reprinted, or if it's really necessary to dig up the old strips... but there WAS a time when it was interesting.

The most specialist place in unfunny comic heaven must be reserved for the Bil 'Family circus' keane. A legend in not-funny-ness. it really says something when he's done that strip for forty years and one Dan Clowes parody ('Daddy said I shoulda been a 'bortion and then he passed out') is funnier than anything ever actually in the comic.

Speaking of 'it was funny when i was a kid'... anybody else remember 'Tiger' which seemed sorta like Peanuts if it was drawn by the Tumbleweeds guy? I loved that strip and now i have no idea why.

I never get tired of the Bil Keane parodies and that 'bortion one always makes me laff!

As a kid, Tiger never really held my interest, nor did the Tumbleweeds. I was always fascinated by Andy Capp though, even if my fifth grade brain didn't always get the humor. Maybe it was the comic's style that drew me in. I loved the style of The Born Loser too, but that was also "unfunny" to the kids. And how about them Lockhorns?

Something about the Tumbleweeds art freaked me out as a kid! I was much more of a Fred Basset type. I also loved Born Loser & had totally forgotten about it til just now.

Oh yea...I'd forgotten all about Fred Basset. I liked that one--it was one of those quiet, low key comic strips.
