The Tyvek show was really fun. The one at the DAM house next week promises to be off the chain, so you should try to make that one if you didn't come to the one at fools, or even if you did.
The 916 did not exactly represent last night for the Finches, so the show started out a little bit iffy, but Carolyn was in such top form with her stream-of-consciousness banter and then of course there were the wonderful songs so by the end the show was saved! The sound at Fools was really good, too. I'm sure they will be back again, hopefully to a packed house.
Once again, a ton is going on this weekend. The Sounds of Sacramento thing is tomorrow night. The Dixon May Fair is going on this weekend (opens tonight in fact). The theme this year is "barn to be wild" so expect the unexpected. There's a demolition derby on sunday at 600. If you have never been to a demolition derby, I highly recommend it, it's quite exciting. Saturday night is second saturday, of course. San Kazagaskar will be flexing and playing outside body tribe, and Alkali Flats will be playing at a location that maybe I'm not supposed to disclose? I'm not sure if it's a secret or what. Sunday is the antique fair under the freeway. I'm tired just thinking about all this so I think I will just stay in and watch Scarface instead.
they're playing at sn&r
ReplyDeleteI went by Fools last night at 9:30...and it was completely empty. Then I went back at 10...empty. Finally by 10:15 I gave up. It is a school/work night.

I know, I'm super tired myself. It's totally understandable that not many people made it, it was just a little sad, cuz they're on tour and they got some gas guzzling rental and are barely breaking even. But their shows in Sac are usually great. Hopefully they will play a show at record club sometime. Shows at fools never start before ten, except I guess now the sunday and monday ones are supposed to start at nine. I really wish something could be done about the show time disease. Like the performers were all there by like 900, and could have started because even though the Spaghetti Factory was still open the show was completely quiet, but then of course they don't want to play because no one is there yet. What they didn't know is that not many people were going to show up later, either. I don't think that is something that will ever, ever change. There have been so many times when I show up on time for a show and have to wait around an hour or more.
ReplyDeleteHey Beckler-
ReplyDeleteYeah, that was a great show last night, but I was purty surprised when I got home and the clock said midnite-thirty. I wish they could start quiet shows earlier there.
Thanks for the plug - it's no secret or anything. The Alkali Flats will be playing in the News and Review parking lot at 20th and J, right in midst of all the gallery hubbub. Prob'ly around 6 or so?

i thought it was an outlaw ambush show to force them to give you the sammy. the bananas are nominated this year, too! yeah, i was BUMMED when i got home and looked at the clock. sometimes opening bands need to suck it up and play to the three people who are there, that's the lot of an opening band.
ReplyDeleteMay I be the first to officially say that The Bananas finally being nominated for a Sammie breaks the longest string of injustice this town has ever seen?
ReplyDelete-charvey
This is not the first time the Bananas have been nominated for a SAMMIE.
ReplyDeleteSecond I believe. Hall Of Fame here we come!
ReplyDelete-miller
I've been marking my SAMMIES nomination sheet as spam the last couple years since they won't take me off their mailing list. I'm sure complaining about it in public will get them to rectify this.
ReplyDeleteI think the only one I filled out, I nominated Alkali Flats, the Bananas, and the 4 Eyes for everything. Was I in Australia when I did that?
It's been a long since I've seen a band that makes me wish, "I should play in a band". The Ski Instructors (I just wrote Skin Instructors) and Crimson Ghost has covered that for the last couple years.
Now to call charvey and see about buying myself a Norton.
I showed up just in the nick of time to hear the Finches last night. They are so adorable! I wanted to say hi to you, beckler, but, much to my embarrassment, I was a little too affected by their music to talk to anyone. I'm not sure what it is that moves me so much (something in Carolyn's voice, I suppose). It has nothing to do with the lyrics. I would feel the same way if I didn't understand English.
ReplyDeleteOh wait: I meant to write "The Bananas WINNING a Sammie breaks..." etc...etc..
ReplyDeleteI forgot that the rest of you don't have time machines. Hope I didn't spoil the surprise.

P.S: The Alkali Flats lose again for the third straight year. There's no surprise there.
awwww...that's sweet, emily. that's what tripped me out so much about that dismal pitchfork review, even if you don't give props to the music or songs (which i do but they didn't) it's not like you hear a voice like that every day! the jerk didn't even mention her voice. that's what i noticed first thing, it just cuts through and is so clear and pretty.
ReplyDeleteif the alkali flats lose a third time at least they'll get voted into the sammies hall of shame. face it, you guys just aren't as good as dusty brown or jackie green. or ariel pink. that's a color joke, folks.
The Whole Earth festival is happening this weekend. I haven't gone since I was 16. Am I the only one excited about this? Is it because I am an earth mama-to-be?
ReplyDeleteAnna
and re: the sammies.... The Tiki Men never even got nominated.
ReplyDeletetalk about 'bullshit'...
eventually (maybe when the bananas have been together 20 years?) they should give them an honorary award, like how the oscars gave the award to altman.
ReplyDeletei think that CSUS should give chooch an honorary degree, the way other institutions do when they recognize that someone is such a genius that they're obviously deserving of a title. sorta like when the university of manchester awarded doctorates to barry and robin gibb. i think bob dylan is a doctor too.
ReplyDelete"...eventually (maybe when the bananas have been together 20 years?)"
ReplyDelete2011 - mark your calendars!

Ralph Stanley of bluegrass banjo fame was awarded an honorary doctorate from some podunk college in the South and it went completely to his head. I met him at a show at SF State and he was introducing himself to everybody as "Dr. Ralph Stanley". He autographed my record the same way, and I guess he insists on being addressed as "Doctor" these days. Koo Koo!
ReplyDelete-charvey
Chooch got made an honorary Ayatollah of Rock N Rolla a few years ago & he says he's happy with that.
ReplyDelete-miller
i was imagining the ceremony and thinking about how altman revealed his heart transplant as a surprise part of the speech at the oscars, m.r.m could reveal that his heart has been replaced by a baboon heart during his sammies acceptance speech. or that his coffee had been secretly replaced with sanka.
ReplyDeleteWell, yeah, any schmuck can get a degree, it takes a certain puissance* to be a Ayatollah of Rock n' Rolla

fancy pants!
ReplyDeleteSo who, then, is the warrior of the wasteland?
ReplyDeleteI mean, I'm not just saying it's me, but I did write a song about it.
