Wow, the SNR is all up on my jock today. Sweet, that's how I like it. The predicted review of Pizza Antica has rolled in.
But I don't want to talk about that, I'd like to talk about the secret Compton's Market. I wish I would have taken a picture of the goddamned sign like I meant to yesterday, it's rad. I'll take a picture next time. It's so secret it seems to have no web presence whatsoever, not even a yellow pages listing. This market is pretty ok. Good produce, good food mags, nice cheese section, terrible and expensive beer selection however. Have you been? The nice thing is that it is in the general area of the Alhambra Safeway but with a pleasant bike ride there rather than an excruciating one. Man, the Sacramento Archives has a computer with pictures of the interior of the Alhambra (taken by Pat Melarkey) which I had never seen before. It made me sadder than ever that it got torn down. If I had a time machine, after I went back in time to kill Hitler, I would maybe try to stop the demolishing of the Alhambra.
i read an article the other day about an aspiring hiphop artist who works at compton's and sells his cds in the checkout line. apparently he's a big hit with all the ladies that shop there.
ReplyDeleteStraight outta Compton's!
ReplyDeleteWas it weird being that close to Gilchrist? Did his eyes glow red?
ReplyDeleteThat Pizza Antica review was another argument for a 5 star review system. That didn't sound like one star away from excellent to me.

yeah, but to change the number of stars 2/3 of congress would have to ratify the amendment and it would still be subject to presidential veto, so just keep dreamin', it ain't gonna happen.
ReplyDeleteIs this the same Compton's market on 14th Avenue across from the Tallac Drive-In?
ReplyDeletenope, it's on mckinley, but I know the one you're talking about, is that market a Compton's? Comptons is interesting, I don't know how large of a chain it is, but they have their own, in-house stuff like marinades and salad dressings. The one on McKinley bbqs stuff outside to sell.
ReplyDeletewhat do you think of the burgers at that place? i remember them as pretty good.
ReplyDeleteThe burgers are excellent! Just moved to the area and have been walking there once a week just for the burgers. Try em!
ReplyDeleteThat market in Tallac Village (14th Avenue at 60th Street) is no longer a Compton's. I forget the name of it now. The donut shop nearby is pretty cool, and there used to be an AA group upstairs that my pals called "The Bitter Carpenters Club," but they got booted outta there last year.
ReplyDeleteI love old 1950s suburban shopping centers, by the way, especially the marginal ones.
Oh, and that Compton's in East Sac is pretty cool. Even though I'm a vegetarian, I still love markets that smell like cured hams when you walk in. That bird-thingee logo is pretty nifty, too; it looks like it might've been designed by Sergio Aragones, who drew "Spy vs. Spy" for Mad magazine.
ReplyDeletesorry to bust you out Jackson, but Sergio Aragones didn't draw Spy vs. Spy. That was by the late Antonio ProhÃas. Aragones drew the tiny lil side cartoons in Mad.
ReplyDeleteDid Aragones draw Spy Vs Spy? I thought it was someone else. Laziness is preventing me from answering this question in about 2 seconds. But yeah, regardless, I love the Compton's mascot too.

Whoah! You're quick Foster.

It's the Western Family Grocery now and it pretty much sucks. Now that Sam the butcher left (from Taylors!) they have no meat so it's good for beer but that's it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the correction, Tim (and Scott). You're right. I shoulda looked it up. I was going on memory, and I got mixed up. Anyway, that's what that Compton's logo reminds me of.
ReplyDeleteWait, I'm confused. I thought Sam the Butcher was the guy who used to have hi own place on Elvas Ave and then moved to that market in Old Sac. Is there another Sam the Butcher from Taylor's?
ReplyDelete-Michele
I grew up 3 blocks from that Comptons. I loved it, would stock up on candy bars and sometimes pick up a loaf of bread if mom forgot to get bread at little Luckys on J street.
ReplyDeleteMichele-You are thinking of Al the butcher that had the place on Elvas. He eventually wound up at David Berkley but might be retired by now. Sam was a long-time Taylor's guy.
adk
Oh yeah, the Uptown market on 17th and Capitol and the Curtis Park market on 2nd Ave both used to be Compton's also. I am pretty sure that is the only one left.
ReplyDeleteAnna
I grew up by that Compton's as well, I was on 43rd & A. The best was when they had Coke in glass bottles for.. what was it... 47 cents? Or was it an 8-pack for $2.47? I can't remember, all the junk food musta zonked my memory cells....

I went to Theodore Judah Elementary, just around the corner. When school let out it was on! RUN to Comptons for Chick-o-stix (3 for a quarter)and Lick-M-Aid (I only ate hyphenated candy, apparently.) Does anyone remember the Comptons out off of Fair Oaks Blvd? I think it was at Watt and the big Spy Vs. Spy-looking sign outside wore a red striped bathing suit and looked down onto Fair Oaks as you drove west.
