curse you, Davis

I have been sick and grumpy as hell. Eating one of the worst meals I've had this year last night at the Dos Coyotes in Davis sure didn't help. Curse you Davis! We needed to eat before heading to Winters for the Jonathan Richman show (should have just eaten in Winters) so I tried something that dos calls a "Ranchero burrito". Coldish tomato soup on your cold chicken burrito, anyone? What? No takers. Weird. Anyway, I'm glad I rallied and went to the show because it was rad.

Here are some cruddy pictures that I took just so you could see how cool the new Palms is. I didn't want to use a flash to take pictures of Jonathan Richman. What a wonderful venue! I hope there are more shows that I want to see there. J. Rich was in a great mood. He was probably stoked to have a crowd that wasn't yakking away the whole time. You could have heard a pin drop for most of it so he played and sang very quietly a lot of the time. He did a kinda medley of "corner store" and "old world" and now that he's a bit older (although still looking handsome) it really choked me up to hear him bid goodbye to the old world. He played for an hour and half and it really flew by. He's the best.

  1. Dos Coyotes is the suck. The bean and cheese burrito isn't bad but it's expensive for what it is. Skipper took me to a Mexican restaurant in a strip mall in Davis once that was really good. I don't remember the name of it but it was so packed at 9pm that we almost didn't get a table.

  2. It was called Guadalajara. It's ok. No food in Davis can be good, it's not possible. I was really feeling sorry for myself because I was about to eat my third gross meal in a row, until I just discovered that I can meet GW at Vientiane in West Sac for lunch. Yeah!! My day is looking up. This morning I was whining about eating a burnt safeway bagel for breakfast and having to eat lunch in nasty davis again, and scott was making fun of me for being a baby and I said "Ruth Reichl never has to eat crap like this". I know, I'm no Ruth Reichl, but I can dream. Check out dj Rick's reviews of Davis places, they pretty much sum up what I'm trying to say.

OK, did anyone else see hear that Diablo Cody chick on fresh air? And that douchey director of Juno (the movie she wrote)? The director is the son of Ivan Reitman, who he will never touch as far as talent (his other movie was thank you for not smoking which I don't have to go see to know that it sucked). Anyway, she really gets on my nerves. It was annoying hearing Terry Gross talk to her about stripping. What's the big deal? Jeez, she didn't even do it for that long and she already got a book deal out of it. I think Juno looks really crappy. Nobody talks like that! Too many snappy retorts. And I already read somewhere that she namedrops the Moldy Peaches in the movie. Barf.

  4. p.s. yesterday I was stricken by about five hours of stomach pains because I wore high-waisted pants. Does anyone else have this problem? How did women used to deal with like contricting pencil skirts and shit? I know, all this whining and stomach pains is making me sound pretty fun. Pretty pretty fun (imagine Larry Davis saying that).

So you hate Tommy and Clarence? two dudes I love.
We have so many things in common and then we part ways so quickly.

p.s. I was one of those people eating it up, and I won't feel bad for it! (not that you would want me to, I just feel the need to defend myself.

we agree on high waited pants though, restrictive!

YES! Jesus, I am so waiting for the Diablo Cody backlash based on all the fawning reviews of Juno and articles about how 'edgy' she is for being a former stripper - like there already isn't a glut of badly written 'stripper memoirs' out on the market.

I was impressed with Terry Gross for not smacking the crap out of her for being so annoying and affected during the interview. Her whole speech pattern is like a 12 year old who's trying to get across 'hey I'm sooo funny!' which is totally not funny.

Yeah I know, but there is just something good about it.
We will just agree to disagree.

  9. how about how awkward it was when she totally urged terry gross to ask her about her divorce and she wouldn't do it!

  10. or when the reitman kid pointed to diablo cody's ad lib of the line about babies in china being given out like "free ipods" as being proof of her brilliance?! that line was so not funny.

Oh the "I'm in the phase where I'm really into talking about it!" comment? The was second only to the "It took stripping for me to discover that I have exhibitionist tendencies!" for self deluded comments. Gross gets points for not snorting in response to either one. If I'd been in her position, I would've started drilling Cody about how "my experience in the sex industry" as the foundation for supposedly feminist writing/art" angle was played out 5 years ago. Or to paraphrase something that a friend likes to point out, when will these people start artistically exploring why this is the dominant form of artsy "feminist" expression. And how much of that dominance relies on the easy reception (and possible cash) that will flow from a male audience?

The Reitman kid sounds like a twit too. Although everytime I hear about Jake Kasden, I get them confused.

  12. Jake Kasdan was involved with freaks and geeks, right? i guess imdb could answer that.

He sure was. Also the "Walk Hard" movie which looks goofy. But his interview with Terry Gross was about 100 times more funny than Diablo Cody's so-called shenanigans (which I guess means I should stop confusing him with the Reitman kid).

  14. OK, I know you hate Davis food, but I have to say, but I have to give you a great place to go. Ding How, near Guadalajara is awesome for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. If you're vegetarian, ask for the Vegetarian menu, THEY HAVE ONE, it's insane. It's pretty much everything on the menu (plus other stuff). I've been going there since I was a kid, and it always rules. Lunch special is rad too.

  15. After extensive research across the USA, I am developing a theoretical model of the world wherein it is impossible for a college town restaurant to be good. This world is populated by exactly three types of people:

    1. 19-year-olds who are a.) fairly cash poor, b.) not picky, just stoked to be going out to dinner because it makes them feel adult to be finally making their own decisions about where to eat, and c.) easily impressed by the novelty of exotic foods like "noodles", "falafel", or "vegetarian".

    2. business owners who are happy to serve them cheap crap that roughly fits into those novelty categories.

    3. the staff of these restaurants? You guessed it: 19-year-old college students.
