Goodbye to Mrs. Lee

The most important item on the agenda is to let everyone know that the Lees have sold Lee's hardware at S and 10th and their last day there is on June 30th. Anyone who has lived on the Southside should go by and say goodbye to Mrs. Lee, I think she would really appreciate it. A "what's up" to Mr. Lee will probably go unnoticed. I interviewed her yesterday, and hope it will go in the SNR, but if not I'll post it here.

I interviewed Mr. Maalouf and I like the way it came out. Love the picture.

The Mayyors absolutely killed it last night. I was in the room with them when they started and it was ear-bleedingly loud and people started to pour beer on each other and crowd surf, so I fled into the kitchen. I was set to cut out early and started to make my way through the living room when I realized that they sounded fucking great. Really ominous and heavy. The Pizzas were really good and funny, too. I liked when Charles sardonically dedicated the song "Too Popular" t0 the Mayyors.

  1. I paid a visit to Lee's this week, it's definitely sad to lose another local business and central city hardware store--now I think all we have is Ace on I Street. The building is great too--the zig-zag roof is pure mid-century Googie. The mid-century stuff is at great risk, especially in Midtown, because it isn't still quite old enough to be recognizably "old building" to the general public and therefore something worth saving. Mid-century modern is very hip in the actual preservation community, but when we start talking about saving things from the 1950s-1960s people claim we just don't want to knock down anything and we're just obstructionist NIMBYs and bla bla bla.

I like shows at the Funcastle because it's such a gorgeous Craftsman as well as the quality tunes. I too wimped out and moved to the wimpy old fart section, but stuck around because, yeah. They are a cheeseburger of a band: drippy, messy, probably unhealthy, but they taste real good.

  2. The Lee's have sold it to people who are going to cut out the hardware aspect (by the way, the hardware is deeply discounted until tuesday, also), and focus on grocery. They'll have a lot of space, so I imagine it might be more of a real market, rather than a place to buy Doritos.

Unless they sell a ton of hardware in the next few days, they're gonna have a shitload to move & store somewhere. I love that when I asked Mrs Lee what they were gonna do with what they had left, she said "I don't know, take it home I guess."

This just in: they're jackhammering all the 60's fish sculptures off the side of Mrs Lee's right now. Shit ain't right.

In other block news, Gam Lei Sig has been closed by the health dept again.

  7. Hmm, the Gam Lei Sig report is not yet available online. For the record: Mrs. Lee and Mr. Fong do not own Gam Lei Sig.

    wburg,
The day I finally remembered to bring my camera to work with me so that I could walk over and take a picture of the store, they had just painted the nice turqoise accents a (surprise!) beige. Now somebody told me they are taking the ceramic fish off the 10th street side. Too bad.

  9. Good news: Cheung Hing and Capital Tea Garden were inspected yesterday and passed! Cheung Hing must have got the tipoff to remove that bin of lukewarm chicken parts from the vegetable area.

I don't know what the Diet Coke guy is doing right now, but at 1:00 on the dot he'll be going to Mrs Lee's. ON THE DOT.

    Bill's doing something mild.

  12. I just noticed I used an apostrophe incorrectly earlier. Not the first time, not the last, but usually I sense when I'm doing it.

LOVE the Maalouf story! He is such a sweet, old softie, and you did a great job of conveying that. Looks like it's Labneh for dinner tonight.

  14. Glad I had my camera and took a photo earlier this week. At some point everything will be either gone or beige, so take the photo now.

i hope the new owners continue to sell 12 packs sawed in half to make 6 packs. Mrs. Lee would tape em up which made nice little handles. Fun to buy!
i'm gonna miss that sweet lady.

  18. I love Maalouf's. He always calls my husband "boss" and makes faces at our baby. Spinach pie and labneh is my favorite Friday night dinner. That or a falafel sandwich.
