music talk

Woah, the infamous full moon bike ride posted to undietacos?!!?!? What tree in central park?

sorry! so boring. nothing to post. let's talk about music?
records I'm excited to get:
Casssss Mccoooombs
Camera Obscura (did anyone hear anything about Agent Ribbons playing with them, like how it went?)
Fiery Furnaces new one
I ordered the Exploding Hearts LP

Did you pencil in the best show ever onto your calendar? Namely, Thee Makeout Party, Thee Pizzas, Thee Dreamdate on August 22nd at Luigis. Hopefully I will get to DJ in between? Better yet, write it in indelible ink-on your face!

Also, English Singles, MOM, astounding DJ stylings of Mike C., and bands I have not heard of called Bleak House and Fort Ancient. Monday night at the Press.

Record Club movie night on Sunday is showing the Roky Erickson movie. I heard it's good. It's at the ToHo at 8:30, a highly civilized hour.

Rose Melberg is coming back to Sac. Not sure when.

  2. true. mom hardly counts because she plays really briefly, but yeah, last time the singles played a monday night show i watched them and bailed, even though i wanted to see the other bands.

  3. Slow guy asks: what's with the archaic objective case of thou, i.e., thee?

Inside joke, fad or secret conspiracy?

It strikes me as signifying the "magickal," like some record distributed through World Serpent.

  4. it seems like it's kind of a garage rock tradition at this point, i don't know who was first to do it.

I want to blame Billy Childish for using "thee", but there were 60's bands (Thee Midniters, etc.) doing it long before he did. I'd guess it started with American bands trying to sound British during the British Invasion, then it passed back to English bands again a bit later.
Unlike Th' Losin' Streaks, which is clearly American, probably soon to be copied by some Italian band.

  6. Oh, wow, way older than I was thinking. And probably has nothing with occult underground music. I was thinking of this guy's blog: http://theebradmiller.blogspot.com/

    THE CHARLES ALBRIGHT XXXPERIENCE!

If you are a fan of Charles' awesome solo 7" (first self-released, later repressed on SS Records), then this will be your first rare opportunity to see these songs performed live. Charles will be backed up by the fellas in Vol. 4. This should be pretty tremendous.

Also, two really rad bands from Canada are playing...

    THE DEFEKTORS
    http://www.myspace.com/defektors
    SEX CHURCH
    http://www.myspace.com/sexchurchnow

The Defektors are in my mind the best and most irresistible straight ahead rockin' band in Canada right now. They've got a dark sorta early-Wipers vibe, and yet some of their songs are also kinda glittery, too. Really catchy and clever in way that no one should hate. New LP just in time to follow the two 7"es so far.

Sex Church have a couple of members who were formerly in Ladies Night. Anyone who saw the Ladies Night show at Delta of Venus a few years back should remember it as one of the most rockin' and exciting performances to happen at DoV during that heyday of five-shows-per-week. It ended with a scary band scrum. Sex Church is different...not as wild and noisy...this is more seductive sounding and kinda psychedelic. Sorta gotta post-Black Lips generation quality to it.

You will only regret it if you miss it.

Oh yeah, forgot about them. A friend who worked for A&M sent me one of their albums. I think it had one good song on it. Still, with a name like that, clearly they were going for an American vibe.

Fort Ancient is a mysterious Four Eyed solo extravaganza from Vatican City State!!(holy city)
Bleak House is a no wave folk duo from S.F.
MoM's 7inch "smells like dirty dirty dog dicks" was favorably reviewed by Wire magazine.
English Singles are not single English Instructors..

  11. Drinking OB Blue "The Original Quality Beer since 1933" for the low low price of 2,350 won (for the tall boy can) while listening to Adrenaline OD. I've only been up 20 hours but I've heard staying up till 11pm counteracts jet lag. Just another 2 more hours!
