I am crazy for tri-tip! Such a good cut for barbecuing! This is rubbed with kosher salt and sage and thyme from my garden.

I made a peach pie with a pecan streusel top from a recipe in Bon Appetit (my consolation subscription since Gourmet went bust). The peaches from the co-op were hard and green-ish, but I crossed my fingers it would not matter in a pie...
and it didn't!! This pie basically has an oatmeal cookie on the top and is delicious. That's Gunther's vanilla on the side. Perf.
I've set the internet on fire with this post I can see! Tell me about your favorite river spots and how to get to them. Ones close to downtown, not the South Yuba or nothin'.

ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure the Peach Festival in Marysville is this weekend, though I heard that last year it was a total bust.
It's probably too late into the summer for this one, but usually, the first few 80-degree days of spring are the perfect time to hike along Cold Creek to where the trail crosses the creek, and then hop across stones to any of the three secluded swimming holes back there. If you're not familiar with Cold Creek, its the seasonal creek which flows during winter and spring and the early part of some summers in the Stebbins Cold Creek Canyon biological reserve, which is property of UC Davis. It's a few miles west of Winters on Hwy 128, about a third of a mile short of the Monticello Dam at Lake Berryessa. You'll see a couple parking areas for it in the pitch of the deepest curve between the Putah Creek crossing and the dam. These are pretty secret even to most people in the immediate area...especially the 2nd and 3rd holes. The stone-hopping and reed-wrangling can also seem to be too much hassle. So, a lotta would-be swimmers turn back. But it's really not that bad, and it can be totally worth it when the water's good, which is usually in late April through early June depending on how the winter/spring rainfall has been.

Like I've been saying since I got laid off, when are they going to fix the damn levees? And what is this term? Is it supposed to make one think of bodegas or Borinquen?
ReplyDeleteAlso pretty sad they're copying the Reno City Council. They made a big deal about knocking over the Green Room to build an open air public market. So far, they would've been better off letting the bar stay in place instead of having a parking lot where people buy overpriced produce and crappy arts and crafts.
