too late

I finally got around to reading NM's food cart story.  Really good.  I didn't realize that Paragary went on the record against them, and I liked Joshua LT saying calling them "roach coaches" was "crypto-fascist".  A stupid commenter on SacPress today said that gourmet trucks should be allowed but "roach coaches" should not.  So dumb.  I think it's sadly funny that I got offered this article that became a cover story.  I don't think I'll ever get a cover story. How long are they?  I think the longest thing I've ever written is maybe 1500 words. I STILL think that the Hmong cookbook story should have been the cover, whether I wrote it or someone else did, even though I was not altogether happy with how that story turned out.  Hmm...I should probably keep all of this to myself.

  1. I erased that post about you know who quotsa guy to stop heckasac showing up in internet searches on him, but today I got 1 hit for "brewer and shipley" 1 for "how to regulate ganja production" (wish I knew) and 1 for "viggo tail". love it!

Have you ever tried to freelance outside of Sacramento, B? I love writing for sn&r when the opportunity arises, but I often wonder why I don't expand my horizons or whatever. I should probably network with other local freelancers, too, come to think of it. Anybody have any protips re networking?

  4. Nothing has really panned out, and there are a few reasons:
    I'm not good enough
I don't enjoy the kind of bland writing that it takes
    I don't have the time

I had some initial interest in an article on Dutch beer from a national mag, and I collected some quotes, and it's all sitting in my email inbox because I don't have the uninterrupted time to work on it.

I'm happy with what I'm doing, though. It's just a side job. I enjoy working with both of the pubs I work for. I didn't enjoy writing for Slice, so I don't think I'm going to do it anymore.

I hear you about the bland writing and time, but you're a good writer. You know you are. But maybe you were talking about the journo aspect of the job. I feel yr pain about that. I consider myself the 5th suckiest journalist in the world today. I'm right below Marcos Breton (that's why I give the poor man so much shit on my blog).

knowcebo, I've never read your stuff and I'm SURE you're tons better than Breton. The only writer worse than him is RV Scheide.

  7. Phew, I was beginning to wonder if a whole week would go by that OMF didn't spank on RV...

I second Knowcebo Beck. You are certainly not supbar, nor are you bland, however, you are busier than a one armed paper hanger.

  9. I don't mean to insult anyone with this post, except myself. It's ok that I'm not good enough. Lots of people aren't good enough. I'm not fishing for compliments. I'm OK. You're OK

  10. I'm happy to hear that someone else but me thinks that most published food writing (mags)---along with a great number of food blogs---are dullsville. I am amazed at the lack of personality out there sometimes. Even in the ones that I've shelled out big dollars for (in hopes I'll finally get something decent to read).

Not that anything I write is particularly stellar, I just hope someone gets a laugh once in a while.
