The Babies are playing Monday at Cafe Colonial. Is that the place adjacent to the Colonial Theater? So weird. Too bad they can't play with Sac's own Babies. Instead they are playing with dog party and sneeze attack. I love Babies, and they are poppy enough that many of you who are doubtful might like them too. Sorry to bitch but a four band show on monday, my least favorite night to see a show? not a good idea. Nevertheless, I will go.
Good cover story in the SNR. It's so dumb that people worry about eating on Stockton. We ate at Huong Lanh last night. I wanted pho but Scott didn't so we decided not to go to Pho Saigon. The pho at HL is just ok and the tendon was seriously inedible. It was more like a bone then a tendon. They have done some weird things with their menu and eliminated grilled chicken from everything, so Scott got the pork, which is the best in all of Sacramento, even though he wanted something a bit lighter. Their sandwiches are also the best. Minor point, but it's weird two people are eating hu tieu, which I personally don't think is that good. Got it at Quan Nemh recently.
Which brings me to a new strip mall being developed down their called "Long Sandwich Plaza". Long sandwich went out of business cuz it kind of sucked. The location was fine so I wonder why they think they will do any better at a different location. They better up their game.
Cafe Colonial is right next to Colonial Theatre and in the same strip as Au Lac (now actually called Anna's Vegan Cafe termporarily Lovin Hut but always the same owners) at 3520 Stockton Blvd, a few blocks south of Broadway. It's also right next to the Colony (which was once known as the Cave) which has become a really hoppin' all ages venue over the last year. The folks who run the complex offered the Colony folks the opportunity to take over the restaurant right after the latest of many struggling ventures -- the Streetcar Cafe - failed at that location. They opened it as Cafe Colonial (taking the old name cuz there was a cool neon sign there from the old days) around the 20th of September (Ken Doose's birthday fest). Currently they are doing shows in the restaurant, as well as the Colony next door (the cafe is a little bigger) several days a week. Ate at the Cafe once -- they focus on a mix of meat and vegan stuff and are open for lunch and dinner - I like what they are doing with Indian Fry Bread. They are working on a liquor license for the restaurant, current show policy seems to be respectfully BYOB (I don't actually drink at their shows, just drop acid) and they have a nice concealed outdoor patio area behind the building. Definitely a place worthy of support that is doing some really really great stuff (they have a very open booking policy and depending on the night you can see black metal, acoustic stuff, rock bands, punk, goth, rockabilly and whatever else people want to bring in + it's always all ages). Probably my favorite current legit venue in Sacramento. The folks who run it are really cool and include Mickie Rat of the Secretions as well as a handful of other lovely people.
ReplyDeleteThe only danger I've ever felt in Little Saigon is the jalapeno.

I wish the Anna's Vegan was better, but if you were to imagine a street in Sacramento with two punk venues two doors apart next to a vegan restaurant and a place of serious historic value, you woulda figured it'd be on the Grid. I'm hoping that more of the show I would've booked at The Hub find their way into Cafe Colonial or The Colony. I seriously wanna walk to a show.
ReplyDeletelooks like Dog Party may not be playing tonight with the Babies, making it a 3-band show started off by the delightful Sneeze Attack.
ReplyDeletecool! not that i didn't want to see dog party, i just need sleep
ReplyDeleteyep, I understand. More often than not, they are pretty good about getting the weekday shows done pretty early (there have certainly been exceptions -- but the folks running that place all have day jobs too - whether at the restaurant or elsewhere)
ReplyDeleteand they serve lots of meat, for those so inclined.
