Don't let your son go down on me

Does anyone else ever get goosebumps in the part of the George Michael live version of "Don't let the sun go down on me" (heh-heh) when he says, 'ladies and gentleman, Mr. Elton John" and the crowd goes crazy? It gets me every time. Yes, I am listening to Mix 96.

While I don't get chills to that moving duet, I do love the Mix, particularly Seventies Saturdays. My current habit is to constantly switch between the Mix and Eagle while driving. Although this practice may be unsafe at times, it allows me avoid Maroon 5 and Clapton for themost part, with Cool 101 being the default station.

  4. A recent quote from Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre "genius") about Clapton:

"People talk about Eric Clapton. What has he ever done except throw his baby off a fuckin' ledge and write a song about it?"

maybe all you clapton haters (meaning everyone under 40 exept me) need to start listening with your ears and your heart. heckamax, will at least defend 'bell bottom blues'? yes Clapton is a square ass dude/ guitar player but he wrote some fine songs. white room? anyone for tennis? cocaine? lay down sally? sunshine of your love? do these mean nothing! am i insane?

i don't really think all Clapton haters don't have a heart but if DB doesn't step up to defend at least the Layla album I may have to move out.

  8. Anyone who closes themselves off to the majesty of "Layla" is nuckin' futz...and that's the tooth! Speaking of Clapton, I've listened to Y92 exactly twice in the past 3-4 months -- both times at the barber shop -- and each time a Clapton Unplugged song came on...first time it was the butchered "Layla" (way to smear crap all over your own face, 'Ric!), the second it was "Tears in Heaven". Almost enough to make me forget the majesty of"Layla"? Not even close, buster blue. And what has Anton Newcombe ever done besides making that quote and heroin?

Okay, since i've been called forth to testify, I used to say I hated Clapton until the armeniac forced some bitchin' Cream tune called "Tales of Brave Ulysses" on me. And I gotta say, I'm better for it. Also, on a somewhat obscure level, Clapton has a sweet -- and I mean S W E E T -- rockin' lick that plays OVER and OVER in the film "Wonderwall".

By the way, summer is officially on for me. Butare you ready forth summer? Are you ready for the good times?

I'll call you if I watch Bad News Bears. But it may not happen tonight. I am fine-dining at the Waterboy tonight and when I'm done I may be feeling to high-brow for such a coarse movie (read: I'll be stinkin' drunk on wine)

well, he got his rep for being awesome by being in band called "The Blues Breakers" that alone is amazing.

Sunshine of my love is good enough for me to think he is ok. He's a putz, more likely more important than any of us realize.

    Charles

ps Townsend, Page, Hendrix and Ginn shred more than him.

  15. I heard George was so blissed out on whatever that he let Eric Clapton have Patty. That's not a very feminist thing to say, is it?

I'm with DP and DB. I like Clapton's old stuff. "Bell Bottom Blues" is playing on my iTunes right now.

  16. Incidentally, I just started listening to "Blues Breakers" on my CD player at work, and it's fucking killin' me!!! Get the facts, kids.

    DP,

You know I love the rock (and...maybe have questionable taste in many peoples eyes) but I cant really support you w/Clapton. I might like a couple Cream or Blind Faith songs and, yes, Layla but theres so much more I dislike...

Tess, Clapton is like everything else in the universe half good half bad. so one must accept the Clapton Yin and the Clapton Yang. Though I admit his Yang has been dominating his Yin since 1973.

    DP,
See? See? He's been weak SINCE '73 and thats when shit started gettin' good, brah!. Keep in mind you are talking to someone who recently googled the lyrics to "Bytor and the Snowdog" by Rush...

I'm sorry, as a severe guitar dork, I gotta chip in regarding EC: It's all about the Blues Breakers "Beano" album, The Cream hits, and the solo on the live "crossroads" (an actual recording of Erics skills peaking??), and then from there AOR/white blues and eventual adult contemporary oblivion. Seen recent live footage? He has the charisma of a Sac river boat pilot. Oh well, if every boomer dipshit in the world kissed your ass maybe you would get lazy too... or your manager tells you that if you suck harder you can buy a bigger guitar-shaped boat....

DP, the internet was down yesterday so I couldn't respond to your insightful questions as to whether I had "a heart" and why I "hate music" because of my extreme dislike of Clapton. You should try living above a Tiki Bar that blasts Layla every fucking night until that crappy piano part and boring ass bassline is completely ingrained on your mind, and then try to defend the douchebag.

  25. Actually, it was I who went heard Clapton at the barber, not DP. Fact.

Hey, Brew, is that place available for rent? Sounds perfect for my needs.

Um, getting back 2 George, ever notice how he inspired more goosebumps than any other pop singer in the 80's. Kissing a Fool, A Different Corner, Praying For Time the list goes on really. Whereas Clapton couldn't inspire bumps on a ... goose? Though I will admit being a sucker 4 that piano outro on Layla. Is it old news 2 everyone that his piano player who later bludgeoned his mothers head in wrote that?
