I got pizzacated at Luigis


I had only been to Luigis once, a long time ago, so after we finished the pizza puzzle, it was time for a well-deserved reward for all our hard work. Luigis totally rules. It was hopping, with pizzas lined up two deep in the oven and a constant flow of customers. We were lucky enought to catch the last few minutes of that Pistons/Cavs game while we sipped our frosty mugs of Bud Light and waited for our pizza. The crust at Luigis is my favorite in town. It's thin and crackery, like I like, with charred spots on the bottom. The veggie toppings were standard, but I've heard that they have housemade sausage (not sure if this is true) and that the meat is supposed to be top-notch, so I'll have to try that next time. Check the slogan on the box about your "home t.v.". They also had a Luigis menu from the 50s that contains the verb "pizzicated"

  3. I've had one good and one bad experience with Luigi's. I wanna give them a third try, but then I remember this little place down the street called Zelda's, then I figure "why bother?"

  4. I love Zeldas to death, but Luigis, while not exactly light food, will not make you feel like you need to hibernate and/or die from fullness like Zeldas will.

    Luigi's is the bomb! The sausage is hella good and the homemade ranch rules. Plus the owner is super sweet. Perfect place to go after a Thriftown/Sac's Thrift Avenue excursion...

    i dont like zeldas. old man luigi is da bomb. he told me his nephew is opening another luigi's around 20th and k this summer. i am in trouble now.

  11. yeh, it's supposed to be part of the MARRS project and is mandated by the owner to stay open late. I'll be there. I have to admit I have never eaten at Luigi's but would definitely visit one within walking distance.

  12. i will always think that luigi's is the best pizza in the world. i grew up just down the street, and we'd go there at least once a week, usually on wednesday. pepperoni and sausage every time! the sausage is magical, somehow.

    the owner guy is/was the brother/cousin of the guy who owned quality market (RIP). they really were italian, which is a nice quality in a pizza parlor. every time i return to sac for a visit, i sigh a long sigh of relief to see it still open.

    they had one of those mechanical bands, long before chuck e cheese. drums, banjo, bass, etc, all hooked up to pullies and servos that would make music. they would throw a switch and the machine would start playing some old-timey song. though it was usually broken. is that rig still there? it was up on the ceiling.

    i'll send this thread to my dad, who will no doubt have something to add on this important topic.

  14. Yeah, the beer on tap is amber bock and bud and bud light I think. Josh, when you're back if the new Luigis outpost is open you're going to trip out on it. It's going into a modern "stylish" building that is part of the 21st st. club scene. It's got crap like purple rockbeds outside and lights on the building that change colors every few seconds. I think it might be mandatory that Luigis II blast hi-NRG house music at all times.

  15. I'm Josh's dad, and everything he says is true...we only "ate in" a few times, opting instead to "enjoy our famous pizza at your home TV" and it was consistently very good to great pizza. I spent thousands of hours as a young man making thousands and thousands of pizzas, and can attest to the quality of their ingredients and execution. Their dough is fresh and remarkable, always being proofed in a cabinet behind the counter. Hand rolled, it is as good as it gets. I think they do make their own sausage. It isn't hard to do---heck, we even used to do that at Shakey's and Straw Hat; but the choice of spices and quality pork are the key, and theirs is excellent. I was in Sac in December, and felt guilty for weeks because I didn't go in. Josh and I were joking at that time about the boxes, and I just somehow KNEW that they wouldn't change the slogan and layout of the art. I urge all you Sacto residents to go in. If you don't like it, it won't be because it isn't good...it will be because you prefer pizza of a different style. Thanks for the blast.

    I love Zelda's too, but Luigi's is still my favorite. I've always held the opinion that any place fancying itself a "pizza parlor" or a pizzeria will rule. I think there should be some sort of licensing procedure to reserve those titles for actual mom & pop places so the corporate man doesn't bastardize them.

    Straw Hat "pizza parlors" were great places, and they were "corporate." They had Pong, the wall mounted skeet shooting game, projected 8mm Mr. Magoo/Laurel & Hardy short/Hanna-Barbera cartoons/etc and gave away styrofoam straw hats. How could you NOT like that?

    Shakey's did have the Pizza Fairy though ("ooo, ooo" ala Joe E. Ross!)...
