You are all probably having a hard time reading this because Lost blew your mind so hard, but I have not seen it so no spoilers! Jonathan Richman was very good, but my stupid GPS sent me home on the 505 and I came out on 80 in Vacaville! In the pouring rain. There was a crazy lady at the show who fell three times and her dancing was almost identical to my Grateful Dead dancing. Jonathan Richman was completely unfazed by her falling. He went and held a baby at the break. It was adorable. He sang the cellphone song.
Do you guys know about this Beer and Ballet thing? I know the name makes it sound cheezy, but really it's a good chance to see ballet for cheap in an informal setting. It's this saturday and next saturday.
I went to the Beer and Ballet last summer, and can recommend it.
ReplyDeleteSince most of the choreography was done by the dancers, the dances tended to stray away from the formal stuff you saw with your grandmother at the Nutcracker, and they weren't afraid to incorporate decent modern music into the mix.
The beer was really a bonus for the evening -- Brew It Up turned up with quite a selection to choose from.
Ah I saw Johnathan Richman last time he was here in Sac.. he rocks!
ReplyDeleteAs for Kiedis.. well dudes old school so he's going with the zinc. I think i might pick up on that fad.
Beer and Ballet... well interpretive dance makes me puke so I think I'll pass.
GPS systems are still kind of wanky. That is why I am creating National Take a Geographer to the Palms day. Date to coincide with the next time Robbie Fulks plays there.

PS - confirmation word - reefski. Polish dope, natch.
I don't know if anyone is into this, but Animal Collective is playing at Big Sur, and tickets are on sale now. The Head and I are going, and camping a night. I'm pretty stoked.
ReplyDelete-biz
looks like it's sold out. how'd you get tickets?
ReplyDeleteJust luck I guess.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering when you got them. Aw nuts! And it's at the Henry Miller library.
ReplyDeleteDouble nuts, just when I was gonna start getting into ballet, the Sac ballet is cancelling the rest of its season. I'm not sure whether that applies the beer and ballet or not.
Triple nuts, this rain is going to last.
quadruple nuts-more bad news for the arts, my favorite local theater troupe is cancelling their production of a George Bernard Shaw play in order to perform Mamet's "American Buffalo". I look forward to the Mamet play, but it's one of those safe stalward plays that local theater companies always do. It's crazy because when I interviewed the company director just a year ago (or less?), they were doing blockbuster business.
ReplyDeleteAw man, that's not good news that the Sacto Ballet is cancelling the rest of their season. There were some pretty heartbreaking stories on the news over Christmas about how they didn't know if they were even going to break even on the Nutcracker because ticket sales were down so much.
ReplyDeleteI think that Beer and Ballet is still on since it's in their studio. Or at least that is what I got from the Bee article.

Can "Beer & Ballet" be next year's Halloween show theme?
ReplyDelete-miller
Well, there may be some hope for the arts. At least the attitude in Washington has changed.

i was at the jonathan richman show and thought it was such a great place to see him. i knew, i mean KNEW that crazy lady would do something funny as soon as i laid eyes on her...
ReplyDelete-mj
It was so weird how she was quietly reading before the show, then went batshit crazy, then loudly requested "here come the martian martians" (perfect), then fell again, then went back to reading her book
ReplyDeleteThat's so encouraging to hear that Obama has an official arts policy.
ReplyDeletewe went to zanzibar, tanzania for new year's, and on the hotel's bookshelf someone had left a copy of the keidis book. i find RHCP music pretty loathesome, but fuck if i didn't read that whole huge book in like 6 hours.
ReplyDeletejchapstick
Kiedis is the best. There are so many good stories in that thing.
ReplyDeletechapstick-I had the same experience-except it wasn't new years or tanzania-hate the band love the stories, couldn't put it down.what a funny book to leave around-or maybe it wasn't an accident?
