I've never eaten at Morton's, but his review kind of reminds me how I felt about Buckhorn, which is not pretentious, just totally overpriced and overrated. Buckhorn reminds me of Jonathan Richman at the Palms tonight! I'm stoked. I enjoyed BR's review of Tre, also, which almost makes it seem worth my while to hit up this suburban spot. I have enjoyed the Haines bros food over the years. Not lately, but 33rd street bistro was one of my first favorite spots when I started to have enough cash to not eat ramen and peanut butter every day.
That Morton's review is great! However, I have to disagree with you about Buckhorn, I think the prices are really great there and appreciate that the emphasis is on good beef, without any frills or gimmick.
ReplyDeleteAlso, today's article about the new Sac Zagats Guide shocked me that the owner and chef of the Waterboy has never been to Le Bonne Soupe.
Reading the comments on that Morton's review reveals that people have some weird notions of what a restaurant review is.
ReplyDeleteSince when are reviews supposed to be unbiased? Is it just me that thinks this is weird? I never expect reviews to be objective; by their very nature they are subjective.
Should the reviewer have been more kind because Morton's has been a good employer for someone's sons?
Anyway, I feel lucky that when I was reviewing the ugly and depressing world of internet comments did not yet exist. I swear I need to stop reading them, because they just reinforce my misanthropy.

God! That review of Morton's is great! I laughed out loud at least once. Further more kudos to Blair for writing such an honest review. The irrate comments are so predictable it's boring.
ReplyDeleteI seriously don't understand the local aversion to critism. So are we all supposed to like everything all the time? Or when writing a food review follow the if-you-can't-say-anything-nice credo? Wouldn't it not be a food review in that instance?
I have to say Mortons has the best creamed spinish I have ever had.
ReplyDeletePerhaps not worth a huge overpriced meal, but delicious.
It was overpirced but my steak was pretty f-ing good, in face really f-ing good.
-Natalie.
I've only been to Buckhorn's once, and for sure, I'm not the biggest steak lover. However, my peppercorn sirloin was quite expensive (23.99) and unbelievably tough. Like inedible. They have great customer service, so maybe I should have said something. Maybe sirloin is always tough, I don't know.
ReplyDeleteThat Morton's review could apply to just about any upscale restaurant in town that I've ever been too.
ReplyDeleteThere's a difference between not feeling that upscale food is worth the money, which is pretty dependent on your income level and spending priorities, and feeling like you could make the same thing better at home.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I can't speak for the toughness, I think $24 for a steak dinner that includes soup/salad, a vegetable, and a starch is a good deal. Most steakhouses serve items a la carte (as Mortons), and you would expect to pay about $24 for the steak alone in most places.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, I didn't recall that everything came with, but it must have. I found their wine list to be dreadful, because I have peculiar tastes, so I didn't get the pleasure of red wine with the steak. Maybe smiller can weigh in tomorrow with what he thought about his. He either got the NY steak or the filet mignon, I can't remember.
ReplyDeleteIt probably doesn't help that I'm one of those pain in the ass vegetarians and I live with master chef Ortiz.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I mean fine dining is just not worth it, except for special occasions unless you are loaded. There's too much good food to be had for cheap.
ReplyDeleteWhy are you always bringing up Lil Joes, beckler?
ReplyDeleteHey, thanks once again. I wouldn't worry about the comments in The Bee. I think all 8 people who think Morton's is a good deal weighed in. One guy accused me of being opinionated. How come you get all the smart readers?
ReplyDeleteI received over 100 emails and voicemails and 5 were negative. The angry people seem to want to be validated in some public way. The stable people just wanted to email and say something pleasant.
Too bad they totally killed it by opeing up Bistro 33... ugh that place sucks! Apps are so over priced and just plain nasty I have to avert my eyes when I drive by to keep from retching!
