It was the weekend of terrible photography, so I don't have a lot to share. I'm a bit late to the party, but Atelier is pretty fucking cool. I was riding my bike down 16th, mostly to try to get a glimpse into Hot Italian (have you seen their stupid plastic bike racks? At least they have bike racks), and I passed Atelier. I saw this jacket outside and screeched to a stop. My picture doesn't do it justice. It also has a cute belt. I'm not even a big fan of red and blue together but this rain coat is a classic garment, and it fits me perfectly. I shot the shit with Joanie (Joni?), who is the owner of Opaline, which is a store within the store, and we talked about thrifting back in the day, when she used to be able to find stuff from the 20s. 30s, even the late 1800s! I will be back again soon.
I also got to partake of the pizza that Javalounge now has on offer every day. They make it from Old Soul dough, and they make the first batch at 11 and then another batch later in the day. It was very tasty, with a thin, charred crust and I got the one with fresh veggie toppings. They make their own sauce, and the tangy sauce was my favorite part. It's 3.50 for a sizable veggie or pepperoni slice, 2.50 for cheese.
Is it open yet? I went to K-8 school/Girl Scouts with the owner and it always cracks me up seeing the photo of her posing in leather jacket and shades.
ReplyDeleteAlso the stuff at Atelier is amazing! They're my new go-to place now that EcoThrift has gotten so crowded and overpicked.
p.s.-in the age old war or Converse vs. Keds, I've always been on the side of Converse because, for one, I'm not from Southern California and it's hard to rock them right if you're not from there. I am currently wearing Keds and remembering again that they are the sweatiest shoes in the world! It's really gross. How can one little (OK, it's me so it's giant) canvas show be so sweaty? I want to throw them away right now.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe my calling out of Keds didn't elicit a flood of angry comments.
ReplyDeleteI remember having the sweatiest Keds feet in middle school.
ReplyDeleteI tried some on the other day at the thrift store and instantly remembered. Its a bit clammy.
-Natalie.
Maybe its because I am not of Socal?
ReplyDeleteLast year, I wore Keds on my one and only attempt at golfing. You can add killer-blister-inducing to the list as well. I still love them though.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember them being so sweaty when I was in jr. high. Did anyone else mix and match them? Wearing one mint and one pale pink was my favorite combo, circa 1986.
Dani
my feet don't sweat in keds... freaky
ReplyDeleteI like Atelier but I would like them more if they occasionally had some clothes for those of us who are a bit overly fond of the donuts. I stopped in and found some amazing suits that I would have snapped up if my waist were maybe four inches narrower in circumference. I will continue to go in there and look for things to buy, though, because I figure someday there will be something and it will be rad.
ReplyDeleteThe bike racks at Hot Italian annoy me especially because they have taken the place of the three street trees that used to be in front of the building.
We were a converse crew in 4th grade (shortly after the pastel mocasin phase which of course followed the brief yet delightful wooden clog phase) when swapping one shoe with your bff so you each had on two different colors and also let everyone know you were bff was super rad. Then we moved on to white keds, no laces, made dirty as quickly as possible. IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT they not look white. By 7th grade I was wearing china flats, which hands down are the sweatiest shoe ever.
ReplyDeletejamattack!
I was a big fan of two different color converse hightops,
ReplyDeletePink and purple! SOmetimes I even wore a pink sock with the purple one and vice versa.
And I agree, its always a bummer to not be able to find clothes for the rounder of us at the nicer "vintage" stores. It sort of works out though, I just don't shop at them and stick to the thrift, its cheaper and I find I have more options. Plus I have to work harder.
However I have dreamt of having a clothing store or something called Fashionable Fatass. It just makes me laugh.
-natalie.
I've always wanted to open a shop called Fat n' Sassy. A search for any shops already laying claim to that name came up with this:

I can't wait to order these!
Dani
That is Fat N' Sassy!
ReplyDeleteI also like the vintage brenad, Ample Togs.
-Natalie.
I spelled sizeable wrong, right? How about that for a brand name: Sizeable togs?
ReplyDeletebrenad?
ReplyDeleteMy spelling is getting better and better.
hi beckler-
ReplyDeletespeaking of keds-can you ask smiller if he is done with my dead tapes? no hurry.
-the neighbor
Hey neighbor! I have your Dead tapes safe & sound. Foster has failed in his attempt to steal them & record every version of Terrapin Station on to a reel-to reel tape. OK, fine, that's what I'm doing with them (but on CD) - come by Wednesday & I'll get them back to you.
ReplyDeleteI know how it is, the sun comes out & you want to fire up the bus.
-miller
Jana! I definitely mismatched the ked colors (and socks which were layered with different colors and rolled down, remember that?) and totally remember the dirty white keds with no laces...we would also actually write "BFF" and other important messages all over them.
ReplyDelete-mh
you knwo the little blue rubber KEDS label on the back of the shoe? In a very sad poor kid move I tried to tape the ones my friend peele doff her old keds onto my JC Penny version. Only to have it fall off in gym. and of course people laughed. I tried to pretend I knew it was dumb, but really felt like barfing. 23 years later and I just started blushing.
ReplyDelete-Natalie.
Dude, tape was the problem here.
ReplyDelete-miller
I know, I know.
ReplyDeleteSuper glue would have been a better solution. but I was 11 what could I do.
The shoes had crazy colored letters and numbers all over them, they were so cool, I have no idea why I needed the ked label so bad.
MISFITS ROOOL YOU DROOOOOL!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDid someone give Charles a Jolt?
ReplyDelete-miller
Oh shit, The Misfits are making trouble.
ReplyDeleteThe next ten days are going to be tough on midtown.
