Today in: WTF is Marcos Breton talking about?

In honor of Cosmo's blog, I'd like to post my own version of the fun game: "What the fuck is Marcos Breton talking about?"

Mayor Kevin Johnson used to dunk on 7-foot NBA stars. Now he's laid low by lumpy union bosses and frumpy City Council members.

Breton weighed in again on the severe problems that shyster er, developer Stan Thomas is having. Once again, he goes soft on the dude, yet stops short of giving him the full blowjob he got in the last column. Remember, the one where he referred to him as "a barrel-chested bull of a man"?

Who could have envisioned that things would go so wrong with this railyard deal? Nostradamus? Madame Blavatsky? Uri Geller? No mere mortal could have figured it out I'm sure. I mean, even Breton, with his superhuman powers of observation (not to mention description) is just now starting to catch on.

I'll miss you guys so much...

This is super painful. I was trying to look through older pictures but it's making me sad, so I don't even want to. Two friends are moving away this weekend.

DP is one of my best, oldest friends. I feel like we were kids when we met. He was wearing some sort of euro scarf and using a rope as a belt and smoking hand-rolled cigarettes and right away I was riveted by this intriguing person. We've lived together in, I think, three different houses, right? One million laughs and some tears later, he is still one of my favorite people in the world. So sweet, so kind, so caring, so silly, so funny, such a good musician, such a good friend, such a good uncle and son and brother.

And then, a few years ago, he met this wonderful lady. Looking through my more recent pictures started bringing back to me all the good times I've had with Caroline. She makes fun shit happen. Whether it's a medieval meat fest or dramatic readings of romance novels or being the best Grace Slick impersonator or getting me excited about camping and canning and cooking and books and science and all the many, many things this renaissance woman has infectious enthusiasm for...I have kind of backed myself into a corner with this sentence but if you know her you know what I mean.

I am so happy for them that they're embarking on this adventure together and I wish them all the best!!

El Topo/Big Money Rustlas connection?

I really wish there had been someone at the El Topo screening besides me who had seen Big Money Rustlas, because there were some really funny similarities. I would not be surprised if ICP has seen El Topo. The biggest similarity was that the female protagonist of both movies was an attractive brunette little person. The second was the cheesy western sets. The third is a stretch, but there were dudes in makeup in both movies.

The screening was fun, with a good turnout. It looked great projected.

Movie screening tonight

OK, last night you will have to hear about this until we schedule the next one: El Topo tonight at The Hub! 730! For real, that's when it starts. OK maybe ten minutes later but don't count on it. Three dollars. Air conditioned kinda. Wear light clothing or bikinis. I was looking for El Topo pictures and I saw that one of my favorite blogs Ilovehotdogs.net did a whole post on it so look at that.

Speaking of movies, three thumbs up to the ICP movie Big Money Rustlas. It's pretty good. It's kind of like a budget Blazing Saddles.
Sugar Slam makes a cameo towards the end.
Violent J plays the heel, a character named Big Baby Chips.
Shaggy 2 Dope is the good guy and this is his mom.
Shaggy 2 Dope's character is named Sugar Wolf and his signature is this weak wolf call. They should have thought of a better signature move. I think he's a pretty good actor but I am going to deny categorically right now for the record that I ever said that he was cute.
There are videos on the DVD, including this one, which is a really sweet song dedicated to the family. Don't expect any songs in the movie because there aren't really any.

the Bee joins the fray

Now the Bee is piling on for the food cart issue. The comments seem to run pretty much in favor, even with all the normal Bee wackos calling them "yuk trucks", etc. Have we finally reached critical mass with this? I have yet to hear a single restaurateur named who called for the anti-food truck ordinance. The noise complaint thing is vague. I guess it's history and we should just move on now.

OK, you know the drill. Screening of El Topo tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Hub, 7:30, 3 bucks. I hope you will attend! If you didn't come last month, let me assure you that the movies actually look quite nice projected on the wall, the sound is good, and the air conditioner works.

I wrote about Asian Cafe in this months MidMo (and was very gratified to see they have it posted in the restaurant!), but I want to reiterate that you should check this place out! This is the chicken larb. It was even better than the last time I had it. It wasn't as salty this time, and the chicken pieces were larger. The meat is so smoky and moist and it is really strongly cilantro-ish. Not for cilantro haters.
AND you can get the papaya salad made with cucumber instead. Or rather you can get a cucumber and cherry tomato salad flavored in the manner in which Lao papaya salad is flavored. Brilliant! MidMo might have the busted society pages, but OMF made the real society pages!! The most exciting thing in the new SacTown is the picture of OMF with one of my old professors, Chris Daubert! He was my art teacher at Sierry College (I wrote that accidentally but it kind of captures the country vibe of the place) in 1992 or '93 and I totally had a crush on him. I did my final presentation on Riot Grrl. There was a collage that may or may not have contained a cut-out picture of Rollins.

Did you guys know that Rock The Light is playing their possibly last show on Saturday?!?!? With The Pizzas and Dog Party. At Luigis.

Can I have a teeny little rant here? OK, remember how Chef Kelly at Ella put a beautiful bone marrow dish on the menu quite a few months back? He had to really search to find a purveyor who would give him the bones he wanted, and I'm sure he worked hard on the perfect, very dramatic presentation. It is a wonderful dish. It was written up in article after article, including my profile of him in MidMo. The dish became a signature for them and sold like gangbusters. So....Sac being Sac, what did every other chef in town do? Did they think "wow, Chef Kelly took a risk and it paid off, so now I will take a risk and prepare pate/brains/trotters/tongue/urchin/etc."???

NO! Every other chef just put a fucking bone marrow dish on the menu!!! C'mon guys (it is almost all guys) step up your fucking game!! Step it up! I ate at Kupros on the first night it was open, which is too early to really review it (although I will say they have a couple of good brews on draught), but the only "risky" thing they had on the menu was a marrow dish. It would be funny if it didn't make me sad.

FINALLY produce is starting to roll in from the garden! This was yesterday's take. That yellow tomato was the bomb.

Last night Liv, Skipper, and I screened Holy Mountain to get us in the proper state of mind to trip you out on Tuesday, the 24th (at 730) when we screen Jodorowsky's classic psychedelic spaghetti western "El Topo" at the Hub for only 3 dollars!!
Holy Mountain is insane and it is almost more than I can take. These crucified carcasses come onscreen about 4 minutes in.
This is going to be my Halloween costume. Who's with me? The ladies below, not a flayed, crucified carcass.
There are lots and lots of loincloths. I like a man that can pull off a loincloth.

I want my bedroom to look like this, including a man in a loincloth.
Here's Jodorowsky himself as The Alchemist (he can turn shit into gold!-a useful skill). We concluded by the end that this was some kind of hairpiece as he seems to have a normal hairline later.
All in all, this movie is jaw-dropping. It does have a plot, a loose plot, and it's certainly visually interesting, and Don Cherry did the music so it sounds good, too. It is really just too much to take in one sitting, but by the time I was reaching my limit, it was only 10 minutes from the end. I'm psyched to see El Topo now.

According to the poll, most people will come see either movie, although an evenly split few will only come see one or the other. You know what Abe Lincoln said: you can please some of the people some of the time or all of the people all of the time but you can't please some of the people all of the time. So looks like we'll be going with El Topo for our Captain Trips Presents screening at the Hub! August 24th. Yes, I will keep mentioning it constantly.

On Saturday, August 14, 2010, be a part of history and attend this first ever live broadcast taping of late night horror show, "Cinema Insomnia" with host Mr. Lobo! CI is now syndicated across the country, but ironically, can only be viewed via the internet in Sacramento.

Join Mr. Lobo as he hosts the 1960's mess, "The Undertaker and His Pals" - "a macabre story of two motorcycle-riding, knife-wielding, shiv-shaving, eye-gouging, arm-twisting, chain-lashing, scalpel-flashing, acid-throwing, gun-shooting, bone-breaking, pathological nuts and their pal the Undertaker!" OK, that last bit was actually the tagline for the movie. In reality, it's short on plot, but packed with horrible puns, blood, and some scantily-clad gals just to keep it somewhat interesting. Somewhat.

amazeballs?

So...I want some feedback on our next Captain Trips Presents at The Hub. To remind you, we're showing the Kult Klassic El Topo August 24th at the Hub at 7:30 for three measly bucks. I have seen Holy Mountain, so I know how amazeballs (ha! I'm just using that word to annoy smiller) it is, but probably some of you have never seen a Jodorowsky film, and to be honest, spaghetti westerns are not my favorite genre at all. In fact, I don't like westerns and like spaghetti westerns only slightly more. Oddly, I watched a lot of the Clint Eastwood spag westerns as a child because my mom loved them. And they are boring.

I guess what I want is to hear from you guys that are interested in coming to our screenings sometimes and whether you are thinking of coming to this one or skipping it. I'm going to put up a poll tomorrow. But first, I'd like to hear from anybody who wants to convince you (and me) that this movie is amazeballs.

I'm stoked about this. My favorite theater company is moving right by my house! Although that will eliminate my only occasion to visit Old Sac. That stretch of J street is suffering, so I hope they can I hesitate to say....revitalize it.

The Verge jumble sale was awesome. Scrimshaw pilsner on tap kind of went straight to my dome. Drunk shopping! My favorite thing that I bought was a magazine for coon hound aficionados called "Full Cry". The one I got is from the 80s but I guess it dates back to the 30s . Remember that book "Where the Red Fern Grows"? As a kid I would SOB every time I read it. So I guess that makes me a coon hound aficionado and now I have found my magazine.

Don't forget that Yellow Fever/San Kazagaskar show at The Hub tonight.

OK, so Liv and Skipper and I have scheduled our next trippy film night. We'll have to think of a catchy name for it. Trip Out With Your Dick Out? No, that's no good. Captain Trips presents? It's going to be at The Hub on August 24th (that's a Tuesday) at 7:00 or 7:30 (we'll decide but whatever time we list it will REALLY start then this time) and now it will only be THREE MEASLY DOLLARS. If you are asking yourself why it isn't free since we just netflix the movie the answer is the cost of the Hub rental.

And what are we tripping your shit out with this time? Why only the grandaddy of them all....El Topo! If you're not familiar there will be info to come on what you can expect and what drugs you should be stockpiling to experience it properly. Fun fact about Jodorowsky? He officiated at the wedding of Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese.

spreading the sadness

I am in a melancholy state of mind right now because I just finished listening to "no country for old men" on my ipod (that sounds kind of embarrassing. i swear i don't usually listen to books on tape) and even though I had some real problems with the cornpone wisdom aspect of it, it's really fucking sad. way sadder than the movie, although I think the movie is better than the book overall. I thought I'd spread the sadness by sharing this story from the Bee. It reminds me of that part in the movie "Adaptation" where the screenwriting teacher yells at Nic Cage when he said that nothing dramatic happens in real life.

Ask Sacto 9-1-1: Dad of raped, murdered girl killed in confrontation

Q: I saw the question on Troy Adam Ashmus who killed Marcie Davis, but I think her father met a tragic end too. Is that right? - JoAnne, Sacramento

A: Robert "Bob" Davis, whose daughter was found raped and killed in a Sacramento Park in 1984, was shot to death in 1988 in a confrontation with a tow truck driver, The Bee reported.

Davis' life had spun out of control after his daughter, 7-year-old Marcie Davis, was murdered in Santa Anita Park. Troy Adam Ashmus was convicted of the murder and is on California's death row.

Friends and family told The Bee that the murder changed Bob Davis from an outspoken, congenial and enthusiastic man to an inconsolable and angry one.

On the afternoon of May 25, 1988, Davis and another man were beating a man and then attacked a tow-truck driver who came to the man's aid in the parking lot of the Country Club Plaza shopping center on Watt Avenue, police said.

A second tow-truck driver arrived and shot Davis to death after the driver said Davis and the other man moved toward him.

Tim Frawley, the prosecutor who sent Ashmus to death row, remembered Davis as "a volcano smoldering."

"His life went into a tailspin after Ashmus killed his daughter," Frawley said. "He might have been held together kind of loosely to begin with, but at the time prior to his daughter's death he was making a good life for himself and his family."

Frawley said the burly man burned with rage -- enough so that the judge ordered him frisked each time he entered the courtroom to watch the Ashmus trial.

"There was always concern that Bob might blow up and go after Ashmus in the courtroom, " Frawley said.
