I felt a little weird about disclosing about the card. I'm probably being dumb. Oh well, wouldn't be the first time. I just wanted the experience of going in a store and buying weed. And it was amazing. The doctor's office was unbelievably seedy, but All About Wellness was cool. Fuck, I'm all about wellness, too. Aren't we all? I wish they would just legalize it and cut out the rigamarole.
So...who's going to the Zak Nelson show at Bows tonight?
Charles is playing tomorrow at Luigis with the Cute Lepers, a band with a lot of....equipment. They sucked when I saw them with No Bunny and The Bananas, but I guess even Beethoven would suck it if he had to follow those dudes. Even Beethoven.
Man, not a lot on the calendar as far as good shows. We gotta get another underground venue going in Sac amiright? Easier said than done, I know. Anyone working on it?
But you can breathe a sigh of relief, entertainment-starved Sacramentans, because there are a couple of good plays around or coming up. B St. Theater is doing God of Carnage, which made a big splash on Broadway last year when it opened with Jeff Daniels and James Gandolfini. I hear it's really shouty. Most plays are, unfortunately. Also, Cap Stage will be opening their new season soon at the converted Armory on J st. It's another recently-written play, by the Tony and Pulitzer-winning playwright of August: Oskage County, Tracy Letts. I'm stoked.
Anybody excited about any downtown/midtown restaurants right now? They don't have to be brand new or anything. I need some ideas for a column that isn't based super far away from downtown.

Not any specific place, but a state of the economy for downtown restaurants is an interesting topic. Especially in terms of the small niche places that are doing well by providing a specific type of food and doing it well. Versus the big concept places like Spin Burger Bar et cetera that can't sustain a profitable business. The niche restaurant (which could include the food truck trend) seems to be the profitable model in this economy.
Also maybe it's me, but if you have zero interest in weed, hearing about it isn't shocking as much as the most boring topic ever. Actually other food related topic, funny how you hear a lot of artisinal coffee roasters (like the owner of Stumptown) drool over different varietals from Latin America like it's different strains of bud.

I was interested in hearing that beckler was kinda reluctant to share that she had got her card. Even though attitudes are moving in the direction of pot tolerance, there is still a stigma attached to it.
I'll share another personal anecdote, because I know this thread just can't get enough of them. I work with a gaggle of MFTs, most of them female baby boomers. This bunch is about as bleeding-heart liberal as you can get, yet all of them think it is an abomination that some of their clients are able to get pot cards. It never occurs to them that our clinic (like all mental health clinics) gives out benzodiazepines routinely. Sure, the benzos are monitored, but that doesn't keep people from becoming dependent on them. IMO, the people who ease their "nerves" (and the boredom of being poor) with pot are smarter than people who swallow their daily Lorazepam on doctor's orders. I'm the first to admit that "work, love and play" trumps all drugs in giving life meaning, but the cognitive dissonance over the drug issue really yanks my chain.
And I agree with B, the rigmarole is really lame.

The primary diagnostic criteria that you'll need to meet is a willingness to shell out about $100. You'll also need to claim that you a genuine medical malady, such as insomnia. If you have a fancier illness, fine. But insomnia alone is completely valid.

most of the time Axewave is one of the most fun venues Sac has ever had. Nice folks having crazy, good times in a basement.
Saturday night at Phono Select is a free show celebraating the release of Ken Doose's double cd comp of mostly sacramento bands and I think Charles is all over that one -- playing a couple of times that evening including with his rad new band RAD
there's another half dozen great shows happening over the next week, but those are 3 that I think you would enjoy muchly.

Since the pot topic was brought up, and I noticed Tim mentioned it in one of the last 'backpage' sections, why doesn't MM accept pot ads? Is there a reason behind this?
I'm only asking because with all the hub-bub about print becoming extinct, I would think the revenue would be gladly accepted.
I agree that N&R takes it a little far, but a few well-placed ads don't seem like they would be hurting anything.
MidMo does accept pot ads. They have one, or at least we have run them before. Apparently it's not a policy thing. I'm not sure if it's because they couldn't sell more, or if they want to keep it to a minimum. OMF wants us to have "the weed issue" soon, but the rest of us are not so sure it's a good idea.
