same one?

Does anyone else laugh when they hear that the secretary of homeland security is Janet Napolitano?

Good job, city council, banning dumpster diving.  I guess digging through recycling was already illegal, and that doesn't stop anyone.  That's really where we need to be turning our attention right now, stopping people from recycling discarded furniture and eating thrown-out food.  Every time I've dumpster dived I felt like I was doing something illegal.

Ha!  Read this sentence from the article about the proposed NBA arena at Cal Expo and tell me if is sounds familiar: The fairgrounds are 42 years old and in sore need of a makeover. Buildings require seismic retrofits. Pipes need replacing. Asphalt walkways are crumbling.
I totally agree.  Every time I go to the fair I feel like I'm taking my life into my own hands.  Also the locker rooms at the fair are very cramped and are the laughing stock of the NBA.  Someone in the comments brings up the issue of the track:

The large graphic claims the basics will be the same, however no mention of a horse race track. Horse racing has been a tradition of the State Fair since its beginning. Why Cal Expo continues to ignore the horse race track and the many jobs and history that will be lost without it is a mystery to me. How can one call it the California State Fair and have no horse racing ? Even the smallest of fairs in California have a horse race track. If the track is not allowed to stay or be rebuilt would be a loss for all. Let's get a clue Cal Expo and keep horse racing alive and all the jobs it creates for the State Fair and for California. The State Fair without horse racing is like a hotdog without a bun. If your not going to allow horse racing at the State Fair you might as well put a Indian casino at the fair. Im sure California could use another one of those...Born and raised in Sacramento..

Save our track!  I will chain myself to a horse to stop this arena if need be, despite the fact that I am scared of horses.

Did you guys read the interesting SNR article about the mayor and the possible changes at city hall?  That should have been the cover story instead of that mildly interesting thing about local skaters.  It seems like Kevin Johnson's office is just in tatters at this point.

To be fair, a hotdog without a bun could be a corndog, which is more state-fairly than the horse races. Just saying.

I only dumpster dive in Davis at the end of the quarters. That's where all the good schwag is at.

Is it illegal there?

beckler said...

Only if you smoke in the dumpster.

I'm reading about cube steak, something I know nothing about (as is true of most types of steak) and I just realized I've never had a chicken fried steak. Where should I get my first one? Armeniac? I know you'll have an opinion.

you've never had a chicken fried steak?!?!?!?!? whaaaaaaaaaaa!?

if we were in Washington i'd tell you to go to the country cousin, home of the best cfs ever!

as for our city... i almost can't think about it because i get too annoyed. cosmo's story was tops though.

Anonymous said...

Wrong, Liv. The best chicken fried steak ever is at the Broken Spoke, Austin, TX. I believe the best cfs in the Sacramento region is at Original Perry's off 99 near Mack Road.

I second Original Perry's for CFS.

The dumpster divers/recycle bin snaggers have been targeting bills and mail lately here in East Sac. Though, yeah, we should all shred anything critical, one never knows what slips thru the cracks. Maybe that explains the rationale behind the ban...then again, I like bands with bass players and harmonies, so what do I know?

beckler said...

I don't understand that last sentence, anonymous commenter, please explain and pick some sort of screen name.

you can get a retarded helping with gross white gravy at Claim Jumper, and as a side, a "giant buttermilk biscuit" bigger than my small oriental fist and a massive portion of mashed potatoes, which rivals the biscuit's size and shape.

In this town, I'd say just make your own steak chicken fried. You know, with panko. That's what everybody's using. It's the foodiest...then again, I like cucumbers better pickled, so what do I know?

I'll try to break this to you gently anonymous - people who are going through dumpsters to steal mail & bills for identity fraud probably aren't gonna stop because dumpster diving is illegal.

I seem to recall Uptown having a decent chicken fried steak - though I swore off of them years ago. Where's Mike R Mike when you need him??

While I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the food stuff on yer blog, I find myself more and more out of sync w/the whole midtown ethos...nottheleastofwhich is local music scene in its current form (I miss the glory days of Magnolia/Chrome Addicts/Cake/Decibels/KaiKln and REALLY DON'T GET the new mikrobands with their sequencers and the poo-flinging costumed adventurers like MOM being shoved down our throat as real music..we get laughed at in thriving places like SF for our crappy musicscene).....it's just the easiest thing for this cranky early 30-something to crystalize in blog comment form. I know-kind of a non-sequitir...but, it's how I write.

...at least we have a law to go after these guys now. Besides, there's plenty of free food in town if you know who to ask/where to look.

Speechless. I'm heading to Uptown for Chicken Fried Steak! Psyche, I'm still at work.

Make your own with Sandra "MILF Cooking" Lee's recipe. Mitch Cardwell named it the best CFS he's had, after a nationwide search.

Would Sandra "MILF Cooking" Lee's recipe be found in a book or on a blog?

Probably my biggest personal concern (next to locating a vegan chicken fried steak) is whether or not people in San Francisco are laughing at us.

Yeah, if Kai Kln was still around I bet they'd stop right now.

people in san francisco are laughing at us? for real?

on the poo flinging costumed adventures tip check out me 'n skpr's new band. it's called "my small oriental fist." we'll be opening for Mom any day now.

I've found the best CFS is at Eggies on Fulton ( steak as big as your head and great buscuits and gravy!) or The Wagontrain, Chuckwagon, Wagon something on Florin across from the mall. I can't remember the name of the place on Florin, I've forgotten it every single time I've tried to remember for the past 7 years, 7 years! the name will not stay in my head! Anyhow they have the greatest CFS in town and the nicest service and customers anywhere. Uptown has good steak but wierd gravy, it's lumpy and grey, and hey it ain't called greyvy, he, he.

Stagecoach! I love Stagecoach. I will pop my CFSC (you know that that stands for) at Stagecoach soon. Stay tuned.

I think MOM fronting Kai Kln, throwing out chicken fried steak at people, would be something everyone could get behind. Eat your heart out, City by the Bay.

CFS is best served non-fancy. Chili's makes it pretty good. I nevered died eating it at Pancake Circus either. I used to always get it and comment on how it doesn't taste like chicken.

Stagecoach does make a pretty good CFS. I had one just last Sunday at the Elk Grove location with the GF's family. Original Perry's does make a CFS, but I'm never tempted to order it because of the Iowa Style Pork, which is basically the pork chop version of CFS.

The best CFS at any chain of family diners is most certainly Black Bear Diner. With locations in Gridley, Willows, and Suisun City, it's not too far to make a special trip. Their CFS which is called "The Bigfoot" is as good as Stagecoach's at least.

The best CFS'es I've had out west are at Café 101 in Hollywood (where it was the Monday night special for years) and at the Hungry Tiger in Portland. I'm not sure if the Hungry Tiger still makes the best CFS now that they moved from their historic location at E. Burnside and 28th, but the one I had there was absolutely outstanding...epic, yet heavenly, too! Incomparable quality/quantity quotient.

well you're not alone in not enjoying MOM, Anonymous Jeff. She certainly isn't for everyone and I'm not really into her performances. But also, I don't really consider her real music, but rather performance art. That being said, I'd hope that you don't completely give up on the Sac music scene. I've been here less then a year, but I've seen some really great stuff and I've really been digging the shows at Luigi's.

Chicken fried Steak is a cheap piece of top round, pierced or cubed somehow to make it tender, then it's floured (maybe breaded too) and fried. It's simple and that's that. It's nothing more than a beef schnitzel created by German immigrants in Texas because there was no market for veal. duh...

I don't know about their CFS, but Black Bear makes some of the best diner food on the planet. I ate at the one in Reno a couple of weeks ago and their biscuits were like massive clouds from heaven. The gravy served with them was also excellent.

My wife yells at me when I dumpster dive.Well that was until she threw some of the shit up on Japan Yahoo and made 6,000 yen.Now she encourages it.The stuff I found were English Books and they were gettin` rained on and with the big English Book Importer out of business I yelled "Mottennai" or "what a waste!!".Last month, I found a cool comic about the Yamaguchi clan!
Also Nagoya is Famous for the kinda like Chicken Fried Steak. It`s called Kuro Miso Katsudon.Fried Pork w/Black Miso Sauce!!It`s not like the usual miso but more thick and a tad sweet tasting.
I`m moving back to land of fire and becoming an organic farmer.I`m soo tired of cities.

Yeah, there's no goofy bands here in SF whatsoever. Personal & the Pizzas and Hamboogers are consummate professionals. We're really excited that we have absolutely no house party scene, either. LONG LIVE THE OKRA PICKLES!
