Sun and Meh

I am not sure how I feel about Sun and Soil, but I've been there three times lately. This last time I got the "dirty chai" and it was gross and did indeed taste like dirt. For nine bucks! I don't really think the drinks are great but I keep ending up there when I want to meet a friend and don't want to go for alcohol or coffee. Or yesterday because it was a good length of walk and I wanted something a little sweet. I always end up going for the smoothies because getting a juice for nine bucks doesn't seem worth it. Now that I'm writing this up I should probably stop going there. I usually end up drinking the smoothie really fast and not paying attention to it because I'm yapping about something.

I'm bummed about the changes coming up at The Bee. I'm bummed that papers are on their way out. Chalk it up as another thing the internet has ruined. Who is going to report on local news? Certainly not TV. We have the SNR, but that never seems totally solid either as far as revenue. We need an established local paper and we need an alternative newsweekly. They both serve their roles and our local society can't really function without them

I kinda love Sun & Soil. They're just about the only place that does a veggie juice that isn't sweet. Even the Co Op's veggie drinks are too sweet.

That news about the Bee is just awful. I know a lot of people get their news from NPR or online sources, but you're absolutely right that a community isn't a whole one without a decent local paper or alt weekly.

The SNR article has people claiming they can get their news online, and sure, that's true of the front page which is more national news, but not the local stuff. I still miss the original Sac Press for that reason. Plus, it's nice to sit there & read it and not be fucking online 24-7!

Daily and alt-weekly journalism can no longer sustain on traditional revenue models. Just like we give to nonprofits and groups during events such as Day of Giving, organizations and philanthropists are going to have to fund journalism if they want to continue having news about their cities and regions.

When I first started 11 years ago at SN&R, we had an editor, News Editor, Arts Editor, Copy Editor, Assistant Editor, Associate Arts Editor, Calendar Editor, Editor at Large, Proofreder and three staff writers. That's 12 full-time employees.

Today, we have six full-time employees.

I'm hoping the paper is at least half as good as it was 11 years ago.

Here's a great New Yorker piece from last month on the future of alt journalism: http://www.newyorker.com/business/currency/san-francisco-another-alt-weekly-goes

PS, fucking Sun & Soil haters! Pressed juice isn't cheap to produce. More ingredients in there than a $9 salad.

Talk to the hand, Nick.
The hand that saved $6.50 to run his own fruit and veggies through a masticator to create a better tasting juice served in my own glass bottle that I can wash myself.

Dirt Chai, are we sure there isn't dirt in it?

The glass bottle is classy as fuck. I just immersion blender up some kale, chard, fruit, ice and whatever else is around and drink it over the sink before work.

Is is in a glass jar though, we used to keep change in it.

lol smiller.lol

You new Captcha asked me to identify pictures of sandwiches the other day,
best ever.

I miss unscrambling those captcha anagrams. It's weird that so many of them were on the spectrum of rather pervy to borderline obscene. Certainly, it couldn't have been by accident.
