I am a girlfriend

No Bunny is playing with The Pizzas at Luigis on Wednesday. I really wish MOM could be on that show. Can she be a guest performer with The Pizzas maybe? She could sing background vocals to Jet or something.
Did you guys know that Mike C. is the best DJ around? If you need things dj'ed, call that guy.

Thanks for the thinspiration for the Lazy Sunday Dinner, Undercover Caterer. I used basil and my only innovation was to add a bit of flour to the sauce before the clams went in. Those farmer's market clams are super good. Five bucks a pound.

Nobunny may play at Funcastle instead - it's all confused & I can't get a solid answer from Justin. Hopefully today.

A co-worker of mine told me that he buys a big bag of clams (or maybe oysters -- I got to ask him again) at an Asian market then grills them on the BBQ. He eats them with salsa and other toppings, and like most grilled food they apparently go great with beer. I've been wanting to try this, but everybody gives me the gross face when I mention it.

i hear mom is banned from the fungarden for throwing sardines ...

Perhaps it would be more resource efficient to bundle the Save the Taco Truck Movement with the Lift the MOM ban movement. MOM+tacos makes a lot of sense to me.

Why didn't she throw anchovies?

I've seen MOMs taco with and without a merkin. It didn't make me think of anchovies.

The clam guy sells oysters too, singles and clusters and also mussels. All are bueno.

I've never seen MOM, with or w/out merkin, I'm too scared.

Yeah, I third the recommendation for the clam/oyster/mussel guy at the market! Shellfish Sundays are the best!!!

However, not to be a party pooper, but isn't this NOT shellfish season? I just got back from a vacation on the Tomales Bay and there were signs everywhere warning of an official ban on the sale of mussels, and an official warning on clams (it said to discard the "dark parts" to avoid being poisoned). And neither were on the menu anywhere. There were oysters, but only BBQ'd or fried. I got an oyster po-boy at Nick's Cove and the oysters weren't great tasting. I'm not sure how I feel about fried oysters though -- I've had them at Antoine's in New Orleans, and even there I wasn't crazy about them.

However, I have crazy fond memories of eating BBQ'd oysters in Bellingham in the summer, but haven't done it since.

Anyway, I've been wondering if dude at the market is still selling mussels? I don't really know the reasons behind the "no shellfish in months without r's" dictum, I always it had something to do with the warmer waters. Any thoughts?

You're right. When the waters get warmer, oysters get ready to reproduce and don't produce as much sugar and fat (maybe because they're not in hibernation?) and subsequently don't taste as good. There was a pretty interesting article in the SF Weekly about oysters, the different breeds, and what the outlook for them is in the future considering global warming, etc. a few months ago:

I don't know about other shellfish though. It seems like clams and mussels are always on the menu...

Nobunny didn't want to play Luigi's after I set it up. He most likely will be playing at the Funcastle with Made in Mexico.

The show at Luigi's is Dark Lingo, Baby!, the Enlows & the Pizzas. All three local acts are sharing gear and playing short sets.

Anyone wants to help me out, could do there best to get the word out that nobunny is not playing luigi's.

Yeah, I was a little worried about the clams, but they were great. They may not be local? I probably wouldn't eat oysters right now, but the Mexican restaurant style of giant oysters all year round appeal to some, and I'm sure they're not dangerous. Those must all be imported, too.

MH,

I had the oyster po boy at Manny's Fresh in Stockton and it was damn good. I've had several greasy and sort of yucky po boys over the years, but this one was the best.

these days most oysters clams and mussels we see are U.S farmed, and, in these cases it's a good thing. While farmed salmon is awful in at least three ways, the shellfish farms are supposed to be well-managed and environmentally responsible. Farmed oysters are year-round and A-OK. All this according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. U.S. farmed clams, mussels and oysters account for 95% of what is available and get a "Best Choice" rating.

I see. So they're all safe year round, but oysters are still tastiest when the water is cold-or at least smaller and not filled with jizzy stuff. Clams seem good all year round. I don't eat mussels that often.

Yeah, I haven't had enough to really compare the quality of these to wild. I know the best mussels I've ever had were wild from Tomales Bay. I'm just glad to know someone is doing responsible aquaculture since you hear so many bad things about it, though according the Seafood Watch, shellfish lend themselves to aquaculture better than some other species, particularly salmon. I'm totally freaked about imported shrimp now, after reading about it. Nasty.

yeah, I remember reading about shrimp farms years ago. how they find a strip of shore, start a farm, fuck it up and make it disgusting and uninhabitable, and then move down the shore and do it all over again. that's why shrimp are so cheap.

and they live in their own shit and a spicy blend of chemicals
