35! Still alive!

Hmmm...the No Bunny show was pretty underwhelming. I was really excited but the guitar was way too loud and you couldn't hear the vocals and they only played like five songs. I wish he would have played at Luigis. I wish I would have stayed home and watched Mad Men! My new obsession. I've only watched the first three episodes but I love it. It's like The Wire if The Wire was good. Ha! Now I've really started something. Remember, it's my birthday soon, so don't be mean.

I will have the next four days off because of my birthday. Today is the traditional lunch at Whitey's with coworkers. Peach shake! Peach shake!

It is like the Wire, in that both started out as shows that nobody watched and now there's a major cachet in saying that you're a fan. The first season of Mad Men really is the best, although you don't know whether to hate Don or feel sorry for him.

I watched much of the first season of "Mad Men" just before Comcast took it off of On Demand, largely for the incredibly awesome set design and costumes, but it is pretty swell. Sacramento transplant and swell gal Amber Kloss has been an extra on "Mad Men" but I haven't watched it recently to look for her in background shots.

Mad Men is good, very very good, but the Wire -- oh my -- the series ever seen on television beats all the greats -- Sopranos, Deadwood, Monty Python/Masterpiece Theatre/Benny Hill, the original Mash, Welcome Back Kotter, Gilligan's Island, Dallas, etc.

Maybe you just don't get it cuz you're still really young

Thanks for calling me young!

I've never felt so out of touch with my fellow man as I did when I attempted to get in to The Wire.

I've only seen a couple episodes of Mad Men, but felt like I was being beaten over the head with the social commentary. Look how everyone smoked back then! And drank! And look how women were treated!! Now do it again!
I don't object to the content, just the heavy-handed delivery. Subtext too loud.

Apparently the writers are big fans of Cheever, Yates, Updike. I'd rather read them than watch this.

I like the Wire.

I heard about Amber Kloss on Mad Men. That's so cool!

Well, I've only seen three episodes. I'm almost ready to try to watch the Wire again. Now everyone at my work is watching it and talking about it.

I acknowledge, though, that I haven't given Mad Men enough chance to see how good the storytelling really is.

watching the Wire is worth it just to get to the final season, on the media.

Can I just interject that there is no need to watch either of these shows now that Season 5 of Entourage is available on Netflix.

I love Mad Men, but have only seen the first season. Last I checked, I couldn't get Seasons 2 or 3 on Netflix.

I like the Wire, but am not a diehard. I've only seen seasons 1-3 and after I watched them (all in a row) I felt like only talking in drug slang.

However, when I was in DC, I heard a kid from the Wire talk about playing a homeless kid (I was at a Senate reception for homeless youth) and because he got so into the role, he's now an advocate for homeless youth. I thought that was really cool.

We're still trying to catch up with Season 4 of CSI Miami.

Gilligan's Island is one of the greats? Really?

Kotter I can see, but Gilligan?
And who can forget Cannon?

I tried watching The Wire from the first season, and it already seemed dated even though it's not very old. I'm sure it gets better as it goes though.

fuck ya'll and your high-brow tv. It's all about the A-Team. Face is the man!

"I've never felt so out of touch with my fellow man as I did when I attempted to get in to The Wire."

Replace 'The Wire' with 'anything after 1908' and you're describing my life. Wait, i'm into the Spanish Civil War, so there's that.

off the subject of television, but I just had a really fantastic snocone from the new snocone cart at L & 7th. He uses real fruit and makes his own syrup. Delish! I'd recommend it to anyone working downtown.

I'm getting rid of almost all of the stuff at my place if anyone is interested. Couch, tables, shelves, kitchen stuff, music stuff (cords, drums), CDs, blah blah blah. I'm still really busy doing about 80 things at once but call or email to arrange a walk through if you want anything. Some stuff has been spoken for, but there's still lots of neat stuff. If the stuff people have said they want is still here on Monday, it can go to anyone. In a week it all goes to thrift stores.

I gave up watching teevee after they canceled BJ and the Bear.

Sincerely,

Your Local Korean High School Teacher

Yay! Peach shake. By the way, channel 3 was there filming and I told him it was my birthday and they came by and filmed me eating a hamburger with my coworkers. So tune in to see my big fat face sometime between 5 and 7 pm tonight! Everyone sang happy birthday to me on film.

The second season of "Mad Men" came out on DVD earlier this month. The third season starts on Aug. 16 on AMC. For you non-cablers, just download it illegaly starting a few hours later.
It rules. I want to travel back in time to its fictional universe and marry the character of Rachel Menken more than just about, well, anything else.
Yes, I love "The Wire" as well.

I second Madewell's praise for the sno-cones at 7th & L. I just had the tamarind, which comes with some funky-looking, but very tasty chunks of soft tamarind.

Caveat: they're suuuuuuper sweet, so ask him to go light on the juice or walk in the sun for a bit and let the cone water down a bit.

1) happy birthday!
2) I like Mad Men, but usually I'm just drooling over the sets and costumes and then forget what the episode was actually about.
3) The Wire is awesome, and I like to watch reruns sometimes just to hear the accents.
4) Thanks for the sno-cone tip. Invaluable.

It's several hundred CDs (mostly in packages) from when I worked at a music distro.

It's a floor tom and beat up snare that Charles the Douche left behind.

Today (Friday), I pack stuff. Whatever isn't in my room is for sale or gets given away tomorrow. Everything down to the ramen goes.

Happy Birthday Beckler (it's officially tomorrow though, right?)!!!

You've gotta try watching The Wire again. Maybe start at Season 3 - that's where I got sucked in.

Love,

Sorry, OMF. I traded the battery charger for a bottle of Romulan Ale and a Pedro the Lion CD.

the thing with the wire is that it takes a bit to get into...the first few eps i was thinking its ok and by the end of the 1st season i was pretty floored..by the end of the 2nd season you realize the amazing scope of the show and by the end of season 3...holy fuck. yeah its the best show ever

Unknown said...

I totally recognize that I am a little overly committed in my adoration for the Wire, but pretty please do consider giving the show one more chance...not sure how many episodes you watched initially but just because the first season didn't float your boat doesn't mean the others won't. Each season has a different central theme employing the same cast of characters (the plight of urban public schools, the death of blue collar dock jobs and organized labor's ill fated attempt to save them, the demise of the integrity of the Baltimore Sun [my dad was a reporter for the Sun in the late 50' so that season held a special place in my heart...PLUS, I've never witnessed such --not even thinly veiled -- more like see through mesh draped-- rage and disdain on Television...man oh man is David Simon still pissed at his editors!!!)
