do you like to do things?

Fool's Foundation is providing a whole weekend's worth of infoedutainment in the next couple of days. Tonight Shiny Objects is screening a movie about Tokyo punk. I'm there! 7 o clock five bucks. Tomorrow is Liv Moe's opening (that sounds dirty). Starts at seven, right? Sunday is the antique faire and there you go. Weekend over.

Oooofff - That "Rock N Tokyo" movie is a bust. It is terrible on so many levels. The filmmaker seemed like she just wanted an excuse to be hanging out with the bands (Guitar Wolf, 5678s, and Jet Boys) and conveniently forgot that a 'documentary' still needs a story. The worst is when Billy from Guitar Wolf dies and she just sort of throws that in and then there is more footage of GW with Billy playing. It is very confusing. Then she has the nerve to dedicate the film to him afterward - he deserves better!!

No wait, I'm mistaken, the worst part is the footage of this crappy, Dave Matthews-esqe band Nine, which seems to go on for like 30 minutes. I think that's when I nearly lost it. Worst band in Tokyo.

Thumbs down!! Especially getting an idea of what the punk and rock scenes are like in Tokyo - there is so much there that she didn't even bother to find out about.

This movie will make you tired and angry. It totally killed by Anchor Bock buzz!!!

On a lighter note, if you missed Bozo Texino I have a copy that you can borrow. That movie rules!!!

Oh yeah, since I have a job now I'm allowed to get bloggy.

Cory from Absolutely Kosher wrote a formal letter that was passed around a ways back slamming that Pitchfork writer:

... On Thursday, November 16, Pitchforkmedia.com published a review written by Adam Moerder of the new album by + / - {Plus/Minus}, Let's Build A Fire, on Absolutely Kosher. As it turns out, Moerder reviewed an earlier Taiwanese version of the album that came out last year, rushed for release there in order to be available for the band's 2005 tour of Asia. When we brought this to Pitchfork's attention, they first modified the review to reflect the fact it was an import and then, correctly deciding that this was a cop out, pulled the review entirely an hour later and reassigned it to another writer. This was mildly embarrassing for Pitchfork (they took responsibility for not fact-checking), but the real initial embarrassment needs to be owned by Adam Moerder, the writer of the original review (and a perpetrator of falsehoods in past reviews). In spite of receiving the proper version that we released in late October, Moerder reviewed what has to be an illegally downloaded Taiwonese version. Our version had several tracks swapped out or renamed (including some of the ones indicted by Moerder) and the entire record was remixed and, for the first time, properly mastered. It's bad enough that Moerder's review is mean-spirited and off-the-mark, but he reviewed the wrong record. We're obviously happier with the new review, though I contend that we'd have gotten a higher score from it if the first one hadn't been published. I suspect their will be no long-term repercussions for Adam Moerder for his asinine smear of a record the band took an extra year to finish properly for U.S. release...

What's this about some punk band playing at the hilltop friday night? I am curious to check out the Hilltop as a venue.

Anyone know anything? My source may have been stoned.

That the Hilltop at 48th and Folsom? It's owned by Jack and Donna Nolan; I used to work with Donna at Tower Advertising years ago, and I don't think she's the type to book punk acts into her bar. Although one never knows these days. Anyway, the Hilltop is, or has been in recent years, somewhat of a Clamper bar, as in E Clampus Vitus. (Dunno if the neon "ECV" is still in the window facing Folsom, though.) And Clampers tend not to be punkers, although I do know one guy who's a punk-rock Clamper, but I don't think he spends much time at the Hilltop.

I was there a few weeks ago & it was super dead - maybe they should start having shows. I can't really see that neighborhood being that stoked about that though. I think the clamper sign is gone with the new-ish owners.

The Shitkickers are playing with a band from Seattle. Not sure of the Seattle band's name. I heard it's invite only, which makes zero sense.

You can email Murray Bowles to get on the list. You'd have to find me or Shawn on myspace to find Murray's page. Or google Murray Bowles and hope you find his email.

They're playing with Pelusa. Shitkickers are country punk.

MD: As the SO site says: "But really, this film is all about the incredible live performances."

Yeah, I agree - Nine could have been purged.

It's less of a "doc" and more of an attempt to showcase 5678s, Guitar Wolf and Jet Boys. It may be far from great filmmaking (and there is a little jutteriness in parts due to a possibly less than adept NTSC conversion), but there is some pretty neat live footage (again, - Nine ain't my thing either, but at least they're covered the least by far).

Lurch: Sure that's fine. Then edit out that other crap, just show the live stuff, and don't call it a documentary.

And there is no excuse for Nine to be covered at all.

If you liked it, that's fine. It's not the worst movie I've seen; I just wanted to warn Heckasac about what this 'film' is really all about.

It's referred to that as it falls within that classification. It's certainly not a narrative.

"bowles is such a posh last name. is he posh?"

Murray Bowles is a cellist for the San Jose Symphony--does that qualify as posh? He's also the famous MRR photographer from the 80s...That's posh!
