Wow, I leave town for a weekend and all hell breaks loose! Was anyone out that night at Second Saturday? Was it scary? It seems like the city council is planning a somewhat measured response, which is good. It's so horrible that someone got shot, especially someone who was not really involved in the altercation.
Totally different subject: The Sandwitches and Touchez are playing at The Hub on Thursday. Good show! A funny quote about The Sanwitches is "if the shaggs were hot"
Our trip to souther Cali was fun. We ate at Pizzeria Mozza. The pizza does live up to the hype. We ate the pizza from the cover of Saveur. The crust is so airy, so light. The sauce is so fragrant. Uh mazing.
Then we ate the dumplings of my dreams, the pork fried from Luscious Dumplings. One of the many highlights of the trip was a sojourn to Burger Records. This is my favorite record store ever. I love power pop and bubblegum so it's perfect for me. They are so nice there and it's such a treat to see a whole store filled with records that I've never seen anywhere else; each with a story behind it that the kind employees are happy to share with you.
It was actually pretty overwhelming.
Here's Sean, one of the owners. He's also in Thee Makeout Party. He's the guy who sings "birthday suit", which is a hilarious sight.
Burger Records is putting out the new Twilley record! They said it's really good.
This is a picture from the back of Chevy Chase's 60s psychedelic record! It was kinda baroque, like Left Banke. It was good.
super rare record from Sean's private collection. Not for sale.
The Burger cat. I highly recommend a visit to this store, and The Bruery is five minutes away and has a rad tasting room.

Keep Midtown Shanky
Burger was so insane! I just told Sean "I like records that sound like this & this" & he spent the next hour handing me shit to listen to. I stood at the turntable & the record store came to me! Also, so many records I'd never seen, it was like record shopping in a parallel universe. I got home last night with a huge stack of shit & had to patiently wait as Becky listened to her damn Lightfoot record first!

the divorced dad music had to come first.
I'm shocked you didn't write about how much you loved that catfish in sheeps pee over at Jitlada.

Catfish in sheep's pee? My interest is piqued.

it probably wasn't really pee. but it couldn't have smelled more like pee if it was pee. delicious pee.
however, they have a toasted coconut/lemongrass/other stuff salad that i want to eat every day forever. and the green curry was divine. the food wasn't really spicy enough this time, especially for a restaurant where you practically have to sign a legal release because it's supposed to be so spicy. i barely got sting ring.
This soup smelled more like the livestock area of the state fair than the livestock area of the state fair.

"Sting ring", never heard that before. Nice.

md's band "special ed" had a song called "sting ring", which was the first i'd heard of it. here's a link to the song:

Chase played drums for a time with the college band The Leather Canary, headed by school friends Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. At the time, Chase called the group "a bad jazz band", but Becker and Fagen became successful later, after changing their band's name to Steely Dan. Chase is gifted with absolute pitch.[2] He played drums and keyboards for a rock band called Chamaeleon Church, which recorded one album for MGM Records before disbanding in 1969.
It made Insight with one mention of World Class City: http://bit.ly/93SApx

thanks. interesting
Jumping on a slightly old post here, but I had to chime in with my love for those Burger Records guys. These are probably the nicest dudes I have ever met in LA, and they put out some of the best bands happening in the current Bubblegum/Powerpop vein. Glad to see you writing about them. Hope everyone goes to check out there store when they cruise through LA. Had no idea they were putting out a Twilley record, Insane! I hear that dude can barely form a sentence, but still rips come performance time.
