I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but what more proof do you need that Republicans are the crappier, more evil party than that they consistently try to keep people from voting? E.G., opposing same-day voter registration and many other examples.
Breton, you have got to be kidding. "What matters is the will of a community" to build an arena? There is no will! Talk to the common man in Sac: there is no will. There is no desire. There is no money.
Did you guys read Cosmo's excellent piece on parking privatization? Hopefully this will be the next harebrained scheme to fall by the wayside.

I'm pretty sure the parking-arena scheme is toast.

Breton was joking, you're just too pessimistic to get it. The will of the community can absolutely be assessed at a fundraising breakfast for developers and CEOs.

Breton, You Must Be Joking sounds like it would be a great Smiths song.
'Breton, I'd like to Kick You Through a Plate Glass Window' is my favorite song lately.
He is absolutely the worst professional writer currently being published in this city, and he singlehandedly lowers the quality of print journalism in the region by several points. it takes a lot to make me angry, but Breton does it nearly every time he opens his mouth.

The utter obsession with thinking and doing something BIG is such a nasty case of reaction formation.
The Maloofs told Sacramento, "Build a new arena -- or you pipsqueaks are going to end up in our rear view." The NBA cooled the rhetoric, but essentially said the same thing.
This leaves community leaders with a pretty strong, if ugly, argument to put to the community: If we don't build it, they will leave.
Yet nobody makes this argument. Instead, we're told that it is not about the Kings, the Maloofs or the NBA; it's really about a community spontaneously coming together to accomplish something monumental.
In other words, nobody is threatening to castrate us; we're behaving slavishly to the interests of the Maloofs and the NBA because our dicks are BIG, and we can do BIG things with them.
(I exaggerated the Freudian angle for humorous effect, but I hope you get my point that is about saving ego).

Defenestration would be a good name for a metal band.

Didn't Belle and Sebastian cover "Breton, You Must Be Joking" as a b-side?

On second thought, I might be mixing that up with the B&S song "Voisin, You Look You Slept in the Clothes You're Wearing".
What are you talking about people, everything is BIG now!!! And we're all part of the "creative class!" Everyone on this thread. All of us! It's EXCITING. Even the concert in the park in no longer the concert in the park. Instead a consortium of the "creative class" have come together to organize Play Big Sacramento! SO BIG!
I think we can all agree that the one thing that has long held Sacramento back is a lack of BIG thinking and buzz words.
Sigh....
Is there some sort of gag order on the Midmo thing? Why is nobody talking about it? Or is it being talked about somewhere else?
What gives, people!
What MidMo thing? The music conference?

We're all free to be as creative as we want in this city, as long as it's underground and no one gets paid for it. That's my take home message this week and I'm pretty depressed about it.
"We're all free to be as creative as we want in this city, as long as it's underground and no one gets paid for it."
I don't get it; bring me up to speed?
I personally have a track record of going into the red on any event/show I put on. Probably because I just don't care. Guys like Jerry and Rick, however, I wish they could get a good home base for their shows and more cheddar for their efforts. I feel like the'd have to do like 5 times more work (flier, network media/online, handbill, all that promo routine shit) just to break even, and that's not worth it over the years/decades ...
