There are food nerd activities abounding lately, mostly in Davis. The Mondavi Food and Wine Institute is going to be a real boon to food nerdery. It makes me want to go back to school, but I'll have to settle for the free events, like this weekends academic conference: Tasting Histories: food and drink culture throughout the ages. Most of this is free to the public, there's a link at the bottom of the page to register.
Here's another event. It's tonight during Lost, unfortunately. Do you know of any other food events?
Oh yeah, another one is that Richard at Taylor's is hosting a wine tasting on sunday, I believe it's from 2-5. It's the guy from Kermit Lynch, ten bucks, snacks included.

ok, I lied, that link is not on the bottom of the page. You're gonna have to find it on your own, cuz I can't seem to.
I looked and it seems like registration is closed.

I think that's just for submitting papers.
Food nerd news:
Pepsi and Mt. Dew are releasing "throwbacks" of their sodas which use real sugar instead of HFCS.

Hey Ella,
Have you tried this Mex-Korean taco truck?
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/25/dining/25taco.html?em
Man, that sounds good. It's almost worth a trip to Santa Monica to try it. Maybe when I get off my ass and do my trip to Sambos in Santa Barbara I can try to find this truck too.
Hat nerdery!
Verification word: "lonbrapo"
WKRP receptionist ate a bunch of taco bell.

Dave, nope, but I'm interested. I saw that Sambo's last time I was in Santa Barbara. Couldn't believe it!
It's on the darned beach even. It was PACKED.
I used to love sambos. I'm pretty sure I had the racist children's book in which the little boy turns into a pat of butter? Or the tiger does?
The boy tricks the tigers into becoming butter. It's Indian in origin. The story in itself isn't racist, but the boy is black and the name "Sambo" is a racial slur.
I didn't know there were and Sambo's restaurants around any more, they were all over the Southwest when i was a kid. Are there any Po' folks restaurants left? I loved that place. Ice tea in a jar!

What is the deal with Lost?
Basically there was this plane that crashed & then....never mind.
-miller
so it's like Gilligan's Island, only with a plane instead of a boat?
-omf
I think you just accidentally figured out the secret of Lost.
Claire - Mary Ann
Kate - Ginger
Jack - Skipper
Locke - Professor
Sawyer - Gilligan
Bernard & Rose - Mr & Mrs Howell
-miller
Sawyer has made Gilligan Island references before.
wasn't there a chimp? sawyer is closer to a chimp than gilligan. i think charly would clearly be gilligan. too bad charly is "dead"
Sawyer = Foster

I used to go to the Po' Folks in the Florin Mall parking lot (at least I think that's where it was) with my Dad and great grandma. Drinking lemonade out of a jar was such a kick.
If LOST = Gilliagan's Island, cleary Sayid is the Professor, because he could probaby make a radio out of a coconut (and in turn the professor could probably kill a man with his feet.) Also, the Harlem Globtrotters are the Dharma Initiative and Russians are the Hostiles.
I don't watch Lost but if they introduce the Honeybees, someone let me know! I had to find that on youtube.

I remember the Nip Drivers did a great cover of that song.
