The Box Elders are a fun Nebraskan band that is kinda Red Kross-y. They wear silly outfits such as vests, headbands and tie dye. I really enjoyed them when I saw them at the Witch Dome (RIP). They describe themselves as "cave pop". That's apt.
We all know that all the Sacramento blog action is going to be going on at Orange Peel Mouth but I will not write any spoilers in case MH has not watched it yet. So go over there!

Orange Peel Mouth discussion is now up. Enjoy.

i'll be at the box elders and makeout party. i'd like to actually see the mayyors, but i don't feel like jostling with hip kids to get a glipse. i'm never quite comfortable at that funcastle.
Haha...Hey, Anon.! Are you the same person that had this conversation with me?
"Why do the Mayyors only play house-shows here in town, but real shows everywhere else?"
You don't remember...they played the Delta of Venus once.
"Whatever! That's still more like a house than a café."
Sure, I know some people still don't feel welcome at house-shows if they don't know the house tenants. But if you haven't noticed on Undietacos yet, the Mayyors are gonna be playing at the 300 Room next month with Eat Skull.
As for Friday, yeah...I'm bummed I hafta miss my favorite band, and then their next three shows since I'll be too busy again to go to SXSW. But I'm happy to see the Box Elders back. I think they're as fun as both Tyvek and NoBunny, so if you like that kinda party, then c'mon out tomorrow night!
Can't forget my favorite part of that conversation...
"Haven't you discussed this with [the Mayyors]?"
Hey, I'm not the band's mouthpiece...They're all nice guys; why don't you ask them yourself?
"HOW WOULD I DO THAT? THEY DON'T HAVE A MYSPACE!!!"
House shows are always fun, even if you don't know anybody. Do people expect someone to come over and say "hi, I'm so-and-so, and this is my house. Would you like a tour?".
One time a few years ago I went to one of my first Witchdome shows. I made the mistake of going too early and as I was going towards the back someone who lived there at the time greeted me by saying "I fcking hate you!!!!"
It got better over time (whew!), but I can see why people get a little antsy about house shows....
-----Whause
i don't like going to house shows because i'm small and not really into getting jostled around by an overstuffed room. there were days when all i wanted was crowded, sweaty house shows in my life. but not anymore. and there is no reason for me to expect or wish for their to be less basement shows, just 'cos i'm an old fuddy dud.
exactly what caroline said! these people at funcastle and the witchdome smell kind of funky sometimes a bit too much. and sometimes what whause said too! i don't expect them to say "hi, want a beer?" but i do get too much of a cliquey feeling about them, and that makes me feel unwelcome. and i'm the same age as most of them. i you want to see the Mayyors, is there any other choice? i can't get into a bar in sf.
They're playing March 27th at Capitol Bowl. Be warned though, there may be some people there that know each other.
-miller
capitol bowl is 21 and over, anyways. you will have to brave the b.o. and stinkeye and go to the funcastle. or you could just watch them on youtube.
rick said i can get in, though...right? ;)
i think that underage people trying to sneak into the capitol bowl and ruin it for everyone is the equivalent of a smelly hippy at the witchdome not smiling at you at a house show.
p.s. I guess I'm being a dick? If I knew how to do one of those polls on the side you guys could vote on whether I'm being a dick.
If you say you're the bass player for Dogwood Bark they'll let you in to the bar.
-miller
i made the poll!
I don't know what this is all about, but I voted "absolutement!", anyway. That's just part of my new positive attitude where I say yes to everything.
Word verification: "bible". I shit you not: "bible". Blogger's hardcore fringe evangelical bias finally revealed!
hey anonypussy, please do not imply that i am making your arguments for you. the things i said above have nothing to do with anything you have mentioned here.
wow! and i thought sacto was friendlier than davis. so sorry i don't have a blogger ID.
Next poll: is Sac friendlier than Davis? Polls are really gonna bring this blog to the next level.
-miller
you don't need a blogger id to sign your name.
i am single handedly trying to keep davis meaner than sac.
this whole thing again? hey, some young people are opening up their home to a ton of complete strangers. they might be a little cautious, not to mentioned pre-occupied with the hassle of running a show. cut them some slack, and maybe try that weird adult thing of introducing yourself to people you haven't met before. believe it not its a good way to break the ice, make new friends, and make those cliquey uncomfortable house shows home-sweet-home.
i know a bunch of people coming up from SF to see this show tonight, they're not going to know anyone and don't care. i for one, am going to slap them fives and try and remember their names and faces. if you are feeling uncomfortable in your own skin, come say hi and i'll distract you with conversation and beer.
Mt.St.Meet-And-Greet
look, anonymous, does it make you feel better that the poll is showing that i'm being a dick?
Ack! Sorry Hecka, way to feed the anon troll. I'm gonna run around the block 35 times now so I'm EVEN STINKIER and this person has more reason to bum out.
---------WHAUSE (THAT SMELL?????)
I'm counting 5 good shows Friday night in Sacramento (incl. West Sac) which is a mighty blessing
Finding the stinkiest might be a challenge, but ultimately I think it's a good thing that aging hipsters have such a wide variety of sounds AND smells to absorb on a Friday night.
uhuh, no h-word on heckasac.
C'mon Anon. I'm literally twice as old as these _ipsters, I look like a Republican, and I teach grade school, and even I can do it. Put on a crazy hat and go for it. Get off the internet and engage. Make out with a stranger.
Jed
hahah..ok, you have me laughing now. maybe i'm the lamo after all. roommates say i'm an "old soul". my name is kristie. i figured why bother signing my name if no one else knows me? but i'll be around. mt. st. mtn., if you're in the mayyors, i hope to see you play somewhere where i can actually see...that's all. i'm not calling shenanigans on the mayyors. even tho i had to buy your first record on ebay for $16. your show at ucd with aids wolf was the best.
go see them tonight at the funcastle! it will be great, i'm sure.
and for the record, i'm not even comfortable at the dam haus either even tho rick is there and he's always nice to me. except when you stand in the front yard. ;) it's really nothing against funcastle. i just wish that shows weren't always at houses.
--kk
Wow, this just blew up! Don't worry...parent-age people just don't understand! I shoulda warned you about using the word "hip", Kristie!
Her main thing, really, is the sightlines in these craftsman bungalows when the bands play on one side of the arch and most of the people are on the other side. KK, I swear I saw you having fun at Fort Douglass and 802 Villanova. Ranch floorplan!
In Sacto, if a show was happening in such a house, it would be south of Sutterville Road, and no one would wanna go 'cos it's too far. Even though it's not!
sacre bleu! and kudos to KK for coming out! i love it when an anonymous poster ends up being cool.
even though a house full of strangers might seem daunting house shows are the bedrock that most good music scenes are built on. 9 times out of 10 when i've introduced myself to a stranger i've met with good results.
fyi, i voted sacre bleu on the poll mostly because i wasn't entirely sure what vote that would count for and it's fun to say.
sacre bleu!
