movie talk

This upcoming weekend is weekend two of the French Film Festival.  I attended two movies this last weekend, which is  indicative of the fact that there are hardly any good shows, or that I am now no longer following current music (or camping much).  Every year when the FFF happens I usually can't make it to any of the movies.  Oh well.  I like going to it.  It seems to be doing very well.

I saw House of Pleasures at the late night.  It's loooong, with no plot, and a ton of nudity, oh yeah, and a panther on a leash that acts like a kitty.  You'd think it would be perfect for me, but in the last 45 minutes or so it gets pretty darn stupid.  It's set in a fin d'siecle brothel in Paris.  Lots of good stuff but by the scene when all the girls are crying and slow dancing because one has died of syphillis and the strains of "nights in white satin" (I shit you not) are ringing out, it pretty much lost me.  Still fun.

The next evening I went to Hotel Du Nord, a classic, and they had a very old print and the sound was fucked.  More than the sound has been fucked in any movie I've ever seen.  There was constant crackling insterspersed with heavy WHOMP noises.  I heard that it was so back that the projectionists upstairs were turning the platters by hand.  The movie was not stopped and no announcements were made about what was going on.  I can't believe how many people stayed! I made it about 40 minutes and when it just got worse I tried to get one refund for my mom (I didn't ask for one) and we couldn't get one.  Amateur hour! I know it would have sucked to give people a refund but it was insane.  They should have just offered people passes to next week's festival.

I haven't heard a single rave about Moonlight Kingdom.  Even people who love him seem to not be able to find much good to say.

Really? I've heard a lot of good stuff about Moonlight Kingdom. Mostly through the comedy podcasts I can't seem to get enough of. I get the impression if you like Wes Anderson flicks, you'll like the movie.

I guess I don't have to HoP now that I know there's a panther and everyone dies in the end. WHOMP there it is!

The big surprise is that everybody dies, right?

Spoiler alert: everybody dies.

Looked at the Ebert review- HoP seems like the exact movie that Joe Average pictures when thinking 'French movie.' The FFF should show Amelie, Wages of Fear and Rififi each year just to make sure people know how fun French films can be.

Moonrise Kingdom was really great.

OMF just called Wages of Fear "fun." This explains a lot.

I still have nothing to add to this topic, but my current captcha-unscramble reveals '70 pornstar' by switching two letters.

I'm no film expert but I thought Moonrise Kingdom was sweet and weird. I liked it.

Hey Heckasac!
From time to time, I have an extra dozen eggs from my backyard chix. I'm gonna hit you up to take the next overage, okay? It should be in the next week or so.

Oh, and French Films are boring.

Hey heckasac!

Despite a goddamned 95 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I thought Moonrise Kingdom is one of the failed Wes Anderson joints. It certainly looks good and is occasionally clever, but the story is too goddamned precious and cute. A movie about two occasionally violent and emotionally disturbed kids who run away together should attempt to be a bit more than just cute.

Dump it!

Hey heckaeveryone,

If by chance any of you WesA fans have not gotten around to viewing The Fantastic Mr. Fox, perhaps due to it being animated, or due to a general dislike of George Clooney (both valid concerns), you should in fact see it - it's quite good. And it even has a Jarvis Cocker cameo.

Too goddamn precious and cute was why I turned off the Fantastic Mr Fox halfway through. Too much Wes Anderson, not enough Roald Dahl. I loved Bottle Rocket & Rushmore and feel like he would've been better staying in the vein of Southern/Texas storytelling instead of trying to recast himself as an East Coast preppy.

I fell asleep during the fantastic mr. fox. i don't like clooney and i don't like his goddamn voice.

my captcha is completely undoable. the picture part is just a blurry 7 followed by two triangles.
