obligatory new post

I don't feel like posting but I don't want that old post to be at the top anymore. Anyone got anything to say?

There is a boulevard park association garage sale tomorrow on 22nd between G and H. 9am - 1pm.
Also the Ancient Sons are playing second tonight in one of the weirdest lineups ever.

What's the deal with people on the street who walk at the EXACT same speed you're walking? You end up having to stop and do a phantom shoe-tie or power walk past them. Or you can just keep on walking right next to them and give them the "what's up, dude" nod. And what's worse, hipster kids flashing gang signs or devil horns? And why was Jay Biz performing to six people in a coffee shop more engaging and moving than the Mummies reunion gig the other night?

by the way, if you guys haven't read the dare daniel of stepmom over at the barnesyard, warm up the clicky finger and get your butt over there.

This is actually tangentially related to the last post, but for discussion's sake I'll put it here: did you see the Sacramento Vietnamese food writeup in the current Saveur? It mentioned Vinh Phat, Pho Bac Hoa Viet, and New Paris (which I actually think is now defunct--I was by there a month or so ago and there was a pay or quit notice on the locked door).

new paris still was gone last week.

I'm voting for devil horns.

that's cool. little saigon out on stockton is by far the most exciting thing going on in food in sac.

i get annoyed when folks play a pseudo-game of chicken with you when you confront them head. that old which us will step outta the way of the other one first. then you try not be the asshole and make your move but then they go for it at the same time and then the game of chicken starts over. perhaps i should just start running into people in those situations. as for the mummies... are you saying that the mummies reunited in the city a few nights ago? i hope omf doesn't get wind of this.

At the stork club? i found out too late to go.

Smiller didn't you mean to write, "Liv, Can I and I use..."

Don't forget to use the ringtone of "Pass the dutchie on the left hand side" no your album, mon.

Any viet food fans overwhelmed by the myriad types of 'banh' ( as I am) here's a cool guide, including pronunciation!

Banhguide.htm

well, a cool guide except for the fact that some of it is wrong. Banh ain't necessarily steamed. and the Beo in Banh Beo certainly doesn't rhyme with 'meow', it sounds more like 'mayo' (or, i guess, 'baio' like Scott)
and 'cuon' doesn't sound like 'kwon', more like 'coon'

Not that anyone cares; I'm just bored.

And I really want to get one of those Banh Khot makers.

I wish I could try the banh it. How do you pronounce the "xeo" in banh xeo?

Anonymous said...

banh xeo, that would be just like the banh beo, but with an 's' (the 'x' is pronounced like an 's', and 's' is pronounced like 'sh')
Actually, now that I think of it, I was a bit off too. It's not really like 'mayo' or in this case 'sayo'. It's not an 'a' sound, more like 'eh'
So, banh seh-oh would be close, but still ignores the tonal marks. If you really want to do it right, banh has to have a rising tone and xeo has a falling tone. (I think, I always forget. Remembering tones is like trying to remember genders in French, but a million times harder)

OMF -- I actually did think of calling you, but I found out at 11:47 that night. Plus, the time I called you all psyched about the Supercharger reunion you were all, "Pfft..whatevs..." It was pretty rad, except I'm kinda shallow and was therefore disappointed by no bandages.

but the Mummmies are OMF's close personal friends. I don't get it. Something Evil is afoot-foot.

Arj Barker, Brent Weinbach, Moshe Kasher and me, for Free, Punch Line, Monday at 8pm.

I know comedy isn't music or art or anything (sarcasm) but I think there will be free beer there while it lasts (no, for real, they're really desirous of a good enthusiastic audience as they're taping the show.)
