I'm a little disappd that the Calvin Johnson debate didn't keep raging on in the comments below. Or descriptions of my smell. Even the fact that Calvin Johnson is such a polarizing figure is pretty interesting. Isn't there some anecdote about him enraging Rollins sometime? Oh yeah, the internet has an answer for that, written by Lois Maffeo no less (fuck! I forgot about her. Butterfly Kiss was one of my favorite albums of the riot grrl era, and I am getting goosebumps listening to the song above). Here's what she wrote in The Stranger in 1999. Read the rest of the take down here, it's pretty crazy
About a million years ago, Black Flag played at the Tropicana in Olympia. Beat Happening opened. As Calvin Johnson pranced and tummy-hopped around, you could see Rollins behind the stage looking increasingly incredulous. Was Johnson mocking Rollins' macho stage presence by offering the exact opposite? Was Rollins being upstaged? His gall visibly rising, Rollins planted himself in the front row, directly in front of Calvin, and began taunting the singer. Johnson, who never backed down from a heckler in his life, ignored the braying of insults and soldiered on. Finally, in exasperation, Rollins reached up and placed his hand over Johnson's crotch. Johnson merely took a step back, looked Rollins in the eye, and said, "Didn't your mother teach you any manners?" Apparently not.
Spent some quality time on the Bows patio yesterday. I don't usually like fruit salsa but I should have known that Jaymes would make a good version of it. I forced the server to let me take a picture. Then we quaffed this golden beauty. Delicious. A strange guy made me autograph a MidMo (he did not know who I was, he just eavesdropped on us talking about MidMo) and I fell for it and now I think it was some kind of identity theft scam or something. What do I do?
More refreshing beverages. This is the blueberry ginger kombucha from Sugar Plum Vegan. This might be my summer jam.

Man my boob is a real striped flag back there.
The lemonade at sugarplum vegan was also delicious.
I was a big lois fan too. I mean not like I was a Mary Lou Lord fan but a fan nonetheless. Man the 90's did have a lot of ladies huh? Almost like a movement or something?

I guess I must have had Butterfly Kiss on cassette. Luckily K still has it on LP. Scott, you don't have it do you?

Receipt for Your Payment to Calvin Johnson
I think a mongoloid hacked your account.

Did you go to the Great Clips on Freeport? I always have good luck at that one and my hair is pretty hard to cut since it's so straight.

Identity theft - keep tabs on your credit report, you can check via Experian et cetera. It's free for one annual report or you can sign up for the short term where you'll get notices if anything changes (people pulling your profile or accounts added) on your score.
RE: Beat Happening. It's amazing to compare Calvin with another act I used to see coming through town back in the day, The Flaming Lips. Time has definitely been much kinder to Wayne Coyne in terms of looks and creative output. And The Fearless Freaks was genuinely more touching and inspiring to me versus anything about Olympia in terms of making art/culture in your community.
Bangs - if somebody cuts your hair, usually they'll be good (at least my hair dresser is) about offering touch-ups for bangs or the back of the neck. Or ask the Katymoster, I seem to recall her cutting other friend's hair.
I'll do it for $20.

I think Hey Antoinette was one of my all time favs. Now I think I have to go home and dig through my 7"'s.
jamattack!
ps. I'll cut your bangs for $19.50
there's a great book out called "girls to the front" by Sarah Marcus about Riot Grrl in the 90's -- she really gets the story right (for a change) -- very personal, awesome book. The musical stuff is primarily Bikini Kill/Bratmobile/HeavenstoBetsy/Huggy Bear, but the focus is not so much on the music as the individuals who were drawn to riot grrl as young women and the effect it had on their lives. Very honest, inspiring, and somewhat painful book to read -- as it should be. It's available at the library.
i wanted the calvin johnson debate to continue longer, as well. I'd rather see him with Paul Collins than Rollins --- even though a "Rollins + Collins Night (With Mucky the Ducky opening) would work better in one of those catchy youtube ads.
speaking of Black Flag --- there's talk of Black Fag coming to town...
I have got to get my hands on that kombucha!
