I have three things in the SNR this week. Am I insane? I'm headed that way. King Tuff interview! This is my first thing to get reprinted: it's also in the Chico News and Review for which I received a sweet, sweet payment of 25 bucks. My real reward is if he sells a few more tickets in either place. That guy should be rich as far as I'm concerned.
Other thing, a short piece on the Slant Step show at the Nelson. I am unhappy with the truncation of my article, which my editor will probably be annoyed I am writing. That's the way the cookie crumbles, I know. And I accidentally turned it in at least 125 words too long. Here's the original ending. Read it after the piece, if you care to.
The opening was kicked off by a panel discussion which
included conceptual artist Stephen Kaltenbach and Verge Executive Director Liv
Moe, among others. The moderator asked the panelists what they thought the
original purpose of the object might have been and Moe punctured the playful
mood somewhat with her prosaic, yet suddenly obvious answer: “I think it’s a
shoeshine stool.”
And the third is my second food review. I am still way to nervous about those things to link to it. I try not to think about it, even though I stand by what I write. I am the most happy about the review I'm about to turn in as soon as you pick my joke. It will run in a few weeks.

I voted for the Gauguin one and it didn't count my vote. Fix!

I voted for "since Daphne & Celeste went to Japan"

I'm super-stoked that you reviewed Tacos & Beer. That place deserves the attention, as do those enchilada en estilo de Apatzingán. The first time I went there, I saw a lady carrying that platter out with a chicken leg on top, and I scrapped my order and said "Oooh, gimme that!" Now I gotta try that morisqueta, too.
That style of enchiladas are also available at El Palmar in Carmichael-adjacent. Apatzingán is also repped in the name of the new-ish Taqueria Mi Lindo Apatzingán in Rio Linda (at the site of the former Lalo's #1) and an awesome truck that parks during lunchtime in front of the ultra-jank M C Discount Liquor & Mini-Mart on 47th Ave near the corner with 47th Street. No enchiladas on the truck, but some of the very best tacos you will eat anywhere (esp. if you get the adobada).
I'm also stoked to see the Habit Burger Grill finally disappear from those weekly-reoccurring small-print mini-reviews. That place never warranted half as many stars as it got.
We still gotta get this giant Ocean King family meal spread for 8+ people. Meat eaters only!
we will do that for sure. it would be fun to do it with a band, but is there any band in the world with all meat eaters?
i plan to cover that apatzingan taco truck in a taco truck roundup thing
i read that about el palmar (which I want to go to) but then when I looked at the menu on line I did not see the enchiladas. have you been recently?
dude, get the morisqueta. it's so fucking good.
Ah, Miller came up with the best one, a day late!

I missed the LCD movie because I got the time wrong! Did anyone see it?
I know a waiter from El Palmar that I met at a party. His family's from there, and he said that the owners also trace their roots back there. The place is set up to appeal to suburban normals, so you might not know that they have more authentic regional specialties without the insider knowledge. Plenty of Chinese places hide the good stuff from non-Chinese people, but I've never heard of another Mexican restaurant doing something similar.
Who is the meat-eatingest band for the Ocean King challenge, I wonder? I know that 3/4 of Puffy Areolas killed that spicy pig ear and strawberry spareribs, but they don't figure to be back anytime too soon.
only 35 more minutes to vote!!!!!
It might be fun to take Haily and Mike C. to Ocean King. But I think the only meat Hailey eats is hot dogs?
If she can floss with an octopus, she's gotta be able to eat anything!
Uzi Rash springs to mind as a band that can probably eat mass quantities and wide varieties of meats. (They reportedly cooked and ate an octopus which had served as floss at a Hub show.)
Big trouble in little china wins by a landslide!
Hopefully my editor wasn't one of the "kill the joke" voters
Sucks they cut the ending, but 125 words is a lot of overage in a short piece. my rule in such cases: cut from the middle!
Also, pretty sure that the show was curated by Joy Bertinuson, not by Renny.

Big Trouble in Little China always wins!
Except, of course, at the box office.

Double edited!
Crap. I knew she was the moderator, and had her name in the last paragraph, but did not know she was the curator. I will email her.
For the record, Joy Bertinuson co-curated that show. So it was only half incorrect. Or kinda only incorrect by omission.
Ah, the catalog is incorrect then... she's listed as the curator there.
