stupid rich people

Can I rant for just a second here? So it looks like I'm not going out of town this weekend due to stupid mother nature. That means that there are a couple of events at Mondavi that I would love to attend coming up. One is a string quartet playing Mozart on sunday. Oh, but wait it's 36 dollars. If you're a student it's 18 but when I inquired around here about scamming that I learned you have to present your student I.D. at the door. On monday the Russian national orchestra is playing some interesting selections (not that I know jack shit about classical) but that particular event costs 49 fucking dollars for the cheapest seats. I know I shouldn't be surprised at these prices because classical music is for rich people after all, but I think that sucks!! I think that UCD staff should get a break on the prices, too. I wonder if every show sells out so that they know they can charge as much as they want? I bet the staff are just as poor as the spoiled little students.

And speaking of stupid rich people, Mayor Fargo is delivering her state of the city address to a bunch of 'em tonight.

Maybe I can make it to the Kabinet for the Jodorowsky double feature, but violence really isn't my thing. Sex, great, but extreme violence makes me queasy.

A lot of the people who usher concerts at Mondavi or Freeborn Hall are UCD employees because that's the most affordable way for them to see the shows instead of shelling out the money for overpriced tickets. The main draw back to that approach is the amount of time you have to commit to volunteering/training, not to mention having it sometimes feel like a second job, especially when you'd have to work at show after being at work all day.

As for rich people, well yeah definitely. When they had Los Lobos & Lila Downs play there and it was was supposed to be a tribute to the Central Valley's migrant farmworkers. Except that the management for the Mondavi Center told the performers and staff who were running the concert that there was to be absolutely no reference made to Cesar Chavez or the United Farm Workers because that would offend the center's main donors, the Mondavi family.

A friend of mine that knows more about classical than I do said that the Sac State orchestra is good, but I think they only give performances once a semester. That thing about the UFW is crazy! Shouldn't the mondavi's be subsidizing it with their buckets of money? Or did they just build the place and say "out". I know it must cost a shitload to ship the Russian musicians over here and keep them in vodka and caviar and nesting dolls while they're here, though. So I guess that justifies that price. But the string quartet is similar to one I saw a while ago, which is in a smaller room and they give a lecture in between the pieces. I think that one should be cheaper. It's only four guys!

the sac state music performances are really good. i've seen a lot of stuff for relatively cheap to free over there. i will also say i really liked the dance department's semester performance as well.
