Josh Reynolds is relating his story of going on a date for a NY Post feature in chapters. This will give you a clue how the date went-at one point he had to ask "what can I talk about that won't bore you?". Yikes.

Lyme Regis at Gilman was really good despite the signature muddy Gilman sound. Their songs are great. The single is supposed to be on sale at Beers now and I'm guessing they might have it at Time Tested. What shows do they have coming up? Anyone?

This weekend there are a couple of good shows but I will probably be out of town. Two Gallants are playing at Fools on friday. When they played at Puppet Towne I got there too late. Did anyone see them? The Feeling (now Coco Shwa????) are playing on saturday at the Fox and Goose. I always like shows at the Fox and Goose. It's warm in there and there's beer.

Do you want to hear a good new band? Do you have speakers on your computer? Go here and click on "you broke my heart". This band (Lavender Diamond) are playing the Arthurball, (in L.A) which has a good lineup. I wish I could go because I have this weird feeling I'm never going to get to see Joanna Newsom live again.

Oh yeah, and Christian K., what's up with clubber? Is the column just ending? Are you doing something new instead?

I see that Lyme Regis are playing with the Losin Streaks on the 28th at the Blue Lamp.

Yeah!!

It's a celebration! The Ol' Man's turnin' 64.................
I mean 40. The 28th is a combined birthday party between Matt K and Tim. Tim's turning 40, Matt's turning 24. It's the "When I'm 64 Show."

Now to find the perfect over the hill t-shirt.

i cant remember who's playing, but tomorrow night i read that theres a dolly parton tribute show at old ironsides. dolly is kind of my personal buddha, so im gonna go. anyone else find that interesting.

okay, i want to start a conversation about old restaurants that died. for one thing, im curious if aldos is stillin working order. i used to go and sing there with mario ( now deceased) who claimed he could play anything you asked but what that meant was puccini only. i remember they made their caesar salad at your table with raw eggs and had flaming crepe suzettes. where are the steak and crepe suzette, caesar salad and shrimp cocktail restaurants now? and anyone remember brothers deli at towne and country? it got ousted a really long time ago, but as of now theres only one place in sac that makes matzohball soup and a decent pastrami and its sams out on sunrise. a good kosher restaurant is sorely needed in sac, i know i dont live here but i see way too many asian bistro fusion blah blah blah restaurants out there lately opening up.they all seem to be part of some huge corporation who sits around thinking up restaurant ideas at board meetings based on theme and design. it makes me sad.
oh yeah, i forgot about the hot pastrami on aubburn havent been there in years. theres a killer pastrami.
maybe i should eat breakfast.

The Hot Pastrami closed down!! I only got to eat there once but when I went, the waitress said "have you been here before?" I said "no" & she said "OK, you're getting the hot pastrami sandwich". It was so fucking good!!

what does an "unpleasant lesbian" look like ?

The 524 has been closed for years after a minor fire. For a long time, they'd been saying renovation was right around the corner, but it has been, what? Five years? It is right around the corner from me. Kellogg moved right across the street from it about six years ago and only got to eat there once before the fire. It's too bad, because that entire building is falling apart and some jerk is bound to buy it and raze it and erect Mcbuildings in place of what could be a restored funky old place. I will now shut up.

524 is still alive and the food is exactly the same!!!!!! Just go to the one on Northgate. Same waitresses, same food, delicious. And slightly less dumpy. It sucks that it's not downtown but at least it's not gone. That would make me really sad.

I never got to eat at the Hot Pastrami.

What's up with Mr. Pickles opening everywhere? Is anyone into Mr. Pickles?

Clubber is over because I just don't want to do it anymore. Frankly I just can't take all the shit comments I get for it. It's just too much and it's ultimately taken all the fun out of writing about live music. My own music is moving up this year too (I have some touring to do and other stuff) so I need to focus on that and give my family some time in between.

In the end, if you're going to write honestly about music in this town or any other, you need a thick skin--much thicker than mine, I'm afraid.

I suppose I could have just written puff pieces for the past 3 years, but that just seems dishonest to me. So I wrote what I wrote. Some of it I felt was great, some just so-so. Occasionally something crappy slipped into print. On a weekly deadline it happens.

I'll still be writing for SN&R, but on a story-by-story basis, starting with something on George Parsons' DREAM magazine (which you should all be reading).

Best,

CK

Best of luck to you CK. It is a thankless job I think, no matter who you are.
I heard a rumor that Jackson Griffith, crown prince of the obscure reference would be coming back to do a Clubber type story. I've always enjoyed Jackson't writing.

Somebody please bring back a fancy "Continental" restuarant! If I'm going to spend a bunch on dinner, I want the option of having good ol' European hotel food of the Victorian era! And I agree, too many "chain" restaurants with no soul and no flavor. Enough already!

I bet there are good ones left in San Francisco. What are they? Anyone?

It sure would be nice to have one in Sac, downtown!

There was a famous restaurant in SF during the gold rush called "The Poodle Dog". I'm just throwing that out there, future restauranteurs. It's funny.

I read on, don't tell anyone, The Sac Rag that the original Mr Pickles is independently run but the rest are chains using the name.

And Dream magazine is great! It's rad that it's been going so long. And that guy was one of the only non-annoying people in the Jandek movie. His stories of his phone conversations with Jandek were great.

I struggled with word choice here I picked "unpleasant lesbian" mostly due to the fact that words sound funny together but in reality she just looks more like Broom Hilda in the picture. I'll see if I can scare it up.

Josh said...

Ok, on second thought I went ahead and changed it from "unpleasant lesbian" to something else.

i was talking to my family last night about steak restaurants ( brought up by the fact that they are going to ruth's chris steak house tonight) and hey were telling me about aj bumps in freeport which closed down ages ago, which i used to go to, where apparently they AGED THEIR STEAKS FOR SEVEN DAYS ON A ROTATING HANGER. and apparently you couldnt get a better steak. how cool is that?any other places that do that?
the best ribs i ever ate, besides my grandpa jims, were out in the desert in victorville at a place called the cocky bull. my boyfriend and i drove thirtymiles out of our way two nights in a row to eat there.
im going to let you all in no a hamburger secret. my dad makes these insanely good hamburgers by soaking hickory chips in water for a few hours, the longer the better, then pouring the water over the barbecue coals before smoking up. the result is amazing. i havent tried it yet but my french husband will one day be required to learn how to barbecue,i even wrote a prenup about it.

The MeagCools are also playing the Distillery this Saturday with the Black Jetts from Las Vegas and Electric TeenageBedroom.

Just an FYI.

Broom Hilda is a waaayyy funnier description, and more descriptive, too.

So omf's 40. I hope I look that good when I'm 40. And so slim! What's his secret?

For real, C.K., being a local music writer is thankless for sure. I wouldn't want to do it because there are only a few local bands that I enjoy watching. I wouldn't want to force myself to go see shows just to write about them. I'll look forward to your next article. Who's going to write about local shows now?

Speaking of shrimp cocktail.... who remembers Neptune's Table? Red velvet wall paper, rolled ham and cheese appetizers served on a toothpick over ice, and cheesy cocktails that had been out of style since my grandma was girl. Ah, RIP Neptune.

As for OMF I think his boyish good looks and trim figure are due in part to eating at Lil' Joes on a weekly sometimes daily basis for the past 20 years.

Wow. Dream magazine does look really cool. Is there a place to pick it up around here? Check out the website.

My first job was bussing tables at ye old Neptune's Table. The memories are coming back ... the bubbling lobster tank in the lobby, the keyboard player in the bar playing "Lady" while the locals got hammered, a waiter named Victor who had a thick neck that looked like a slab of Neptune's prime rib, the owner's son and his white disco loafers. That place was like a ring from Dante's "Inferno" mixed with a Vegas lounge.

Stan had his bachelor party (for his ill-fated marriage to peter benchley's the beast) at Neptune's Table. The highlight was he and Alex Shrugg karaoking a duet of 'Sugar Sugar'... NT wasn't as cool as the Coral Reef, but i was still sorry to see it go...

Ok, cool. Can't always get it right the first time.

Just head over to Tonevendor - they have all the back issues of Dream. Boy I sure don't know what I'd do if Tonevendor moved.

No one tell him that Tonevendor's gone, I'm worried he'll go insane. I've actually set up a small mock Tonevendor in my pantry (heh heh) and I tell him it just moved in there. I made Dan and Jay Howell puppets. Shh..don't tell.

i went to school with neptunes granddaughter. she always talked about how her grandpa owned neptunes table.wheni went to her house her mom had an eighties version of a beehive hairdo and the and a a hair helmet and she was in galena street east . the parents had nothing left to talk about. i wasnt surprised years later that they got divorced. rambling story. anyways, now neptunes table is called highlander sushi, which is the most impossiblly culturally mixed up name ever. i love it.

Hey, my first ever heckapost. Even grade school teachers eventually catch up to everything. Of course, my post DOES involve self-promotion. Yes, The Feeling are going all CocoSchwa on us this Saturday and (here's the part about me) Harvester and the Lookyloos are out of hiatus for this delicious pop fest. I'm bringing the guys down from Oregon for this rare Harvester dogpile. The Lookyloos don't have geography as an excuse, but come out and let them know you missed them. Hi Heckabeck!

Neptune's Table was located on South Land Park Dr., nestled in a strip mall that caters to the many spritely senior citizens' apartments nearby. There's also a post office in that strip mall, the original Giovanni's pizza location and Brownie's Lounge, which is known for its swill and corned beef & cabbage.

After Neptune's Table shut down, I think David SooHoo took over the place, tried to swank it up, and just called it "Neptune." The little old ladies who just wanted Tommy the waiter and some fucking prime rib were stunned. Neptune even tried to throw a club in there. When I popped in once, there were maybe 10 people and a very empty dance floor.

In its last incarnation it was the Highlander, which curiously served Scottish food and sushi. Haggis handroll, anyone?

Heya,

Turns out Coco Shwa will NOT be the new Feeling name. Suggestions heckasackers? Top on my list: Tunnels. Does that suck? Maybe. My sister suggested Bearhead - because she was looking at a bear head at the time I yold her that we no longer have a name again. We could all wear bear heads.

Also, I now have insurance. Anyone want to recommend a dentist?

I like doctor Wesley Fong. His office is at 2525 K Street on the first floor. He is really great and I don't recall any pain. even w/o the gas, 'caine or anything else. If you go there tell him I recommended him, so maybe he'll back off about my outstanding balance a little.
