mystery solved

I was perusing the Sacramento Union, and actually kind of enjoying it (is that a measure of how bad the Bee is?), and in an article about a local Olive Garden manager being sent to the Olive Garden insitute in Tuscany (yes, that is a real thing that really happens) was embedded this piece of information: the now defunct Jazzmen's Art of Pasta in Old Sac was so named because the owner had a granddaughter named Jazzmen! That makes it way less insane.

That K.J. feature was weak, if I may say so.

How was the food? What was the inside like? I never went in there.

I went on one of my first dates at Jazzmen's, this would have been like 1993, so I don't know if Woodhouse still worked there. I remember the food being regular mundane pasta dishes, but I was in high school so I wasn't really paying attention. This was the 2nd date, and our first date was at the Spaghetti Factory. He loved nasty pasta! Anyway, I remember that there was a fusion jazz band playing at Jazzmen's the night we were there, and it sort of made me feel sophisticated.

I don't know why the hell I ate there, but I did -- maybe it was when I was dating Woodhouse and I was waiting for him to get off work. All I remember about the dining was that it was 'al fresco' and total shit -- not Chooz a Pasta bad, just Johnny Carino's bad. It was right by that weird record store, right? The one where the dude yells, "Everything is 90% today!!!" but you still end up paying $6 for a Freddy Cannon 45.

Old Sac is so freaking weird. I try to get into it (that should be their motto: get into the Old Sac) but it's hard. Like I tried to write a review of fanny anns for midtown monthly, but it sucked too bad. I've never eaten at any Fats restaurant, and I don't really want to either.

Oh yeah, they had fuzak in the courtyard, I forgot! I have so many memories from there. The one dude didn't get a raise and pissed on the manager's door, that was awesome. The bar would cut me off after two (whole) pitchers of soda (why am I still alive?). The drummer from Sinz Of The Flesh was one of the managers. "Iron" Stew would make me the best ever not-on-the-menu dinner every night. I got my first raise, 15 cents (ow!!). There was this cool waiter dude who got me into both Miles Davis and Slayer (!). I can still bust out a decent lasagne in a pinch......

I'll have you know, Wizenheimer, that I actually bought my one and only Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon 45 at that odd junk shop/drug front The Alamo, now known as WHISKEY WILD!

Whauzerz says....

"The one dude didn't get a raise and pissed on the manager's door, that was awesome."

Hah-ha. I remember hearing about that but can't remember who.

Stew still pops over and whips up some crazy and excellent food.

The 4th & S crew needs to get back together and get in the kitchen so we can have off-menu items at low low prices.

Beckler, you've probably already seen this, but California Fats closed.
"Get into the Old Sac" makes me giggle.
