nashville, marrs, shows

I'm busy preparing for my trip to Nashville. Any advice on places to eat, stuff to do would be appreciated. I wonder if there's thrifting to be done? There's a thrift store called "Sanford and Son thrift". I was thinking of watching the show at the Grand Old Opry. Anyone been? Am I gonna be OK getting around without a car (not OK like safe, OK like is it fun to walk around?).

I will be pursuing a culinary tip about Azul in the MARRs building, and I was wondering, now that it's mostly done, what does everybody think about that development? Do you get anything good out of it? I never frequent it, but it seems ok.

After tomorrow I won't post for a week probably, but there are a TON of fun things coming up.

sunday, the 25th, the Parenthetical Girls and Deal Western are playing at the Firehouse in Davis. Parenthetical Girls is an intriguing and genderbending band. I don't know that their recorded output really does them justice. The singer is really charismatic and nice and funny, too. They are great, and I would totally go to this show, except I'm going to the Mantles, Vivian Girls show in Oakland instead. I hate having to choose!
Also coming up, the Fiery Furnaces are playing at Harlow's on may 28th. I'm beyond psyched to the max for this show. They are releasing an absurd live album at the end of the summer. It's three lps long! I would write downt the track list but it might crash blogger.
There are a lot of shows that next weekend (30th, 31st) but I guess I'm getting ahead of myself. Just be sure to mark your calendar for the So Cow/No Bunny/English Singles show on May 31st at the DAM haus. I love the DAM haus wiki entry! Maybe I will make some food for this show?!?!?

oh yeah, I forgot. The Sun City Girls thing is on tuesday, may 27th. Hot damn, it's a the horsecow. Clothing optional, obvs. I can't wait. Find a way to get there, it's gonna be cool!

I have also heard that Boxy is coming!

I went to a decent thrift store in nashville, but I was only there for like 3 hours. I suggest you rent a car and drive to Kentucky for some serious thrifting Cave City-style.

Azul has great, but pricey, margaritas. Tamarindo, Jaicama and lime. Fresh juices. OK salsas. Dec prices. Horrible decor and music.

Go to Pancake Pantry and get the french toast. We thought the hype about it being world famous was a little much going in, but it was MAD.

Clothing is optional here but if you don't want the village new ager to offer you a massage then please wear some clothes. Besides, he gets angry if you don't reciprocate.
I don't want to be tazering old hippies if things get out of hand.
Remember, a cold shoulder always works wonders or just say NO!

I think Marrs is great. It's one of the good examples of urban infill. It has a range of businesses, from the high to low end, something for everyone. It has a nice feel to it and is a good use of space. Before, that place was just a boring, ugly, empty chunk of office space and now it's totally bustling with all kinds of people. I'm just sad they took out the bronze goat, but I love the big insects on the side of the building and even the color changing lights.

I like the infill as well and I love the new Newsbeat, but you will be unsurprised to hear that I think it is shameful of the mayor and city council to increase the density of the corners of 20th and J and K and not make them any safer for pedestrians by putting in traffic lights.

20th by MARRS & 18th by 58 Degrees are both in need of some sort of increased traffic calming.

Has anyone else heard about the all-ages venue the kids are trying to start up in Marrs? Supposedly, it's actually going to happen in the next month. There will be a charge to get in, ala Fools, but I heard it will be very low (prob. less than $5). Fingers crossed!

I just called the cops.

man u kids are crazy. j/20 infill is crap, annoying as all fuck (esp if you have to kick it here everyday listening to eddie vedder and coldplay blast yr office window) luigi's is cardiac-bypass central (complete with nose-picking pizza makers--I've SEEN IT!). Peets, whatevz. parking and ticketing is a nightmare and as GBOMB put it: GET A FUCKING TRAFFIC LIGHT!

I've nearly been killed twice in the last month alone.

I hate it here. I'm moving to Del Paso Heights (no really, in a year. for real)

Sincerely,
FFT

PS: THe name of the all-ages venue will be called THE FUN GARDEN or thE GARDEN OF FUN or something like the place that used to be on STockton by the old Luigis

I haven't been to Nashville in ages, but I do remember as a youngster I got a real kick out of being able to drive around with a beer in my hand. I also was flabbergasted by the segregation still present.
Yeah, I know, not real helpful. Have fun.

I think the news and review interview with heather fargo has shown that the fungarden can host live music as long as the owner of the fox and goose intervenes on its behalf.

Those guys at Luigi's must have some delicious boogers, then, because I find it difficult to walk by the place without buying a slice. I do find the constant blatting of pop music outside to be pretty annoying, but then I'm the kind of person for whom life does not require a soundtrack. This is the first I have heard about an all-ages venue inside...if it's the case, then great!

I was kind of sad to lose Newsbeat downtown: apparently it was because they wanted the old Avid Reader space but a wine bar was planned for it...now the wine bar has bailed and both spots are vacant.

And yes, 20th and K needs a traffic light. Or an enhanced pedestrian crossing, like the one on Stockton by UCDMC, with flashing lights at the pedestrian level...but a traffic light would be ideal.

Just no more damn traffic circles.

Yeah I wish 20th Street was as cool and safe as Del Paso. That would be fucking awesome - you could like park anywhere you want and nobody picks their nose. They should rename the GARDEN OF FUN to the GARDEN OF SHIT because everything is crap and i hate it.

Have fun in Nashville! I'm so jealous, all my friends are going on trips lately, and I can barely pay my rent. Damn you guys with well-paying jobs!!!

I just bought my opry ticket. Exciting! Talk to you all when I get back!

I love the new Newsbeat. I think the Marrs building is a great infill job. You know what i think is funny? If it was a strip mall, it would suck. If it was a fast food building, it would suck.Ugly office building, suck. So someone tries to do something good and it still sucks. I think you (Anonymous) should develop something and see if you could do better. People like you bore the crap out of me...

You bore the crap out of me, but I still need to check in to see what the youth of today think. JoJo, you blow. Marrs needs more sushi and lofts, damn it! Why doesn't everyone understand?

Was in a thrift shop in Nashville with Dave Smith once and when he was trying on a cow patterned suit, Lux Interior and Poison Ivy from the Cramps walked in. They were nice and talked about their apartment in Boulevard Park (above the laundromat that used to be above 21st and H). A little while later, while eating pizza up the block, Steven Tyler strolls by. Barbara Mandrell's ye olde gift shoppe sold racist salt + pepper shakers and other racist knick knacks--these were new production, not items from the past. That was sometime back around 1991 though.

man, i didn't see any celebs when i was there. i had my fingers crossed for kenny chesney.

btw, i went to newsbeat for the first time the other night and the fact that it was open after seven did kinda make it feel like sacramento was a big (not world class!) city. i was stoked.
