another target, great

OK, stop thinking about Jonbenet Ramsey for a minute and think about this. This is infuriating. Why do we need another Target downtown? It's not even that far from the other Target. The Target on Riverside is not even that crowded all the time, why do we need another one? Riddle me that, Rob Fong.

I went to Pattaya Thai last night for the first time in at least a year and it did not disappoint. Me and Smiller got the meung kum salad, which is the one of toasted coconut, chopped ginger, onion, jalapeno and lemon served on a lettuce leaf which yummy sauce. Then we got a chicken green curry and a whole roasted fish with ground pork on the top. We fought over the fish carcass. Then we went to the Arbat European deli next door (why are Russian places always called "european" can someone answer this for me?) and got bear salami which I am pleased to report is smoky and delicious.

There are shows this weekend. MikeRMike is double-booked on saturday, playing with both Knock Knock at the fox and goose and the Bananas and Four Eyes at the Distillery. Oh yeah, and REO Speedwagon tomorrow at the fair.

I think the mall owners are trying to cater to the forthcoming Sac Towers residents. Putting a grocery store and a Target not 3 blocks away from all those fancy condos will bring those people to the mall area more often.

The existing Target on Broadway is in need of some help though. It's getting run down and dirty.

Fox & Goose has Knock Knock listed as playing this Saturday but I guess it's a mistake - at least according to Conwad.

Wasn't there a plan to update the Target on Riverside? And didn't that run into some NIMBYs/opposition? I wouldn't be surprised if Target closed that one in favor of downtown when, and if, it gets built.

Grocery store is a good idea though. Downtown's going to need at least one.

Grocery store definitely. I needed some emergency Boboli just the other night (TJ's dough let us down) & was bummed that it was closed down. Target - please. Not that Target doesn't have it's place but one downtown is enough.

I don't understand how TJ's dough could let you down.

you had to be there. let's just say sometimes it loses its stretch which will cause some people (me) to have a temper tantrum and toss it in the trash. there may have been some foot stomping involved. nevertheless, the tuna pizza emerged triumphant and better than ever.

In: Boboli
Out: TJs dough

I agree with Leon. Especially the corn meal kind TJ's has! So good...

The whole wheat TJ's dough is my latest jam.

Hint: get the roasted eggplant salad and hijack the eggplant and feta and pine nuts from it and put it on your pizza.

When I was down at the big mapping geekfest in San Diego I saw this awesome map about elderly Japanese and "food deserts." That is when pockets of elderly people can't get nutritious food easily by walking or with public transportation. I think that the closing of the downtown Albertson's has created a "food desert" for anyone with mobility issues in the northwestern part of downtown. It's a serious problem.

Oh yeah, Albertson's is the "it" I was referring to up there.

Even though Safeway isn't that far from my house, the trip up 19th from G to S on a bike sucks it. Crazy traffic, the endless closed sidewalk between K & L, and the lights are timed so you have to stop every damn block!

The dough lost it's stretch? Did you bring it to room temperature first? You do that and it's pretty stretchy. Just don't roll it out to larger than an LP.

my guess is that westfield agreed to and promised an anchor store. there was so much talk of a Walmart going in that location for a while.

we certainly don't *need* another Target, but i suppose i'd rather see it than a Walmart there.

I've occasionally gotten a tempermental dough ball that won't stretch. I try & take it out of the fridge for a while so it can warm up first though not for hours or anything. I still love it & I really want to try the cornmeal one. I've always made sure to have cornmeal on hand so I can mix it in with the olive oil on the foil that I cook the pizza on & that turns out great.

what kind of sauce does the tuna pizza have?

beckler said...

your favorite pizza sauce. the key is to use high quality tuna packed in oil from taylor's or cortis. other than that you can use basil, oregano, olives, peppers, whatever.

Yum, that sounds really good!

Now I'm wondering if the Knock Knock playing at Fox & Goose are the Portland A-holes that stole our name. It's one thing to take our name after we've had it for years, but how you gonna play in our own town with it?

Some fuggers in the Arcata Urban Relocation Center of Oregon stole your name? Sounds like time to litigate. Or just kick ass ...

Tj's has Tuna in olive oil too. It's the only kind I'll eat since Santa put it in my stocking.

Westfield wants to put Target in the mall because they assume that Sacramento is still a bunch of banjo-picking hicks. While I do have a certain fondness for Target (incidentally, the proposed change was getting rid of the garden center, a move vehemently opposed by residents who liked the garden center) I don't see much point for one in the downtown mall--personally I'd like to see something more along the lines of a Nieman-Marcus, even though I don't know why I'd ever shop at Nieman-Marcus. Between Macy's clearance racks and Joe Sun, my clothing needs are met, but I can imagine these theoretical tower inhabitants wanting something a tad higher-end than a Target nearby.

But yes, there is a big fat food hole downtown. I still like the idea of putting a Nugget or something in the Greyhound depot once Greyhound gets relocated to the Southern Pacific station. About the only place to buy food downtown (around K Street, etcetera) is in the various liquor stores or the Rite-Aid. A couple sell a few fresh things, but prices are high and selection is less than comprehensive.

Because Russia is a transcontinental country. There are two parts to Russia with 11 different timezones, European Russia left(west) of the Ural Mountains and to the right(east) is the Eurasian continent, In fact technically 40% of Europe is Russia since Russia spans something like 4,000,000 Km (My studies I remember, but I might be off by a 100,000Km or so on that.) Into Europe, hence the 40%. Since it extends so much into Europe and about 80% of Russian live in European Russia it says "European" on the stores in Sacramento.

The Arbat Deli was the Armenian store, since 1991 I believe. Then sold and resold a few times, until I bought it and threw everything out, remodeled it in 2005. In 2006 (I assume this was your visit) it was already Fine European Foods (a.k.a Kolobok) which was run by us Ukrainians, and Ukraine is entirely in Europe, hence the "European Store." The store is closed now.

I remember when I was in American high school, I was asked why I didn't have Asian eyes since I was from Ukraine. I was amazed. :)
