montreal recommendations

Soo...Taka's will take the place of Zen Toro. I'm bummed because I just recently discovered I like Zen Toro and now there will be one less good sushi restaurant. I hope something else good opens up where Taka's was. However, I am psyched on the Cafe Bernardo opening up where stupid Icon was. This might mean that Galleria Posada will be able to hang on, too, which is good for them.

I need help from the Heckasac readers. I have a vacation coming up in like a month where I'm spending 4 or 5 days in Montreal. Number one, I need to figure out where I want to stay. I guess I'll be in a B&B cuz it seems like Montreal has a bunch and that they're cheaper than hotels. I don't really want to be in the Latin Quarter. So, does anyone have a rec? And then any other recommendations for places to eat or stuff to do would be great.

I would say that this is bullshit but I already assumed that alcohol was illegal at the river. I thought drinking anywhere in public was illegal.

these are the places i was taken to by montreal jews:

cosmos for breakfast!!! the creation at cosmos is essential...they will ash their cigarettes in your food at cosmos, but it makes it taste better.

beauty's is another good spot for breakfast.

and montreal bagels are the best. fairmount or st. viateur. i don't think anything comes close. i've tried to order them over the phone from the bakeries, but it costs $65 just to ship them here.

i was on an airplane that showed a super long documentary about cosmo's once. like long to the point where i was like enough already, but yes, thanks for reminding me to go there. did you stay in any place you'd recommend?

p.s.-how was the bar?

I would like to second any conversation that has the word poutine in it. I hear there's a french fry place in old sac that serves gravy fries, but how, mon amis, can it compare?

Also, drinking at the river is only illegal in a few places where there was a problem at some point in the past, like a serious injury or death. Like paradise beach. But not at monkey island. I had this all explained to me once by a park ranger guy at paradise beach early in my sacramento life.

Besides, forget banning alcohol at the river, what they need to do is ban those mother fr***Ing substitutes for penises known as super soakers. Those are going to get someone killed. By me.

jana.

I had heard that the Galleria Posada was moving to Oak Park.

When i was kid--i spent a whole summer in Quebec with my grandparents.Montreal seemed rusty,Quebec City seemed like Europe(castle wall)and the farther we went into Quebec heading along St.Lawerence into the Gaspe-- cod was hanging out to dry and the smell of bread was everywhere.Further into the Gaspe--you see less Canadian Flags more Quebec Flags poled at houses--french nationalism was strong at this time(still is??).This was 77`(cause i saw a french R2-D2 at a movie theater) and alot of villages got electricity or a road in the early 70`s.My grandparents were frugal-- i lived on beans, french bread, lobster from boatmen. We also went clamming everyday and grandma would fry em` up..Beans,Bread and
Clams for like a whole summer..We rounded Gaspe saw the Pierre Rock..Went thru News Brunswick..I tottally would love to head back.So heckasac give a review of Quebec if u can..

beckler, Montreal is fabulous--I was there earlier this summer. I would highly recommend getting your hands on the Gourmet issue of March 2006, which is entirely about Montreal and has tons of restaurant recs, from cheap to very high-end. And, whatever you do, don't miss the Marche Jean-Talon. No hotel recs--I liked where I stayed a lot, the Hotel Square Phillips, but it was downtown and fairly pricey (chosen for family-friendliness, in that it had a suite and kitchen).

Drinking in the river is legal, drinking at the shore of the river or anywhere else with land under you and outdoors is illegal. If that makes any sense.

So if your at the beach, simply walk into the river before they see you and they cant bust you.
