the windy city is about to get windier

OK, I guess I still have a blog. The Bananas are playing in Chicago this weekend! Goooooo Bananas! Also, they are a sure thing to win that Sammie for best punk band, so make sure to place your bets now!

There are two shows coming up on sunday the 29th. I hate when there are two good shows at the same time! Especially because I haven't been to a show in weeks. Weak. The pizzas are playing at a salsa competition (the condiment, not the style of dance) in Davis on that day and the Finches are playing record club. I'll post all the relavent information at a later date. Later I might post a pizza recipe if you're really lucky.

Prediction: The Secretions will totally win that Sammie.

It's just that kind of negative thinking that's going to lead to the Secretions winning that Sammie.

for christ's sake would it be possible for the people on yelp to stop comparing Beer's book unfavorably to Powells!!!! Isn't Powells the biggest bookstore in the world?!!

Have you seen the latest documentary on Jim Jones? It's fascinating, but the end is not for the faint of heart.

Have you ever seen a grown man naked?

Correction: the Pizza's are playing after the Salsa-off. I can't fit any bands in my tiny-ass apartment. Exspecially since there are boxes everywhere because I'm moving soon.

oh yeah, and YAY BANANAS!

I saw the PBS American Experience on Jim Jones and I was TRIPPING OUT that they left so many facts out of it. It almost seemed like PBS had some sort of pro-Jim Jones agenda. Like "things weren't so bad and then out of the blue 900 people offed themselves". When I read about the gnarliness of Jonestown on wikipedia it made a lot more sense. Jackie Spiers was pretty awesome looking back then.

And Heather K.-thanks for the "facts" about the show but now that I have decreed it the Pizzas are playing in your room. Sorry.

Hmm...Wikipedia isn't exactly the best source of information either...

This is generally speaking.

Too bad about PBS getting the Jonestown story so wrong. Every book I've read on it has portrayed life there as super-crappy, so I don't know how PBS researchers could conclude that things weren't that bad prior to the koolaid.

Tidbit: Senator Jackie Speier has often cited her experience getting shot by Jones' gunmen when arguing gun issues. (She can be counted on to vote for stricter gun laws, natch.)

The CA Historical Society in SF supposedly has all of the People's Temple effects in their collections. It's there for historic research and also if the victim's families want access to it. One of the staff members at the Crocker used to work there and has some pretty trippy stories about Jim Jones robes and stuff being on display. Supposedly Jim Jones Jr comes in all the time to look at his dad's stuff.

Also, the first news reporter on the scene at Jonestown (and I can't remember his name, but he's a Sacramento native and started out as the first Hispanic reporter on KCRA) spoke to my Jr Statesman group back when I was in high school. Again, some pretty hair raising stuff. He said the worst part was seeing the families where the parents had kids lie down first and then lay on top of them. That plus just the smell of all those bodies left alone in such a humid climate for a couple of days.

One of my favorite books in my book collection is "If You Can Count To Four" by Rev. Jim Jones. It's about the power of positive thinking and how to realize your dreams, and reads very similarly to "The Secret" and other positive-thinking books. Funny how none of them cite Jones as an example of the power of positive thinking.

beckasac: are you going to the LJ Urban Blogger Dinner Thing on monday?

beckler said...

what's that?

wburg said...

LJ Urban is having a bunch of local people with weblogs (well, maybe 10-15) to eat food and talk about sustainable housing and some of the ideas they have in mind for future projects in West Sac and midtown. Jason mentioned that you were one of the people he wanted to have there but hadn't heard back from.

hey anonymous,

wikipedia is a good source of info, no matter what the right wing liberal press has been telling you. sure, the pop culture references get screwed with, but on scientific stuff it's pretty danged accurate. yup.

i am totally going to try to catch the bananas at liberia-fest, but dan deacon is playing in the slip and slide tent at the same time so i'm not sure i won't miss it. it's awesome, he's going to play his entire "spiderman of the rings" album-get this-IN ORDER!

hey look! i followed miller's good joke with a weak joke and it just sat here all day moldering away as the last comment. in my defense it was kind of an inside joke.

Perhaps the rest of the world has yet to discover your dislike of Dan Deacon & bands who play their records in order.

hey beckler, doesn't sound like you got my e-mail. maybe I'm getting filtered out. but you ARE invited to our Blogger Dinner (its tonight!).

We've got a couple of our projects in their creative, formative stage and thought it would be fun to chat with a group of urban-minded bloggers/thinkers about these projects and see what comes of it.

anyways, sorry 'bout the confusion (and the late notice)...if you're interested you can e-mail me at jason at ljurban dot com. if not, no worries and no offense.
