for sale

Finally, the Bee prints something interesting! I can't belive that N street house is finally up for sale. That must mean that the old lady died. I saw her watering her cactuses once. That is a pretty shady move by the new owner. I don't think he's going to get anywhere near his asking price. He was probably staking that house out for years and waiting to scoop it up. Of course, the article has the de rigeur idiotic comments. The Bee should either shut down their comments or make them approval only. It's really lame that people are writing hurtful and racist shit about people who have been murdered. People even found negative things to say after a story about a guy who got killed by a tree limb in Miller Park!

The N Street house is haunted. It was Old Man Miller's investigation to the Haunted Truck that which gave him open heart surgery and a mild stroke.

Of course, it was secretly haunted by Jon Stevenson in order to make money fast.

If it weren't for you meddling kids, Mister Stevenson would've gotten away with it.

i agree about the comments section in the bee. there are some seriously messed up things that get said in it. someone either needs to edit them for approval or they should take it down. the comments really do represent sacramento poorly.

Comments on news sites make me insane, since about 99.4 percent of them are useless, hear-me-ramble missives, and things get vitriolic very fast in an Angry White Male cap-lock fashion. It's bad enough that the reporters I know get to be frequently drowned in e-mails (some of which have very valuable leads and tips, but the balance are cheap shots, ill-informed drivel and the like, all of which a good reporter should at least take the time to politely repsond to), but now with a long thread of comments at the paper's site, the stories they've filed get dragged into the murky mire of (never your blog, of course, Beckler) the blithering, bloviating blogosphere.
In the, er, good ol' days this sort of discourse had a place where it belonged: In letters to the editor, read and screened and confirmed as real people by someone in the newsroom, and kept under a word limit and with every author getting one letter per month. A little "undemocratic?" Perhaps, but not the spectre of annoying, anonymous anarachy.

even gawker have approval only comments on their site (to make sure the comments are funny and not just OH YEh, well yore a fat bitch or something). why can't the bee do it? they should hire graswich back and make that his job.

the bee does review the comments. i've had several comments that did not come through. it seems they will publish any comment as long as it doesn't confront another commenter specifically. which does't work because it eliminates any discussion, and ensures that the majority of the comments are sent by those who don't read them anyway.

I could swear I've seen commenters attack, or at least respond to each other. It's even more fucked it they do have an approval process because that means they are allowing all that crap through.

Are you sure those comments are sincere? I smell poorly executed satire. Except for the 'rock a bye baby one' which is plain old fucked up, the other "angry" ones seem like bad sarcasm or pranks.

yeah, i noticed that in the one whose anonymous handle was sthprk. but either way it's irritating, and the ones that really got to me were the ones after the article about the sac state student killed by a stray bullet outside the library. a bunch of people were saying she shouldn't hand out in such a rough area (right by sac state) or that "nothing good happens after 1 am" so she was asking for it.

I don't think they monitor comments. Even when people are commenting on others comments in a backhanded manner which is all too often.. I watched the comments section very closely when it pertained to some stuff going on at my work. It was fascinating how lame the comments coming in were. After that I started following the comments section on other articles and found a very interesting thing: the same people appear to comment on everything (especially "NoNewArena").
It appears that they take the unpopular stance just to get a rise out of people. It really does portray a horrible stereotype of Sacramento considering the type of rhetoric that gets put on there. One more shooting being blamed on the person being African American and I am retiring the comments section! ~ R.M.

Regarding the N Street house: we lived next door to that place for a couple of years, and the previous owner (Gladys, I think ... it's been a while) was a little crazy but a complete sweetheart. She didn't like anyone messing around her house. I haven't seen her around town in a while so I wonder if she died. She never had any family who came around the place, so it would be really sad if she died and some anonymous relative cashed in. I'd rather think that she got the $800K and got herself a nice condo somewhere, because she was pretty awesome.
